Behavioral treatment of night terrors in a child with acute leukemia.

A 3-year-old girl diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia presented with a 1-month history of recurrent nightmares. Symptoms of the disturbance conformed to a clinical picture of slow wave arousal night terrors, or pavor nocturnus. Behavioral treatment aimed at reducing anxiety related to maternal separation and medical procedures, and at reinforcing appropriate sleep patterns was effective in reducing and eventually eliminating the symptoms. Follow-up revealed no return of nightmares or existence of new problems. A brief review of descriptive, etiological and treatment aspects of night terr

Objective sleep parameters in children with nocturnal enuresis: a scoping review of polysomnographic evidence.

Nocturnal enuresis (NE) is a common condition in childhood, yet the role of sleep in its pathophysiology remains unclear. While failure to awaken during sleep is a key feature, objective evidence from polysomnography (PSG) has yielded inconsistent results. This scoping review aimed to systematically map studies reporting objective sleep parameters in children and adolescents with NE. The review followed the PRISMA-ScR guideline and was preregistered on the Open Science Framework. PubMed EMBASE, and Web of Science, were systematically searched for peer-reviewed English-language articles reporti

Sleep alterations in substance use disorders: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Sleep disturbances are common in individuals with substance use disorders (SUDs), often persisting beyond initial abstinence and hindering recovery. However, the underlying sleep abnormalities warrant further investigation, particularly given mixed findings regarding specific substances. METHODS: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to identify sleep-related abnormalities associated with alcohol (AUD), benzodiazepine (BUD), cannabis (CaUD), cocaine (CoUD), methamphetamine (MUD), nicotine (NUD), and opioid (OUD) use disorders. We systematically searched Embase, PsycINFO,

Quantitative changes in the sleep EEG at moderate altitude (1630 m and 2590 m).

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have observed an altitude-dependent increase in central apneas and a shift towards lighter sleep at altitudes >4000 m. Whether altitude-dependent changes in the sleep EEG are also prevalent at moderate altitudes of 1600 m and 2600 m remains largely unknown. Furthermore, the relationship between sleep EEG variables and central apneas and oxygen saturation are of great interest to understand the impact of hypoxia at moderate altitude on sleep. METHODS: Fourty-four healthy men (mean age 25.0 ± 5.5 years) underwent polysomnographic recordings during a baseline night a

Disruption of endocrine rhythms in sleeping sickness with preserved relationship between hormonal pulsatility and the REM-NREM sleep cycles.

In human African trypanosomiasis (sleeping sickness), sleep and wake episodes are sporadically distributed throughout the day and the night. To determine whether these sleep disturbances affect the 24-h hormone profiles and the normal relationships between hormone pulsatility and sleep stages, polygraphic sleep recordings and concomitant hormone profiles were obtained in 6 African patients with sleeping sickness and in 5 healthy African subjects selected from Abidjan on the Ivory Coast. Polysomnographic recordings were continuous, and blood was taken every 10 min throughout the 24-h period. Pl

Sleep Spindle Characteristics and Relationship with Memory Ability in Patients with Obstructive Sleep Apnea-Hypopnea Syndrome.

Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) causes intermittent hypoxia and sleep disruption in the brain, resulting in cognitive dysfunction, but its pathogenesis is unclear. The sleep spindle wave is a transient neural event involved in sleep memory consolidation and synaptic plasticity. This study aimed to investigate the characteristics of sleep spindle activity and its relationship with memory ability in patients with OSAS. A total of 119 patients, who were divided into the OSAS group (n = 59, AHI ≥ 15) and control group (n = 60, AHI < 15) according to the Apnea Hypopnea Index (AHI), were enr

Heart rate variability and salivary cortisol in very preterm children during school age.

The autonomic nervous system (ANS) plays a major role in the human stress response and reflects physical and psychological adaptability to a changing environment. Long-term exposure to early life stressors may alter the function of the ANS. The present study examines differences in the ANS between children born very preterm and full-term as well as the association between the ANS and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, the other main branch of the human stress system. Fifty-four healthy children born very preterm (<32nd gestational week) and 67 full-term children aged 7-12 years pro

Prenatal malnutrition and sleep states in adult rats: effects of restraint stress.

Independently, prenatal malnutrition and psychological/physical stress have been shown to affect sleep architecture in adult rats. As malnutrition and stress commonly co-exist in malnourished human populations, the objective of the present study was to ascertain the combined effects of these two insults by examining sleep-wake parameters following a brief restraint stress in prenatally protein malnourished rats. The male offspring of rats provided with a protein deficient diet (6% casein) for 5 weeks prior to mating and throughout pregnancy were implanted with recording electrodes beginning at

Hypocretin-2-saporin lesions of the lateral hypothalamus produce narcoleptic-like sleep behavior in the rat.

Hypocretins (Hcrts) are recently discovered peptides linked to the human sleep disorder narcolepsy. Humans with narcolepsy have decreased numbers of Hcrt neurons and Hcrt-null mice also have narcoleptic symptoms. Hcrt neurons are located only in the lateral hypothalamus (LH) but neither electrolytic nor pharmacological lesions of this or any other brain region have produced narcoleptic-like sleep, suggesting that specific neurons need to be destroyed. Hcrt neurons express the Hcrt receptor, and to facilitate lesioning these neurons, the endogenous ligand hypocretin-2/orexin B (Hcrt2) was conju

Increased dopaminergic transmission mediates the wake-promoting effects of CNS stimulants.

Amphetamine-like stimulants are commonly used to treat sleepiness in narcolepsy. These compounds have little effect on rapid eye movement (REM) sleep-related symptoms such as cataplexy, and antidepressants (monoamine uptake inhibitors) are usually required to treat these symptoms. Although amphetamine-like stimulants and antidepressants enhance monoaminergic transmission, these compounds are non-selective for each monoamine, and the exact mechanisms mediating how these compounds induce wakefulness and modulate REM sleep are not known. In order to evaluate the relative importance of dopaminergi

Differences in sleep EEG coherence and spindle metrics in toddlers with and without receptive/expressive language delay: a prospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: Changes in brain connectivity during development are thought to reflect organizational and maturational processes that correspond to skill acquisition in domains like motor, language, and cognition. This theory is supported by findings in typically developing children as well as observations of abnormal connectivity among children with neurodevelopmental differences. However, few coherence studies have capitalized on the potential of sleep electroencephalogram (EEG) to examine the developing brain, especially among very young children for whom formal neurodevelopmental diagnosis is

Dim light at night disrupts the sleep-wake cycle and exacerbates abnormal EEG activity in Cntnap2 knockout mice: implications for autism spectrum disorders.

BACKGROUND: Epilepsy is a common comorbidity in individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). Many patients with epilepsy as well as ASD experience disruptions in their sleep-wake cycle and daily fluctuations in symptom severity. Chronic exposure to light at nighttime can disrupt sleep and circadian rhythms. Contactin associated protein-like 2 knockout (Cntnap2 KO) mice, a model of ASD and epilepsy, exhibit sleep and circadian disturbances and abnormal events in the electroencephalogram (EEG). Here, we investigated how chronic dim light at night (DLaN) exposure affects sleep architecture,

Effects of nonsedating histamine H1-antagonists on EEG activity and behavior in the cat.

The central effects of the newly-developed antihistamines (H1-receptor antagonists) loratadine, astemizole, mequitazine and terfenadine were evaluated by studying brain electrical activity (EEG), sleep-waking patterns and behavior in the cat. The different stages of the sleep-waking cycle, i.e., wakefulness (W), spindle sleep (SS), slow wave sleep (SWS) and REM sleep (REM) were evaluated. The power spectrum analysis of the EEG was obtained by a computerized technique. For comparison, the sedating agent diphenhydramine was examined. Given at 3 mg/kg orally, a dose slightly above that effective

Activity of the hypnotics, flunitrazepam and triazolam, in man.

1 Effects of flunitrazepam and triazolam (0.25 and 0.5 mg) on sleep and on performance were studied in six healthy adult males. Sleep was assessed by electroencephalography and analogue scales, and performance by a visuo-motor coordination task. 2 Over the same dose range triazolam had a more pronounced effect than flunitrazepam. Total sleep time was increased by 0.25 and 0.5 mg triazolam, and by 0.5 mg flunitrazepam. Both drugs decreased awake activity and drowsy sleep, though the effect of flunitrazepam was limited to the 0.5 mg dose and restricted to the first 6 h after sleep onset. There w
