Social inequalities in mental health: Exploring the mediating role of psychosocial resources in individuals with spinal cord injury.

OBJECTIVE: Lower mental health was observed in individuals with lower socioeconomic position (SES) in the general population. Similarly, social inequalities in mental health have also been observed in individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI), however, there is limited knowledge of the nonbiological mechanisms contributing to this uneven distribution. Previous research has demonstrated that psychosocial resources are linked to improved mental health. The aims of the present study were (a) to investigate the direct effects between SES and mental health load and (b) the mediating role of psychos

Academic learning problems and Rorschach indices: a Spanish replication.

This study compared the Rorschach responses of Spanish children who were and who were not judged by their teachers to be experiencing significant reading problems. With controls exacted on gender, social class, chronological age, and IQ, the responses of 15 pairs of subjects were examined; group differences in perceptual accuracy, self-concept, and reactivity were assessed. Consistent with American studies involving profiles of learning disabled and nonlearning disabled subjects, despite some differences being small, responses of children with reading problems were characterized by lower perce

Before, Behind and Beyond: Life Stories and Identity in Dementia Care.

Life stories are widely promoted in person-centred dementia care as tools to preserve the identity of the 'person behind the dementia'. However, as cognitive decline progresses, staff often face dilemmas when current expressions of preference appear to contradict a person's documented past, for example, a devout Muslim requesting pork or a lifelong teetotaller showing interest in alcohol. The aim of this study is to explore how dementia care staff reason about situations in which life story information conflicts with a person's present identity and expressed preferences. Using Atchley's contin

Semantic knowledge of words is necessary to produce an incidental self-reference effect.

Encoding information in relation to the self produces a memory advantage compared with other encoding methods. Termed the self-reference effect (SRE), this self-memory advantage has typically been demonstrated when people explicitly evaluate the self-relevancy of to-be-remembered target stimuli. Notably, recent works showed that simply indicating the location of target stimuli in relation to a self-relevant versus other-relevant cue (e.g., one's own or another person's name) under a non-evaluative, non-referential encoding context produces a self-memory advantage. What accounts for this incide

Sexual self-schemas across midlife: examining differences using computerized text analysis.

Given the biopsychosocial shifts that often accompany aging, it is reasonable to expect changes in one's view of themself as a sexual being (i.e., sexual schemas), which then has important implications for sexual and overall well-being. Participants (N = 206) wrote essays describing their sexual schemas, and responses were analyzed using computerized text analysis to identify seven central themes. Next, we conducted analyses to examine group differences in theme prominence by age group (ages 30-45, referred to as the early-midlife group, and the late-midlife group, 51-78), as well as the impac

A longitudinal daily diary study of stress, self-esteem fluctuation, and mood variability in adolescents.

Adolescence represents a developmental phase marked by profound and rapidly shifting emotional states. While some adolescents exhibit pronounced, day-to-day mood variability, others remain comparatively stable. Although emotional fluctuation has long been considered a core feature with implications for health and well-being, the determinants underlying these substantial individual differences remain insufficiently understood. To address this, we conducted a longitudinal study using daily app-based assessments, aiming to explore whether perceived stress and self-esteem dynamics help explain why

Metaphorical identity construction of depression sufferers on Chinese social media.

While prior research has documented various metaphors of depression, their role in identity construction in online communication remains underexplored, particularly in a Chinese cultural context. Drawing on a corpus-assisted analysis of Chinese Weibo posts, this study investigates how depression sufferers use metaphors of "depression" and "self" to construct identities. Metaphors were identified following the Metaphor Identification Procedure (MIP) and coded by two trained coders, with cross-checking and further discussion involving three native Chinese speakers. Results revealed that "depress

Social mindfulness is associated with reduced self-bias: A computational approach.

An established literature has demonstrated the benefits that personal possession exerts on decision-making. Compared to items owned by others, objects belonging to the self are identified more rapidly and accurately, a phenomenon termed self-prioritization. What is not yet understood, however, is the extent to which individual differences are linked to the emergence of these facilitatory effects. Addressing this issue, here we considered whether social mindfulness - a psychological construct that captures how attuned people are to others - influences self-prioritization. Using an object-classi

A Scoping Review of Self-Esteem in the Context of US Adolescents With Depressive Symptoms and Overweight and/or Obesity Status.

BACKGROUND: There is a gap in knowledge regarding self-esteem in US adolescents in the context of depressive symptoms and overweight and/or obesity status. Self-esteem can potentially play a role in the relationship between obesity and depressive symptoms, which are both increasing in prevalence in US adolescents. The aim of this scoping review was to understand the extent of evidence in relation to self-esteem in this context. METHODS: Using the Arksey and O'Malley framework, a total of 717 articles were identified from seven databases, 593 unique studies were screened after duplicates, 86 f

Sexual Self-Schemas and Lifetime Sexual Victimization: The Role of Sexual Identity Stigma.

Plurisexual women (i.e., women who are attracted to multiple genders) are at significantly higher risk for sexual victimization than monosexual women across the lifespan. Our study extends ecological models of sexual violence, minority stress theory, and traumagenic theory to this crucial high-risk population. Specifically, we test the hypothesis that a history of sexual abuse in childhood shapes women's schemas of their sexual selves as "immoral" and "irresponsible," which then increases vulnerability to sexual victimization in adulthood, particularly among individuals who experienced higher

Self-Perception of Reproductive Health, Mental Health, and Quality of Life in Females With Classical Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Classical Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (C-CAH) is a congenital disorder characterized by a loss of 21-hydroxylase enzymes. Consequently, androgen levels increase, resulting in varying degrees of psychological and physiological masculinization. This systematic review aims to examine existing research on females with C-CAH and identify challenges related to reproductive self-perception, mental health, and overall quality of life. METHODOLOGY: This systematic review was conducted based on the PRISMA 2020 guidelines, studies were retrieved from PubMed, EBSCO, Science Direct, and Pro

A Neural Signature of the Bias Toward Self-Focus.

People are remarkably self-focused, disproportionately choosing to think about themselves relative to other topics. Self-focus can be adaptive, helping individuals fulfill their needs. It can also be maladaptive, with self-focus a risk and maintenance factor for internalizing disorders like depression. Yet, the drive to focus on the self remains to be fully characterized. We discovered a brain pattern that when spontaneously brought online during a quick mental break predicts the desire to focus on oneself just a few seconds later. In Study 1 (19 female and 13 male human subjects), we identifi

Between being affected and being an active emotion 'manager': young women's accounts of social media use and wellbeing.

OBJECTIVE: A growing body of empirical research traces the impact of social media use on young women's psychological wellbeing. The aim of the present article is to explore young female users' affective relationship with social media platforms in the context of gendered, postfeminist self-making. DESIGN: Drawing on dialogical self-theory, this study analyses the interplay between different voices-of-the-self in participants' accounts of social media use. RESULTS: Participants construct social media use as a 'double-edged sword'. Being exposed to idealised content elicits self-othering, i.e.

What does qualitative evidence tell us about how having a diagnosis of type 1 diabetes mellitus impacts an individual's identity? A systematic review.

Despite literature acknowledging the significance of identity, thorough understanding of how Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM) impacts identity, and individuals' responses to this, is absent. This systematic literature review gathers, organises and evaluates existing qualitative studies investigating or reporting on how diagnosis of T1DM has impacted an individual's identity, and the ongoing impact that diagnosis of T1DM has on an individual's identity. Thematic synthesis of evidence from 13 studies produced four overarching themes: Social Identity; Loss of Self; Rejecting T1DM from Identity; an

Dreamers of the Day: An Exploration of Identity, Shame, and Maladaptive Daydreaming.

This study explores the relationship between maladaptive daydreaming (MD) and identity shame among individuals with MD. Participants described how MD originated or intensified during periods of distress related to aspects of their identity they felt shame toward, such as sexuality, culture, or disability. They constructed idealized versions of themselves in fantasies and imaginary communities, which provided them with belonging and acceptance. These fantasies seemed to allow participants to process shame without external support. The obsessive nature of MD narratives suggests participants were

Using Virtual Reality to Promote Self-Identity Reconstruction as the Main Focus of Therapy.

Based on the repertory grid technique, we developed Explore Your Meanings (EYME), a digital platform that helps patients explore identity values and internal conflicts using virtual reality (VR). EYME was part of a research project treating depression in young adults, including 10 weekly, 1-h sessions aimed at changing personal constructs-cognitive schemas that shape how individuals interpret reality. We present the case of Mary, a 21-year-old woman diagnosed with persistent major depressive disorder and social phobia. Early sessions with EYME revealed key implicit dilemmas in Mary's worldview

Spaghettification and the Conceptual Black Hole of Borderline Personality Disorder: A Qualitative Discussion Around Competing Meanings Given to the Diagnosis and Their Potential Consequences.

This paper explores competing meanings which may arise through receiving a diagnosis of "borderline personality disorder," discussing how this may impact a person's treatment and their sense of self. This paper is informed by qualitative case study research, which utilized interviews to explore experiences of crisis and crisis intervention for people diagnosed with borderline personality disorder, their family and friends, and professionals who work with them. Utilizing this qualitative research data, alongside wider literature, the conceptualization of "borderline personality disorder" and th
