This pilot study investigated whether goal-setting leads to good behavioral performance and high motivation during an unsupervised reaching task in patients with subacute stroke. Using a single-blind, stratified randomized controlled design, 50 patients with unilateral upper-extremity motor paralysis were allocated to either a goal-setting group (n = 25) or a control group (n = 25) without goal setting. Both groups performed an unsupervised reaching task during a 15-minute session. The primary outcome measures included the total time spent in training and the success rate of reaching tasks. Th

Structural analysis of social behavior (SASB) is a model that can be used to assess interpersonal and intrapsychic interactions in terms of three underlying dimensions: (a) focus (other, self, introject), (b) affiliation-hostility (love-hate), and (c) interdependence-independence (enmeshment-differentiation). Assessment of individuals or groups in terms of these dimensions can be made by self-ratings on the SASB Intrex questionnaires, ratings by others using the same questionnaires, or by objective observer ratings. Data generated by questionnaires or formal codes yield identical summary param

BACKGROUND: Mental disorders impact both individuals and health systems. Symptoms and syndromes often remain undetected and untreated, resulting in chronification. Besides limited health care resources, within-person barriers such as the lack of trust in professionals, the fear of stigmatization, or the desire to cope with problems without professional help contribute to the treatment gap. Self-guided mental health apps may support treatment seeking by reducing within-person barriers and facilitating mental health literacy. Digital mental health interventions may also improve mental health rel

Metacognitive Reflection and Insight Therapy (MERIT) is a significant development in psychotherapy for schizophrenia spectrum disorders, emphasizing meaning-making, self-understanding, and self-directed recovery. Grounded in the integrated model of metacognition, MERIT aims to help individuals form more complex and integrated understandings of themselves, others, and their community. Recent studies support its impact on metacognition, functioning, and recovery, though its flexible, process-based nature presents challenges for research standardization and widespread dissemination. This paper aimed to analyze the harms arising from gambling and gambling-related help-seeking behaviour within a large sample of Indigenous Australians. A self-selected sample of 1,259 Indigenous Australian adults completed a gambling survey at three Indigenous sports and cultural events, in several communities and online. Based on responses to the problem gambling severity index (PGSI), the proportions of the sample in the moderate risk and problem gambler groups were higher than those for the population of New South Wales. Many in our sample appeared to face higher risks with their gambling

BACKGROUND: As part of an international survey of mental health advocacy groups, information pertinent to patients' concerns regarding their diagnosis and treatment was gathered from South African members of a depression and anxiety support group (n = 404).
METHODS: Questionnaires developed by GAMIAN, an international consortium of advocacy groups, were mailed along with explanatory letters and self-addressed envelopes to South African members and members in nine other countries, for completion. Of 1,000 questionnaires mailed in South Africa, 40.4 % were returned.
RESULTS: The sample compris

Breast-feeding has long been accepted as the best way of feeding young children. Promotion of breast-feeding in hospitals has increased the proportion of women beginning to breast feed. The maintenance of lactation however needs other support, which can be provided by self help groups. "La Leche Liga"'s activity centers around this problem. Breastfeeding circles take place in Switzerland too and provide an opportunity for sharing experience and learning to solve everyday problems.

High dropout rates and poor levels of engagement are well documented for patients with eating disorders. Utilising motivational techniques and providing psycho-education have been suggested as ways to reduce treatment disengagement. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of a newly developed motivational and psycho-educational (MOPED) guided self-help intervention for people with eating disorders on engagement and retention in therapy. Patients who received MOPED pre-treatment (n = 79) were compared with a diagnosis-matched group of patients receiving treatment as usual (TAU; n = 79). The stu

BACKGROUND: Depression is a common mental health disorder with a wide treatment gap despite the availability of a number of effective treatment options. Blended interventions adopt a novel approach in combining internet-based self-help with brief face-to-face sessions thereby combining the advantages of both approaches and offering scope to address the treatment gap. The present study examined the effectiveness of a blended intervention combining the use of guided internet-based self-help with four to six face-to-face sessions in the treatment of mild to moderate depression.

BACKGROUND: Co-occurring depression frequently occurs in autism. Evidence-based psychological interventions have been successfully adapted to treat co-occurring anxiety, but there is little evidence about the usefulness of adapted cognitive-behavioural therapy for depression. To the authors' knowledge, to date there have been no randomised trials investigating the usefulness of low-intensity cognitive-behavioural therapy for depression in autism.
OBJECTIVES: The objectives of the study were to (1) develop a low-intensity psychological intervention for depression adapted for autism, (2) assess

Time spent in nature benefits human mental and physical well-being. However, much of the variance in outcomes of nature contact remains unexplained, suggesting that new mechanistic pathways need to be considered. Here, we tested a novel conceptual model linking nature contact with life satisfaction via pathways involving positive experiences of living in and experiencing the world through the physical self. Using data from the Body Image in Nature Survey (BINS; N = 50,363), representing respondents from 58 nations and speaking 36 different languages, we find that nature contact is associated w

BACKGROUND: Adverse childhood experiences (ACE) are linked to an increased risk of psychological disorders and lower psychosocial functioning throughout life. This study aims to evaluate the FACE self-help app, designed to promote resilience and well-being in emerging adults with a history of ACE. The app is based on cognitive-behavioural principles and consists of two thematic components: (1) self- and emotion regulation (SER) and (2) social skills and biases in social information processing (SSIP).
METHODS: The efficacy of the app will be tested through a single-centre, two-arm randomized c

BACKGROUND: Bulimia nervosa (BN), a mental disorder that causes significant impairment, can be treated with psychological, pharmacological, nutrition-based and self-help interventions. We conducted a pre-registered meta-analysis of randomized-controlled trials (RCTs) to assess the efficacy of these interventions in up to 19 different interventions.
METHODS: Database search terms were combined for BN and RCTs from database inception to March 2017. Abstinence from binge eating episodes, compensatory behaviors, the absence of a BN diagnosis and reduction of symptom severity were considered as pr

BACKGROUND: Phobic disorders are highly prevalent and constitute a considerable burden for patients and society. As patients wait for face-to-face psychotherapy for phobic disorders in outpatient clinics, this time can be used for guided self-help interventions. The aim of this study is to investigate a five week internet-based guided self-help programme of exposure therapy in terms of clinical effectiveness and impact on speed of recovery in psychiatric outpatients, as well as the cost-effectiveness of this pre-treatment waiting list intervention.
METHODS/DESIGN: A randomised controlled tria
