Prosthetic joint infections are often managed with debridement and implant retention (DAIR) or resection arthroplasty with destination spacer placement. Both surgical approaches require long courses of postoperative antibiotics, for which tetracycline antibiotics have not been well-studied. In this retrospective case series, we included patients at our institution treated for staphylococcal prosthetic joint infection managed with DAIR or destination spacer placement who were switched from IV antibiotics to oral tetracycline within 12 weeks of surgery. Our primary outcome of interest was treatm

Staphylococcus aureus, a major cause of nosocomial and community associated infections, is becoming increasingly resistant to antibiotics. S. aureus infections are frequently biofilm-associated, and a diverse spectrum of virulence factors are determinant in the pathogenicity, which can be an interesting target resulting in less selective pressure for bacterial resistance. This study reports anti-virulence activity against S. aureus, including a MRSA clinical isolate, of naphto-γ-pyrones from Aspergillus welwitschiae mycelium, and the characterization of chemical constituents by LC-DAD and LC-M

IL-23 is produced by dendritic cells, and other antigen presenting cells. IL-23 is required for the induction, expansion, maintenance and downstream effector functions of Th17 cells. Th17 cells upregulate neutrophil chemokines, antimicrobial peptides, and other pro-inflammatory cytokines. The lack of Th17 cells results in susceptibility to Candida, Streptococcal and Staphylococcal infections. On the contrary, the excess of Th17 cells induce various autoimmune diseases such as psoriasis. Several studies revealed that infections were more common in psoriatics than in healthy individuals. We used the broth microdilution method to determine the MICs of daptomycin and 13 comparator agents against 319 methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus isolates, 201 methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) isolates, and 183 coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS). Isolates were consecutively collected from bloodstream infections in 39 Spanish medical centers during a 3-month period (March through May 2008). Among MRSA, 1 isolate with intermediate susceptibility to vancomycin and 6 isolates resistant to linezolid were found. Nonsusceptibility to teicoplanin was detected in 3.9% of CoNS. Da

The review deals with the periodicity of the spread of methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) strains during the last 40 years, the mechanism of their resistance to methicillin and other beta-lactamic antibiotics, the genetic control of methicillin resistance, the genome organization of mec DNA and its possible cause, as well as the organization of epidemiological surveillance on MSRA in hospitals. The problem of changes in the epidemiology of staphylococcal infections due to the appearance of MRSA in the absence of contacts with carriers, treatment with antibiotics or stay in a hospital is di…

Primary pyomyositis is a bacterial infection occurring in skeletal muscle with no obvious local or adjacent cause. It is classically an infection of the tropics, although it is reported in temperate climates with increasing frequency. Tropical pyomyositis occurs predominantly in children aged between 2 and 5 and in adults aged between 20 and 45 years, whereas most temperate pyomyositis cases occur in adults. Using a magnetic resonance imaging scan, we made the diagnosis of staphylococcal pelvic pyomyositis in a Swiss term-born infant with an initial working diagnosis of septic hip osteoarthrit

Eight patients with invasive bacteremic community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infection in southeast Queensland, Australia, are reported. One patient died of septic shock. Haematogenous seeding to lungs, bone, and other sites was common. All isolates carried the virulence factor Panton-Valentine leukocidin and were either the southwest Pacific clone or the newly described Queensland clone. Clinicians should consider community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infection in any patient presenting to hospital with severe staphylococcal sepsis or pneumon

An outbreak of skin infection caused by a beta-lactamase-negative strain of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) occurred during a five-week period in a newborn nursery. Twelve babies, two mothers and two members of staff were involved. One baby had a diagnosis of staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome and two others required treatment with antibiotics. The infecting strain produced exfoliative toxin A. It was thought that it had been introduced from a different maternity unit by a nasal carrier. Laboratory investigations tended to support this hypothesis.

Norwegian (crusted) scabies is a rare but highly contagious variant of scabies that predominantly affects immunocompromised individuals, such as those with diabetes or neurological disorders. The condition is characterised by hyperkeratotic plaques teeming with mites, often leading to secondary bacterial infections and life-threatening complications. We present a fatal case of Norwegian scabies in a 65-year-old male with epilepsy and diabetes, who developed severe skin infestation, staphylococcal bacteremia, and multi-organ failure. Despite receiving aggressive treatment with oral ivermectin,

In the present study, we report the incidence of septic shock syndrome associated with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus in a child who initially presented influenza-like illness and developed septic shock shortly after 48 h of hospitalization, and eventually died within a few hours of the onset of sepsis. S. aureus isolated from the blood culture was characterized as the community-associated strain carrying the staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec (SCCmec) type IV element. Therefore, it is important to better understand the community-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus

Staphylococcus aureus persistently colonizes the nasopharynx of about one-third of the human population, a key risk factor for community- and hospital-acquired invasive infections. Current strategies for S. aureus decolonization include topical and systemic administration of antibiotics, which is associated with selection for antibiotic resistance and posttreatment recolonization. Using a mouse model for S. aureus colonization, we show here that systemic administration of a recombinant monoclonal antibody neutralizing staphylococcal protein A (SpA) can stimulate antibacterial immunoglobulin G

Ceftobiprole is a new cephalosporin with an extended spectrum activity against the majority of microorganisms isolated in bacteremia including methicillin-susceptible (MSSA) and -resistant S. aureus (MRSA). This antibiotic has demonstrated a potent activity against MRSA in animal models of endocarditis in monotherapy but particularly in combination with daptomycin, suggesting that this combination could be a future option to improve the outcome of staphylococcal endovascular infections. In addition, the extended-spectrum ceftobiprole activity, including coagulase-negative staphylococci, Entero

The Gram positive human pathogen Staphylococcus aureus causes a spectrum of human diseases including pneumonia, tissue and skin infections, endocarditis, pneumonia and sepsis. The increasing number of resistant bacteria and the threat of methicillin resistant S. aureus (MRSA) urge for the need to develop new antibacterial compounds. A prerequisite for development of such anti microbial compounds is a better understanding of the complex immune crosstalk between the pathogenic bacterium and its human host. To this end proteins staphylococcal proteins that contribute to innate immune evasion espe

Acute gastric dilatation is a potentially life-threatening entity that has been reported in patients with some acute infections like pneumonia and staphylococcal bacteremia. We describe a case of acute gastric dilatation presenting atypically in a 65-year-old diabetic with Salmonella diarrhoea. By the fourth day of hospital admission the patient's abdomen was distended in the absence of pain, nausea or vomiting. An abdominal radiograph showed marked gastric dilatation with no evidence of obstruction or ileus. With nasogastric tube insertion and initiation of intravenous antibiotics, the stomac

BACKGROUND: We describe three neonates who presented around the tenth day of life with multiple bilateral fluctuating cold abscesses situated in the lymph node areas, with secondary fistulation but without associated fever or general symptoms.
RESULTS: In all cases, Staphylococcus aureus was found in the abscesses and the umbilicus with similar antibiograms. The evolution was good and the children remained in good health afterwards.
CONCLUSION: Disseminated neonatal staphylococcal infections with a benign evolution are not commonly described in the medical literature. Clinically, cold inflam…

A radioimmunoassay for determination of human immunoglobulin G, A, and M class antibodies to Histoplasma capsulatum is reported. Yeast-phase antigen from H. capsulatum was adsorbed onto polyvinyl chloride microtiter plates as the solid phase. Human antibodies were allowed to react with this antigen, followed by addition of rabbit anti-human alpha- or mu-heavy chain sera. 125I-labeled staphylococcal protein A was then added and allowed to bind the human and rabbit immunoglobulin G. With this technique, it is possible to evaluate individual human serum samples for antigen-specific classes of ant

Staphylococcus aureus infection has become an increasingly grave problem in industrialised poultry farming. This first communication in a series of publications on highly involved studies and experiments describes manifestations of the most common staphylococcal infections in fowl, including synovitis with arthritis, osteomyelitis, dermatitis, endocarditis, septicaemia, wound infection, and ophthalmitis. Reference in greater detail is made to manifestations with more important economic consequences, such as synovitis with arthritis, osteomyelitis, and dermatitis. Their frequency, dependence on…

Susceptibility to recurrent staphylococcal cutaneous and respiratory infections beginning in infancy associated with extreme hyperimmunoglobulinemia E is a recently described primary immunodeficiency syndrome. Other clinical features include depressed cellular immunity and deficient antibody formation. Recurrent pneumonia and cyst formation with variable persistence and expansion characterized the radiographic couse in 11 patients. Five cysts resolved with continuous antistaphylococcal therapy; 2 were resected without recurrence; and 4 persisted after surgery and/or antibiotics (2--8 years). T

A skin infection survey of 1,084 people was carried out in two jungle villages in eastern Panama. Bacterial pyoderma was the most prevalent infection, affecting 25% of boys, 15% of girls, and 11% of those over 10 years of age. Streptococcus pyogenes and Staphylococcus aureus were recovered from 84% of pyodermas cultured. Nearly 60% of the cutaneous staphylococcal isolates were resistant to penicillin. Hippelates flies were seen feeding on purulent skin lesions and may have been important in transmission. Scabies, ringworm, candidiasis, and cutaneous leishmaniasis were in comparison with pyoder
