Group B streptococcal infections in elderly adults.

Elderly adults account for >40% of persons with invasive group B streptococcal (GBS) disease and for >50% of GBS-associated deaths in the United States. The prevalence of colonization among healthy elderly adults (approximately 25%) is similar to that among women of childbearing age. Delineating contributions of comorbid conditions, altered integrity of anatomical barriers, and abnormalities in immune responses caused by immune senescence to pathogenesis require further investigation. Delayed clinical recognition of illness may contribute to poor outcome. Skin and soft-tissue infections and ba

[Hyperglycemia revealing neonatal infection].

BACKGROUND: Hyperglycemia as the first manifestation of neonatal sepsis is rare. CASE REPORT: A breast-fed neonate was admitted at the age of 6 days because of vomiting. Group B streptococci had been isolated in secretions of the ear at birth but the neonate had not been treated. At admission, physical examination was normal but glucosuria, without ketonuria, and hyperglycemia (9.7 mmol/l) were noted. Because hyperglycemia was not explained by usual causes, the baby was systemically given antibiotics. The next day, blood, spinal fluid and urine cultures taken on admission were positive for gr

Postpartum maternal group B streptococcal meningitis.

Maternal group B streptococcal (GBS) meningitis is rare, with only four cases previously reported in the literature. In this review a fifth case of postpartum GBS meningitis is presented. The five cases are compared with 34 cases of GBS meningitis in nonparturient adults. All cases of maternal GBS meningitis followed a vaginal delivery. The mean age of patients who had GBS meningitis outside the perinatal setting was 55 years, and most of these individuals had associated illnesses or frank immunosuppression; the mortality rate in this group was 23%. In contrast, all five patients with maternal

[Neonatal group B streptococcal pneumonia and right-sided diaphragmatic hernia: report of one case].

The symptoms of right-sided diaphragmatic hernia (RDH) rarely occur in the newborn period. The present report described a two-day-old neonate who presented with symptoms of respiratory distress and sepsis. Early onset group B beta-hemolytic streptococcal (GBBS) infection was diagnosed and RDH was found subsequently. A defect with smooth margin, sized 3 x 5 cm, located in posterior-lateral aspect of right diaphragm was observed during operation. After having been given antibiotics and surgical treatment, the infant recovered and was discharged in good condition. He has normal development at the

[Fundamental and clinical evaluations of ceftriaxone in neonates].

The antibacterial efficacy of ceftriaxone (CTRX) against group B Streptococcus and its clinical efficacy in newborns were examined, and the results obtained are summarized as follows. 1. MIC's of CTRX against 55 strains of B group Streptococcus from the pregnant vagina were 0.10 micrograms/ml or lower. 2. Efficacies of CTRX were good to excellent in 8 cases administered for treatment, 3 cases for prophylaxis and 1 for observation of adverse reactions. Observed adverse reactions included diarrhea in 4 cases and vomiting in 2 cases. As abnormal laboratory parameters, eosinophilia and thrombocyto

Cellulitis of the penis and scrotum due to group B streptococcus.

Group B streptococcus was isolated from the blood, penile exudate and needle aspirate of cellulitis in a severely ill neonate with a rapidly progressive infection of the scrotum, penis and lower abdominal wall. This case demonstrates the need to evaluate and to manage newborns with scrotal cellulitis differently than older children and adults. A different group of organisms and a greater likelihood for systemic involvement are to be anticipated in newborns.

Delayed recurrence of group B streptococcal infection in a newborn infant: a case report.

Recurrence of neonatal group B streptococcal (GBS) sepsis in an infant aged 63 days is reported. Recurrence of GBS should be considered in an infant who "goes off" after apparent eradication of the initial infection even after the neonatal period.

Genetic characterization and antimicrobial profiling of bacterial isolates collected from Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) affected by summer mortality syndrome.

In recent years, Egyptian tilapia aquaculture has experienced mortality episodes during the summer months. The causative agents responsible for such mortalities have not been clearly identified. A total of 400 fish specimens were collected from affected tilapia farms within five Egyptian governorates. A total of 344 bacterial isolates were identified from the examined fish specimens. Bacterial isolates were grouped into seven genera based on API 20E results. The most prevalent pathogens were Aeromonas spp. (42%), Vibrio spp. (21%), and Streptococcus agalactiae (14.5%). Other emerging infection…

Laboratory-controlled challenges of streptococcosis in Nile tilapia using the oral route (infected-feed) for infection.

The study aimed to evaluate the oral infected-feed, intragastric-gavage, and intraperitoneal routes of the Streptococcus agalactiae infection in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). For this purpose, 270 juveniles of Nile tilapia, with an average weight of 2 g, were distributed in 18 experimental units of 90 L, acclimatized, and raised for 55 days, until reaching 50 g (median weight). The experimental design was entirely randomized in six treatments, three of which were composed by bacterial infection routes: intraperitoneal 100 μL fish-1 [108 CFU], intragastric 100 μL fish-1 [108 CFU], feed …

Expression and functional characterization of a mannose-binding lectin-associated serine protease-1 (MASP-1) from Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) in host defense against bacterial infection.

Mannose-binding lectin-associated serine protease-1 (MASP-1), a multifunctional serine protease, plays an important role in innate immunity … ASP-1 expression was significantly up-regulated in spleen and head kidney following challenges with Streptococcus agalactiae and Aeromonas hydrophila. The up-regulations of OnMASP-1 mRNA and protein expression were also demonstrated in hepatocytes and monocytes/macrophages in vitro stimulation with S. agalactiae and A. hydrophila. Recombinant OnMASP-1 protein was likely t …

INTRODUCTION: Fever in newborn infants may be due to an invasive infection with potential morbidity and mortality. Our aim was to describe t … infection than in those with enterovirus infection (62,3 versus 9mg/L, P=0,008). Two patients with Streptococcus agalactiae meningitis, 1 with Staphylococcus aureus sepsis and 3 with enterovirus infection (manifested as myocarditis, hepatitis, and meningoencephalitis) required admission to the pediatric intensive care unit. Among these, 1 newborn with S. agalactiae and 2 …
