Sleep complaints in panic disorder patients.

Patients with anxiety disorders often report difficulty sleeping. The present study assesses the prevalence of sleep complaints in panic disorder (PD) patients, compares them with sleep complaints in a normal population, and investigates the role of comorbid depression and nocturnal panic attacks in sleep complaints in the PD patients. Seventy PD patients and 70 healthy controls were asked about their subjective sleep characteristics by means of the Sleep-Wake Experience List, which assesses sleep/arousal complaints over a 24-hour period. Sixty-seven percent of the PD patients reported sleep c

Mapping global research trends of Tai Chi for sleep health: Scientometric insights and network-based perspectives.

BACKGROUND: Sleep disorders have become a widespread public health challenge closely linked to cognitive decline, immune dysfunction, and chronic diseases. While pharmacological and cognitive-behavioral therapies remain standard treatments, their limitations-such as dependency and relapse-necessitate effective, low-risk alternatives. Tai Chi, a traditional Chinese mind-body exercise emphasizing mindfulness, breathing, and gentle movement, has been increasingly recognized for its potential to enhance sleep quality. However, global research in this area remains scattered and lacks integrative sy

Sleep Pharmacology: Medications Affecting Sleep and Medications to Facilitate Sleep.

Both therapeutic and nontherapeutic medications have a profound influence on sleep architecture, a vital component of overall health. Optimizing patient outcomes requires a clear understanding of how commonly prescribed drug classes affect the quality, duration, and structure of sleep. Clinicians should carefully consider these pharmacologic effects when selecting or modifying treatment regimens, particularly in patients with comorbidities or underlying sleep disorders. The widespread use of herbal and over-the-counter preparations further underscores the importance of comprehensive medication

Influence of Regular Physical Activity on Sleep.

Good sleep and adequate physical activity are essential to health. Yet, large numbers of people are chronically deficient in sleep and physical activity. About 1 in 3 Americans get less than 7 h of sleep per night and only 1 of 4 adults regularly complete weekly physical activity in amounts recommended for good health. This chapter reviews research that has examined relationships between regular physical activity and sleep. The overall weight of evidence supports that regular physical activity is associated with better sleep quality among healthy adults, with epidemiological studies showing mo

Sleep in Alzheimer's disease: a systematic review and meta-analysis of polysomnographic findings.

Polysomnography (PSG) studies of sleep changes in Alzheimer's disease (AD) have reported but not fully established the relationship between sleep disturbances and AD. To better detail this relationship, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of reported PSG differences between AD patients and healthy controls. An electronic literature search was conducted in EMBASE, MEDLINE, All EBM databases, CINAHL, and PsycINFO inception to Mar 2021. Twenty-eight studies were identified for systematic review, 24 of which were used for meta-analysis. Meta-analyses revealed significant reductions

Sleep Quality Reports From Family Caregivers and Matched Non-caregiving Controls in a Population-Based Study.

The stress of family caregiving may affect many health-related variables, including sleep. We evaluated differences in self-reported sleep quality between incident caregivers and matched non-caregiving controls from a national population-based study. Caregivers and controls were identified in the Reasons for Geographic and Racial Differences in Stroke (REGARDS) study and matched on seven different demographic and health history factors. Caregivers reported significantly longer sleep onset latency than controls, before and after adjusting for covariates (ps < .05). No differences were found on

Sleep-dependent memory consolidation in patients with sleep disorders.

Sleep can improve the off-line memory consolidation of new items of declarative and non-declarative information in healthy subjects, whereas acute sleep loss, as well as sleep restriction and fragmentation, impair consolidation. This suggests that, by modifying the amount and/or architecture of sleep, chronic sleep disorders may also lead to a lower gain in off-line consolidation, which in turn may be responsible for the varying levels of impaired performance at memory tasks usually observed in sleep-disordered patients. The experimental studies conducted to date have shown specific impairment

Acute and persistent sex-dependent disruptions of sleep-wake architecture induced by fentanyl self-administration in mice.

Chronic opioid use is associated with profound sleep disturbances that may contribute to relapse in opioid use disorder (OUD). However, how opioid self-administration and abstinence alter sleep architecture in a sex-dependent manner remains poorly understood. Here, we examined the effects of volitional fentanyl intravenous self-administration (IVSA) on sleep-wake architecture in male and female mice across drug-taking and abstinence phases. Continuous home-cage monitoring revealed sex differences in baseline sleep, with females exhibiting increased wakefulness and reduced NREM sleep relative t

Examining bidirectional associations between sleep and behavior among children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

BACKGROUND: Children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have more sleep problems than their peers which contribute to behavioral and functional impairments. This study examines the bidirectional relationship between nightly sleep (i.e., total sleep time and sleep efficiency) and daily behavior of children with ADHD. METHOD: Forty-three children (ages 6-13 [mean = 9.05, 54% male, 77% medicated]) participated in a 2-week study during an ADHD Summer Treatment Program (STP). Sleep was measured with actigraphy. Behavior was assessed using STP clinical data and daily parent and co

Post-H1N1 Flu Vaccination Narcolepsy in Switzerland: A Retrospective Survey in the 30 Sleep-Certified Swiss Centers.

Narcolepsy-cataplexy is a sleep-wake disorder and suggested to be immune-mediated, involving genetic and environmental factors. The autoimmune process eventually leads to a loss of hypocretin neurons in the lateral hypothalamus. Epidemiological studies in several countries proved an increased incidence of narcolepsy after H1N1 flu vaccination and infection. This survey in 30 sleep centers in Switzerland led to the identification of 9 H1N1-vaccinated children and adults as newly diagnosed narcolepsy. Clinical features included the abrupt and severe onset of sleepiness, cataplexy and sleep fragm

[REM-sleep behavior disorder and sleepwalking in a patient with Parkinson's disease and essential tremor].

REM-sleep behavior disorder (RBD), a form of parasomnia, is characterized by motor and/or speech activity during sleep corresponding to the dream content. RBD is currently considered as a marker of onset of neurodegenerative diseases (sinucleinopathies) and as a most specific early symptom of Parkinson's disease (PD). The authors describe a clinical case of a patient with the combination of essential tremor, initial signs of PD and RBD. A polysomnographic study has confirmed clinical signs of RBD and determined the disturbances of sleep architecture: the increase in falling asleep, number of a

Sleep disorders in children with self-limited epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes: a cross-sectional controlled study.

BACKGROUND: Self-limited epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes (SeLECTS) is the most common focal epilepsy syndrome of childhood. Sleep disorders are common in affected children but often remain underevaluated. We aimed to assess sleep disorders in children with SeLECTS compared with healthy controls using multiple validated sleep scales. METHODS: This cross-sectional controlled study included 65 children aged 6-14 years with SeLECTS and 65 age- and sex-matched healthy controls. The Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ), the Sleep Disturbance Scale for Children (SDSC), the Pittsburgh Sle

Diagnosis of Obstructive Sleep Apnea during Wakefulness Using Upper Airway Negative Pressure and Machine Learning.

Background and Rational: Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a common disorder, affecting almost 10% of adults, but very underdiagnosed. This is largely due to limited access to overnight sleep testing using polysomnography (PSG). Our goal was to distinguish OSA from healthy individual using a simple maneuver during wakefulness in combination with machine learning methods. Methods: Participants have undergone an overnight PSG to determine their ground truth OSA severity. Separately, they were asked to breathe through a nasal mask or a mouth piece through which negative pressure (NP) was applied,

Orexin peptides prevent cataplexy and improve wakefulness in an orexin neuron-ablated model of narcolepsy in mice.

Narcolepsy-cataplexy is a neurological disorder associated with the inability to maintain wakefulness and abnormal intrusions of rapid eye movement sleep-related phenomena into wakefulness such as cataplexy. The vast majority of narcoleptic-cataplectic individuals have low or undetectable levels of orexin (hypocretin) neuropeptides in the cerebrospinal fluid, likely due to specific loss of the hypothalamic orexin-producing neurons. Currently available treatments for narcolepsy are only palliative, symptom-oriented pharmacotherapies. Here, we demonstrate rescue of the narcolepsy-cataplexy pheno
