E-Textiles for Healthy Ageing.

The ageing population has grown quickly in the last half century with increased longevity and declining birth rate. This presents challenges to health services and the wider society. This review paper considers different aspects (e.g., physical, mental, and social well-being) of healthy ageing and how health devices can help people to monitor health conditions, treat diseases and promote social interactions. Existing technologies for addressing non-physical (e.g., Alzheimer's, loneliness) and physical (e.g., stroke, bedsores, and fall) related challenges are presented together with the drivers

Enhancing community based health programs in Iran: a multi-objective location-allocation model.

Community Based Organizations (CBOs) are important health system stakeholders with the mission of addressing the social and economic needs of individuals and groups in a defined geographic area, usually no larger than a county. The access and success efforts of CBOs vary, depending on the integration between health care providers and CBOs but also in relation to the community participation level. To achieve widespread results, it is important to carefully design an efficient network which can serve as a bridge between the community and the health care system. This study addresses this challeng

Platformed care, platformed harm: how social media function as conditional informal infrastructure across eating disorder trajectories among young people in China.

Eating disorders (EDs) among young people in China are rising amid service barriers and stigma, prompting many to rely on social media for interpretation, support, and coping. While existing research often treats social media's influence as static "mixed effects", we reconceptualize social media as conditional informal infrastructure and explore how this infrastructure interacts with users' offline structural scaffolding to shape divergent illness trajectories. We conducted qualitative interviews with 21 young people with EDs, including 5 "dual-role" peer supporters, focusing on their experien

Piloting a minimum data set for older people living in care homes in England: a developmental study.

BACKGROUND: We developed a prototype minimum data set (MDS) for English care homes, assessing feasibility of extracting data directly from digital care records (DCRs) with linkage to health and social care data. METHODS: Through stakeholder development workshops, literature reviews, surveys and public consultation, we developed an aspirational MDS. We identified ways to extract this from existing sources, including DCRs and routine health and social care datasets. To address gaps, we added validated measures of delirium, cognitive impairment, functional independence and quality of life to DCR

Screens and brains: multimodal neuroimaging insights into mechanisms of problematic smartphone use.

BACKGROUND: Problematic smartphone use (PSU) is increasingly regarded as a form of behavioral addiction, marked by compulsive engagement and diminished self-regulation. An expanding body of evidence points to distinct neural correlates of PSU, including heightened sensitivity to smartphone-related cues, aberrant reward processing, and executive dysfunction. OBJECTIVES: This systematic review synthesizes contemporary evidence from multimodal neuroimaging studies that seek to elucidate the neurobiological substrates of PSU. To unify and contextualize these findings, a social-cognitive framework

Orofacial pain/headache interlaced to insomnia, sleep apnea and periodic limb movement during sleep/restless leg syndrome: a critical and comprehensive review with insights into social determinants.

This critical review explores the intricate interaction between orofacial pain and headache disorders and three prevalent sleep disorders: insomnia, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and periodic limb movements (PLMs) during sleep, while integrating the role of social determinants of health. Orofacial pain conditions, including temporomandibular disorders (TMD), headache, and burning mouth syndrome, frequently co-occur with sleep disturbances, creating a bidirectional cycle where poor sleep exacerbates pain and vice versa. The mechanisms underlying this relationship involve disrupted restorative s

Policies for recovery from drug use: Differences between public stigma and perceived stigma and associated factors.

INTRODUCTION: Public stigma towards people who use drugs is widespread and places obstacles in way of their recovery. Previous studies have used different approaches to measure public stigma, resulting in a notable gap in the understanding of the relationship between it and its associated factors. Some studies measure public stigma by assessing stigma perceived by those who use drugs, while others investigate attitudes towards them among the general public. This study aimed to compare perceived and public stigma, and factors related to these two variables. METHODS: The study comprised a cross

A Novel Mouse Home Cage Lickometer System Reveals Sex- and Housing-Based Influences on Alcohol Drinking.

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a significant global health issue. Despite historically higher rates among men, AUD prevalence and negative alcohol-related outcomes in women are rising. Loneliness in humans has been associated with increased alcohol use, and traditional rodent drinking models involve single housing, presenting challenges for studying social enrichment. We developed LIQ PARTI (Lick Instance Quantifier with Poly-Animal RFID Tracking Integration), an open-source tool to examine home cage continuous access two-bottle choice drinking behavior in a group-housed setting, investigating

Sexual diversity, social inclusion and HIV/AIDS.

Despite a number of programmes to prevent HIV among men who have sex with men (MSM) and, more generally, sexually diverse populations, gay and other homosexually active men continue to be at heightened risk of HIV and its consequences. This paper analyses some of the reasons for this situation and offers policy and programmatic recommendations to contribute to a solution. The social exclusion of MSM and transgender individuals is an overwhelming reality in the majority of countries worldwide. Although progress has been achieved in some countries, in most of the world the situation remains prob

The interplay of psychological distress, stigma, and social support in determining quality of life among Vietnamese people living with HIV.

INTRODUCTION: This study explores the intersection of psychological distress, stigma, and social support among Vietnamese people living with HIV (PLWH), focusing on their impact on quality of life (QoL). While antiretroviral therapy (ART) enhances survival, stigma and mental health issues persist, undermining QoL. Addressing these gaps in Vietnam is critical for improving comprehensive HIV care. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was employed at Thu Duc City Hospital from March to May 2024, involving 369 PLWH receiving ART. Data collection utilized validated tools to assess anxiety symptoms (GA

Stress Sensitization of Neurons in the Dentate Gyrus Is Dependent on Neuronal Interleukin-1 Receptor Signaling and Is Associated with Increased Synaptic Plasticity, Perineuronal Nets, and Excitatory/Inhibitory Input Imbalance.

Repeated social defeat (RSD) in mice causes sensitization of hippocampal neurons associated with enhanced contextual fear memory. Because enhanced fear memory is an integral component of posttraumatic stress disorder, the physiological basis of neuronal sensitization in the hippocampus after social defeat was investigated in male mice using two interventions: microglia depletion (CSF1R antagonist, PLX5622) and neuronal (Vglut2+) IL-1R1-/- mice. Here, two single-nuclei (sn) RNAseq data sets using these interventions were integrated and compared. Social defeat altered the transcriptional profile

Correlated signatures of social behavior in cerebellum and anterior cingulate cortex.

The cerebellum has been implicated in the regulation of social behavior. Its influence is thought to arise from communication, via the thalamus, to forebrain regions integral in the expression of social interactions, including the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC). However, the signals encoded or the nature of the communication between the cerebellum and these brain regions is poorly understood. Here, we describe an approach that overcomes technical challenges in exploring the coordination of distant brain regions at high temporal and spatial resolution during social behavior. We developed the E

Life is a highway: Driver's license acquisition and social determinants for youth in foster care and their non-foster care peers.

BACKGROUND: Data regarding the connection between driver licensure and social determinants for youth could provide insight into the impact of driver license acquisition. These relationships are important for youth overall and particularly for foster youth given that adolescents in foster care obtain driver's licenses less often than their non-foster care peers. This integrative review explores the association between driver licensure and social determinants. METHODS: Whittemore and Knafl guidelines were used to conduct the integrative review. The articles were identified in collaboration with

A Closer Examination of the Integrity Scale's Construct Validity.

People's commitment to moral principles affects how they self-regulate and directs people down different ethical paths. The Integrity Scale was designed to assess the strength of people's commitment to moral principles. Here, we sought to contribute to evaluating the construct validity of the Integrity Scale. We related the scale to various theoretically relevant criteria including low antagonism features, social-cognitive foundations for morality, self-control, rationality, and self-presentation behavior. Suggestive of the scale's construct validity, the present research showed that scores on

The early intervention safeguarding nurse pilot: an integrated model of working.

Some of the most vulnerable children will need co-ordinated help from health, children's services and other agencies. Co-ordinated and joint working hinges on effective communication at all levels. Evidence shows that direct verbal communication is a more effective way to share concerns and that this should be followed up by written information. Yet barriers persist that prevent this from happening. Integrated health and social care teams are purported to break down professional and communication barriers. This paper reports on the evaluation of a pilot integrated model of health and social ca

How place shapes diarrheal risk: An eco-social analysis of environmental and social infrastructures in riverine Indonesia.

Diarrheal disease remains strongly patterned by environmental and social inequalities in place-based riverine settings, where daily interaction with contaminated water environments shapes exposure risk. Guided by eco-social theory, this study examines how environmental and social infrastructures jointly structure diarrheal vulnerability in riverine communities of Jambi Province, Indonesia. A cross-sectional survey of 463 adult household heads was integrated with river water quality assessment and analyzed using a parsimonious structural equation model to estimate pathways linking social capita

Integrated care programmes for severe mental illnesses and comorbid physical health disorders: the EU-MIND umbrella review to inform future actions in Europe.

BACKGROUND: People with severe mental illness (SMI) represent up to 6% of the population and experience a high burden of physical comorbidity and premature mortality. Despite longstanding international calls to develop integrated care, the optimal organisational approaches for this population remain poorly defined, and health systems lack guidance on how to redesign care pathways. This review aimed to characterise the core components, reported impacts, and implementation challenges of existing integrated care programmes for individuals with SMI and physical health conditions. METHODS: This um
