Mercury vapors are released from paint containing mercury compounds used to prolong the shelf-life of interior latex paint. To determine whether homes recently painted with paint containing mercury had elevated indoor-air mercury concentrations, we studied 37 Ohio homes. Twenty-one homes painted with mercury-containing paint a median of 86 days earlier were compared with 16 homes not recently painted with mercury-containing paint. 10 hair samples of healthy subjects and 8 hair samples of patients with mucopolysaccharidosis III A were examined by two techniques in the native state and hydrolyzed. For the hydrolyzed samples transmission spectroscopy was used, for the studies on native hair we applied the attenuated reflection technique. The main differences between native and hydrolyzed hair were at 1450, 2337, 2362, 2850, 2870, 2917, 2930, 3080 cm-1. Aqueous solution of 2'-deoxyadenosine (5 X 10(-4) M, buffered at pH 7.0) was irradiated with 60Co gamma-rays under N2, O2, N2O and t-BuOH-N2 atmospheres in order to compare with adenine radiolysis previously reported. The effect of some general and local anaesthetics on the calcium-induced luminescence of aequorin was studied in vitro using a photomultiplier tube and recording technique. A semiautomated assay to determine aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) in aspirin tablets, powdered tablet composites, and pure drug substances is presented. The sample was dissolved in alcoholic buffer, diluted, and extracted with chloroform. The absorbance of the chloroform solution was read at 280 nm. Red squill bulbs, with reported specific rodenticidal properties, have been assayed for their content of the two main glycosides, scilliroside and scillaren A, by a method depending on the separation of the glycosides from purified plant extracts by tlc followed by spectrophotometric (uv and visible) determination of the individual glycosides in the eluates. The method was found convenient for assessment of the potency of red squill bulbs.

A gas chromatographic method for the routine determination of phenobarbital, primidone and diphenylhydantoin using alkaline extraction and on-column methylation has been developed. The procedure has been optimized for recovery of all three anticonvulsant drugs with particular attention to primidone. Correlation with photometric methods for phenobarbital and diphenylhydantoin show the technique offers significant advantages in both accuracy and precision over other methods.

We previously reported that 27% of 92 cholecystectomized patients had pigment stones (Am J Dig Dis 19:585-590, 1974). Using standard biochemical methods, we found that cholesterol accounted for an average of 77% of the dry weight of cholesterol stones, but that unconjugated bilirubin represented a mean of only 7% of pigment stones. When a microspectrophotometer was used to study cartilage, stained metachromatically with Azure A and Safranin O, the following 3 points were made: 1. the absorption maximum of stained cartilage matrix is identical to that reported for solutions of these dyes containing chondroitin sulfate; 2. partial enzymatic degradation of the cartilage matrix has no effect on the position of the absorption peak (although the intensity is greatly diminished); 3. ethanolic dehydration shifts the absorption peak somewhat toward the orthochromatic position, and decreases the intensity of the stain.
