Accuracy of Visual Inspection of Thickened Liquids: Implications for Multidisciplinary Dysphagia Management and Clinical Nutrition.

INTRODUCTION: To evaluate the accuracy of visually estimating thickened liquid volume via video-observed conditions and to determine whether clinical experience or thickener composition influences judgement reliability. METHODS: A cross-sectional online survey was administered to 57 practising speech-language pathologists (SLPs) and 50 postgraduate SLP students. Participants viewed four 12-s videos of fluids prepared to explicit International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative consistencies (Levels 1, 2 and 4) using starch and xanthan gum thickeners. Participants estimated the volumetr

Access to Communication Assessment and Intervention for Adults With Intellectual Disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Effective communication is essential for health, quality of life and social participation. Adults with communication disabilities-particularly those with intellectual disabilities-often face systemic barriers to accessing appropriate support. METHOD: A retrospective audit of 497 consultations from 276 adults with intellectual disabilities living in Australian group homes (2017-2022) was conducted at a private speech pathology clinic. The audit examined the proportion of patients recommended for and receiving a full communication assessment. RESULTS: A mixed method analysis was co

The perspectives of Jordanian speech-language pathologists towards the use of augmentative and alternative communication for persons with aphasia.

PURPOSE: Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) has been shown to support communication and quality of life for persons with aphasia (PWA), yet its use in Jordan remains underexplored. This mixed-methods study aimed to investigate the perspectives of Jordanian speech-language pathologists (SLPs) towards the use of AAC for PWA. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Phase 1 involved a nationwide survey of 142 SLPs, with 101 responses analysed descriptively. Phase 2 of the study comprised two focus group discussions with 10 SLPs whose caseloads predominantly included PWA. RESULTS: From Phase 1 of th

Feasibility and Reliability of the Adapted Kagan Scales for Rating Conversations for People With Acquired Brain Injury: A Multiphase Iterative Mixed-Methods Design.

PURPOSE: Rating the quality of conversations can assess communication skills in both people with acquired brain injury and their communication partners. This study explored the clinical feasibility and reliability of two conversation rating scales: the Adapted Measure of Participation in Conversation (MPC) and the Adapted Measure of Support in Conversation (MSC). METHOD: Raters were final-year speech and language therapy students (n = 14) and qualified clinicians (n = 2). Raters attended training on the Adapted MPC and MSC, watched 5 or 10 min of videotaped conversations (n = 23), and then sc

Presbyphagia to Dysphagia: Multiple Perspectives and Strategies for Quality Care of Older Adults.

The aging population is rapidly growing, requiring speech-language pathologists to better manage a caseload that includes older adults who have a variety of needs. The purpose of this review is to summarize and discuss the current available evidence that will allow speech-language pathologists to make informed clinical decisions when working with older adults. To facilitate this, this article first establishes an understanding of both normal and disordered swallowing physiology in older adults, including how to differentiate between functional changes to swallowing (presbyphagia) and dysphagia

Teaching Transnasal Endoscopy to Graduate Students Without a Hospital or Simulation Laboratory: Pool Noodles and Cadavers.

PURPOSE: This study reports on a training opportunity in endoscopy in which speech-language pathology graduate students use inanimate objects and cadavers. Best practices for transnasal endoscopy in vivo require a physician to be nearby, but many graduate programs do not have this access. METHOD: Endoscopy was offered as a graduate elective. Students (13 women) initially learned to manipulate the endoscope through the lumen of a swimming pool noodle that was embedded with trinkets. Endoscopic examination of inanimate objects became increasingly complex, followed by endoscopic examination of a…

Clinicoradiological and neuropathological evaluation of primary progressive aphasia.

BACKGROUND: Primary progressive aphasia (PPA) defines a group of neurodegenerative disorders characterised by language decline. Three PPA variants correlate with distinct underlying pathologies: semantic variant PPA (svPPA) with transactive response DNA-binding protein of 43 kD (TDP-43) proteinopathy, agrammatic variant PPA (agPPA) with tau deposition and logopenic variant PPA (lvPPA) with Alzheimer's disease (AD). Our objectives were to differentiate PPA variants using clinical and neuroimaging features, assess progression and evaluate structural MRI and a novel 18-F fluorodeoxyglucose positr

Mind Language Disturbances and PET-Signs of Depression vs Alzheimer's Disease: Are There Any Common Patterns Identified?

BACKGROUND: There is a broad appreciation that a diagnosis of depression (D) in the elderly is a strong risk factor for incident dementia, particularly Alzheimer's disease (AD). Indeed, the two disorders might constitute a dyad, although their causal relationship is uncertain, given the likely bidirectional and compounding effects of social withdrawal and loss of previous activities, and the manifestation of language disturbances, cognitive dysfunction, and social disruption that are typical of both conditions. We argue that language declines in D and AD share common patterns and biological un
