Feather picking and self-mutilation in psittacine birds.

Feather-picking and self-mutilation behaviors are common in psittacine birds. These behaviors are best defined as stereotypic behaviors or obsessive compulsive disorders. There is likely a genetic predisposition for these behaviors as reflected in the overrepresentation of a number of species of psittacines. Stereotypies most often result from a high level of arousal and the inability to respond with the appropriate natural behaviors. More specifically, conflict may be induced by the absence of releasing stimuli or target objects. On a chemical level, stereotypic behavior appears to be related

Providing mental health services to Arab Americans: recommendations and considerations.

Arab Americans are an extremely heterogeneous and frequently misunderstood group whose unique characteristics and cultural heritage have received little attention in the mental health literature. To effectively address the needs of Arab Americans, mental health professionals need to be aware of their own biases and misperceptions regarding Arab Americans, have an accurate understanding of Arab cultural and sociopolitical backgrounds, and be able to identify culturally appropriate interventions for use with Arab American clients. This article reviews common stereotyped beliefs many Americans ha

The role of nigral and thalamic output pathways in the expression of oral stereotypies induced by amphetamine injections into the striatum.

Microinjections of amphetamine into the ventrolateral striatum (VLS) elicit a striking behavioral syndrome characterized by compulsive oral and forelimb motor stereotypies. The neural pathways that mediate these behavioral responses downstream from the striatum have not yet been identified. In a series of experiments, we investigated the involvement of the substantia nigra pars reticulata (SNr) and the ventromedial nucleus of the thalamus (VMT) in the mediation of this behavioral syndrome. We demonstrated that lidocaine-induced reversible inactivation of the SNr reduced amphetamine-induced ste

The effect of object preferences on task performance and stereotypy in a child with autism.

The relationship between preferred objects associated with stereotypy, stereotypic behavior, and accuracy of responding during a counting task by a child with autism was analyzed. Object preference was determined by presenting the child with different sets of objects and asking him to choose one. His choices were then rank ordered into three groups: low, medium, and high preference objects. Counting performance within each of the three object groups was then analyzed in a multi-element design, alternating preference groups. Teaching with high-preference objects occasioned more stereotypic beha

Blink rate as an index of dopamine function in adults with mental retardation and repetitive behavior disorders.

Direct observation of blink rate was used as a noninvasive, in vivo estimate of dopamine function in adults with mental retardation and repetitive behavior disorders. Blink rate as measured in groups of stereotypy, compulsion, and control subjects was highly stable. Subjects with stereotypies had significantly lower blink rates than did control subjects. Although blink rates for compulsive subjects were not significantly different from those of control subjects, a subgroup of compulsive subjects with comorbid stereotypic behaviors displayed significantly lower blink rates. Significant inverse

Production of climbing behaviour in mice requires both D1 and D2 receptor activation.

The ability of SKF38393 (a D1 agonist), quinpirole (a D2 agonist), and apomorphine (a mixed D1/D2 agonist) to induce stereotyped climbing behaviour in mice was investigated. Apomorphine produced a dose-related increase in stereotyped cage climbing which lasted for up to 60 min. SKF38393 and quinpirole failed to produce climbing when administered alone. When given in combination intense apomorphine-like cage climbing was observed which lasted for up to 2 h. Apomorphine or the combination of SKF38393 and quinpirole also produced biting of the cage. The climbing behaviour produced by either apomo

Compensable back pain and migrants.

Ten years of cases of compensable back pain from a rehabilitation centre were reviewed for evidence that is relevant to the strongly negative stereotypes that are held commonly about migrant workers. The prevalence of migrant workers with back injuries was found to be similar to that in the occupations with higher accident liabilities in the surrounding municipalities. The relative proportion of musculoligamentous injuries and the more objectively confirmable back injuries was not related to the country of birth. Better predictors of treatment outcome were: the time that had elapsed between th

On the politics of madness: a preliminary analysis of the relationship between social roles and psychotherapy.

This study presents a brief account of a theory that argues that diagnostic categories of madness and their prototypes are equivalent to the fulfillment of the roles and role stereotypes of the status groups that tend to receive the diagnoses most often. Two studies provided tentative support for the theory. The results of the first study revealed that clinicians attributed to the stereotypes of various status groups precisely those diagnoses that the groups tend to receive. The second study revealed that undergraduates who were given diagnostic prototypes from the Diagnostic and Statistical M

Heritability of Locomotor Stereotypies in Chilean Horses.

The Chilean horse is a breed of closed registry. Stall-walking and weaving are locomotor stereotypies that affect this breed, and genetic predisposition has been suggested for both conditions. The objective of the present study was to estimate heritability of stall-walking and weaving in Chilean horses. Owners of 2,098 horses registered in the Chilean horse Stud Book, which were or had been stabled for at least 1 year, were asked to provide for identification data of the animal and presence or absence of stall-walking and/or weaving. The Chilean Horse Stud Book was accessed online, to collect

Immediate and subsequent effects of response interruption and redirection on targeted and untargeted forms of stereotypy.

A number of studies have shown that response interruption and redirection (RIRD) decreases immediate engagement in targeted stereotypic behaviors; however, its effects on untargeted stereotypy have not yet been studied, and its effects following removal of treatment are unclear. We evaluated the immediate and subsequent effects of RIRD on targeted motor stereotypy, as well as untargeted but higher probability vocal stereotypy, of two participants diagnosed with autism, using a three-component multiple-schedule design. Treatment with RIRD decreased immediate engagement in motor stereotypy for b

Autistic Symptoms in Children and Adolescents with Gender Dysphoria.

Studies have shown an increase of symptoms of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in gender dysphoria (GD). Various hypotheses try to explain this possible co-occurrence (e.g., a role of resistance to change, stereotyped behaviors or prenatal testosterone exposure). This study examined ASD symptoms with the Children's Social Behavior Questionnaire (CSBQ) in 490 children with GD compared to 2507 typically developing (TD) and 196 children with ASD. CSBQ total scores of the GD sample were in between scores from the TD and ASD sample. The GD sample showed elevated levels of autistic symptomatology on a

The Development and Correlates of Gender Role Orientations in African-American Youth.

This study charted the development of gendered personality qualities, activity interests, and attitudes across adolescence (approximately ages 9-18) among 319 African-American youth from 166 families. The relations between daily time spent with father, mother, and male and female peers-the gendered contexts of youth's daily activities-and (changes in) these gender role orientations were also assessed. Boys and girls differed in their gender role orientations in stereotypical ways: interest in masculine and feminine activities, and attitude traditionality generally declined, but instrumentality

Parent-Reported Repetitive Behavior in Toddlers on the Autism Spectrum.

Toddlers with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) were assessed on the Repetitive Behavior Scale-Revised (RBS-R), which we found to have acceptable internal consistency. Stereotypical subscale scores showed a negligible association with cognitive level, but correlated more strongly with adaptive and social indicators. Relative to earlier reported RBS-R scores for older age groups, toddlers' scores trended toward higher stereotyped behavior and lower ritualistic/sameness behavior. Our findings on associations with developmental indicators align with those of researchers who used more resource-intens

Examining Specialization Among Sex Offenders Released From Prison.

A prevailing cultural stereotype about sex offenders is that they tend to specialize in sexual offending. Many recent policy developments-mainly aimed to restrict the liberties of sex offenders-are rooted in this idea. We examined the correctional and arrest records of a sample of 312 sex offenders released on parole in Colorado to determine the prevalence of sexual specialization among these offenders, and to compare the legal and social characteristics of specialists and versatile sex offenders. Overall we found that very few participants officially classified as sex offenders fit the specia

Race-based shifting standards and racial discrimination.

Members of stereotyped groups tend to be judged relative to group-specific standards such that subjective descriptions (smart, aggressive, tall) mean something different when they are applied to members of different groups. A "shifting standards" effect is present when judgments of group members on objective rating scales show stronger evidence of assimilation to stereotypes than the same judgments on subjective scales. This research asks whether the tendency to shift standards when judging the academic competence of Black and White students is related to measures of racial prejudice and to ra

Comparison of the behaviour of European brown bears (Ursus arctos arctos) in six different parks, with particular attention to stereotypies.

In order to assess the influence of environmental parameters on their behaviour, 16 European brown bears were observed in six different zoological parks. Activities were measured by scan sampling and their relationships to housing conditions were established by multifactorial correspondence analysis and cluster analysis. The largest enclosures were characterised by high scores of play, social behaviours, eating, and interest in the inside as well as the outside of the enclosure. Because these parks were newer, their bears were the youngest of those studied. Stereotypies were associated with me

Lamotrigine in two cases of Rett syndrome.

Rett syndrome (RS) is a particular neurodevelopmental disorder in which symptoms develop in early infancy and manifests particular symptoms at certain ages. Two girls aged 4.5 and 2.5-years-old were admitted with complaints of seizures, regression of language, psychomotor development, and autistic behavior. They had fulfilled the criteria of classic RS. Lamotrigine was used in the treatment of the convulsions. After lamotrigine therapy, the convulsions were successfully controlled and the stereotyped hand movements and autistic behaviors markedly decreased. We would like to stress that, aside

Enhancement of dopamine release from the striatum through metabotropic glutamate receptor activation in methamphetamine sensitized rats.

An intracerebral microdialysis technique was applied to study the effect of metabotropic glutamate receptor (mGluR) agonist on dopamine release in the striatum of methamphetamine (MAP)-sensitized rats. Rats were treated with MAP (1 mg/kg, i.p.) once daily for 6 consecutive days, followed by a 6-day withdrawal. Perfusion of 0.1 mM (1S,3R)-1-aminocyclopentane-trans-1,3-dicarboxylic acid through a microdialysis probe placed in the striatum enhanced the extracellular dopamine level, and induced stereotyped behavior in MAP-sensitized rats. The enhancement of dopamine release and the stereotyped beh

Attenuation of amphetamine-stereotypy by mesostriatal dopamine depletion enhances plasma corticosterone: implications for stereotypy as a coping response.

The relationship between amphetamine-induced stereotyped behavior and a neuroendocrine index of arousal, plasma corticosterone (CCS), was investigated. 6-Hydroxydopamine lesions of the caudate-putamen, which produced dopamine depletions of 60%, blocked stereotypy and prolonged the elevation in corticosterone associated with d-amphetamine treatment (5 mg/kg). Similar dopamine depleting lesions of the nucleus accumbens, which attenuated the locomotor, but not the stereotypic, response to AMPH did not have this effect on CCS. This pattern of results supports the hypothesis that stereotypy has a c

Affective Predictions in Chronic Pain: Differential Associations With Pain Interference and Intensity.

BACKGROUND: Expectations have an important impact on emotion-pain interactions. Previous studies have primarily focused on the influence of pain-related expectations on perceived pain intensity. However, expectations regarding negative-valence information more broadly may impact perception beyond pain and be altered when pain becomes chronic. The current study aimed to investigate whether patients with chronic pain exhibit alterations in social-emotional expectations beyond pain perception. METHODS: Thirty-five adults with chronic pain, recruited at the Pain Unit of Hospital del Mar in Barcel
