Factors associated with loneliness and social capital in a large volunteer sample of adults in England.

BACKGROUND: Loneliness is a pressing public health concern with wide-ranging impacts on mental, physical and social wellbeing. Building on the Measuring Loneliness in England (INTERACT) Study which represents one of the largest volunteer-based studies of loneliness and social disconnection conducted in the United Kingdom (UK), we explore demographic, social and health-related factors associated with loneliness and social capital, using multiple validated measures. METHODS: We analysed cross-sectional data from 135,725 community-dwelling adults across England. Loneliness was assessed using bot

The Effects of Cannabidiol and δ-9-Tetrahydrocannabinol in Social Cognition: A Naturalistic Controlled Study.

Background: Social cognition abilities such as empathy and the Theory of Mind (ToM) have been shown to be impaired in neuropsychiatric conditions such as psychotic, autistic, and bipolar disorders. The endocannabinoid system (ECS) seems to play a role in social behavior and emotional processing while it also seems to play a role in those neuropsychiatric conditions showing social cognition impairments. Main plant cannabinoids delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) modulate the ECS and, due to their opposite effects, have been proposed as both cause and treatment for neuropsyc

Attention guidance augmentation of virtual reality exposure therapy for social anxiety disorder: a pilot randomized controlled trial.

Biased attention to social threats has been implicated in social anxiety disorder. Modifying visual attention during exposure therapy offers a direct test of this mechanism. We developed and tested a brief virtual reality exposure therapy (VRET) protocol using 360°-video and eye tracking. Participants (N = 21) were randomized to either standard VRET or VRET + attention guidance training (AGT). Multilevel Bayesian models were used to test (1) whether there was an effect of condition over time and (2) whether post-treatment changes in gaze patterns mediated the effect of condition at follow-up.

Two sides on the fibromyalgia coin: physical pain and social pain (invalidation).

Although fibromyalgia (FM) has been traditionally defined by the extent of physical pain sites alongside other non-pain symptoms, recent evidence has highlighted the importance of social dimension in definition of pain perception. Social pain or invalidation, which denotes painful feeling following social conflicts or misunderstanding about illness legitimacy, is an important but ignored issue in the FM lexicon. While physical and social pain seem to be different and separate entities, we hypothesize that they are completely intertwined with indistinct borders in FM. Accumulating emergent neur

Resilience as social practice: Negotiating long COVID at the intersection of illness and ageing.

Resilience is often framed within neoliberal health discourses as an individual capacity for adaptation, obscuring how the ability to endure … ng recognition in healthcare and social relationships. These efforts were enabled or constrained by social conditions, including institutional acknowledgement, material resources and normative expectations of ageing, sometimes leading resilience to be performed rather than authentically experienced. A central finding is that resilience involved learning to live wit …

Lack of association between loneliness, social isolation and inflammation in people living with HIV aged ≥50 years: Results from the sub-study "No One Alone-Gesida Study".

Inflammation is linked to multiple health conditions. Emerging evidence suggest it may play a role in the association between social isolation - loneliness and health outcomes. People living with HIV (PLWH) exhibit chronic inflammation even with viral suppression, likely due to ongoing immune activation. However, few studies have explored inflammatory biomarker in PLWH experiencing loneliness or social isolation. This study aimed to assess this association in PLWH aged 50 or older.

Who is at Risk? Social Support, Relationship Dissolution, and Illness in a Rural Context.

This study focuses on a cohort of adults (40-plus) in rural South Africa to unpack associations between physical health and receipt of social support, and the extent to which these associations were moderated by marital status. We use logistic regression to estimate the odds of having received emotional, physical, or financial support separately for men (N = 2247) and women (N = 2609). Our results suggest having an Activity of Daily Living (ADL) limitation or having at least one chronic condition was not significantly associated with social support receipt for women, but having an ADL limitati

Effect of affect on social cost bias in social anxiety disorder.

The cognitive model of social anxiety disorder (SAD) assumes that cognitive biases are important maintaining factors of the disorder. Research and theory have highlighted the impact of cognitive self-regulatory processes on affect, but have not sufficiently focused on the influence of affect on self-regulatory cognitions. The present study examined the influence of affect on cognitive self-regulatory mechanisms in SAD by focusing on one critical cognitive bias, estimated social cost. Individuals with SAD (N=48) and non-anxious controls (N=48) were randomly assigned to one of three experimental

The effects of impression management demands on heart rate, self-reported social anxiety, and social competence in undergraduate males.

The effects of self-presentation demands were evaluated through conversational probe (CP) role-play tasks. Participants (N = 29) were required to manage their self-presentations (i.e., the impression they made, in each of two conditions). During high impression management (IM) demand, participants were evaluated on their performance. During Low IM demand, participants evaluated a confederate's performance. The High IM demand condition produced significantly higher heart rate (HR) and self-reported anxiety. HR and self-reported anxiety accounted for a significant amount of the variance in crite

Case-Control Study of Risk Factors for Meningococcal Disease in Chile.

An outbreak of meningococcal disease with a case-fatality rate of 30% and caused by predominantly serogroup W of Neisseria meningitidis began in Chile in 2012. This outbreak required a case-control study to assess determinants and risk factors for infection. We identified confirmed cases during January 2012-March 2013 and selected controls by random sampling of the population, matched for age and sex, resulting in 135 case-patients and 618 controls. Sociodemographic variables, habits, and previous illnesses were studied. Analyses yielded adjusted odds ratios as estimators of the probability of

Syphilis in Slovenia--on the threshold of the European Union.

The epidemiological situation of early syphilis (ES) in Slovenia is the subject matter of this report. After almost 25 years of decrease in Slovenia, ES is increasing again. The incidence of ES increased from 0.10 per 100,000 inhabitants in 1992 and 1993 to 1.82 in 1994 and 1.90 in 1995. In the years 1996-1998 there was a slight decrease at 1.25-1.45. The higher incidence of infections with ES is presumably the consequence of changed social conditions in the states of the former Eastern bloc and Yugoslavia, and of changing living conditions, and illegal prostitution in Slovenia. AIDS and HIV i…

Exploring the different models of the four-day workweek as social innovations in Germany's healthcare system.

BACKGROUND: The German healthcare system faces a persistent shortage of skilled professionals, particularly in nursing, driven by demographic change, high workloads, and challenging working conditions. In response, new working-time models such as the four-day workweek have emerged as potential solutions to improve job attractiveness, employee well-being, and staff retention. This study examines different models of the four-day workweek as social innovations within the healthcare system, focusing on their development, implementation, and implications across institutional levels. METHODS: A qua

Mass anti-malarial administration in western Cambodia: a qualitative study of factors affecting coverage.

BACKGROUND: Mass anti-malarial administration has been proposed as a key component of the Plasmodium falciparum malaria elimination strategy in the Greater Mekong sub-Region. Its effectiveness depends on high levels of coverage in the target population. This article explores the factors that influenced mass anti-malarial administration coverage within a clinical trial in Battambang Province, western Cambodia. METHODS: Qualitative data were collected through semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions with villagers, in-depth interviews with study staff, trial drop-outs and refusers

Health conditions of prisoners in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

We present the results of a quantitative and qualitative study on the living conditions and health of prisoners in the state of Rio de Janeiro. The goal was to produce strategic information to support the action of public officials who work in prisons. The results show that prisoners are young (average age: 30 years), poor, mostly black and brown (70.5%), have little education (only 1.5% of them have a higher education), and have been in prison for less than four years. Among the problems that indirectly affect their health, we emphasize: overcrowding (1.39 prisoners per one vacancy), idleness

Global occurrence of anti-infectives in contaminated surface waters: Impact of income inequality between countries.

The presence anti-infectives in environmental waters is of interest because of their potential role in the dissemination of anti-infective resistance in bacteria and other harmful effects on non-target species such as algae and shellfish. Since no information on global trends regarding the contamination caused by these bioactive substances is yet available, we decided to investigate the impact of income inequality between countries on the occurrence of anti-infectives in surface waters. In order to perform such study, we gathered concentration values reported in the peer-reviewed literature be

Constructing prevention: Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and the problem of disability models.

Both the medical model and the social model of disability have substantial drawbacks for the project of creating better lives for people with disabilities; the first denies the value of difference and the effects of discrimination, and the second denies any place for prevention and cure. Using fictional and non-fictional parental narratives of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, this article argues that a third model--a morphological model of disability--can best help us think about respectfully and effectively intervening in disability.
