Factors Related to Post-traumatic Stress Disorder Symptoms Among Intensive Care Unit Nurses.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to identify the factors affecting the post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms of intensive care unit (ICU) nurses. The variables include event experiences, cognitive flexibility, and co-worker support. METHODS: A survey was conducted among 153 ICU nurses working in a general hospital or an advanced general hospital. The questionnaire was completed between October and December 2018, and 153 copies were used for the final analysis. Data were analyzed using multiple linear regression to determine the factors associated with PTSD symptoms among ICU nurses

PDE4B Missense Variant Increases Susceptibility to Post-traumatic Stress Disorder-Relevant Phenotypes in Mice.

Large-scale genome-wide association studies (GWASs) have associated intronic variants in PDE4B, encoding cAMP-specific phosphodiesterase-4B (PDE4B), with increased risk for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), as well as schizophrenia and substance use disorders that are often comorbid with it. However, the pathophysiological mechanisms of genetic risk involving PDE4B are poorly understood. To examine the effects of PDE4B variation on phenotypes with translational relevance to psychiatric disorders, we focused on PDE4B missense variant M220T, which is present in the human genome as rare codi

Rat Models in Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Research: Strengths, Limitations, and Implications for Translational Studies.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a multifaceted psychiatric disorder triggered by traumatic events, leading to prolonged psychological distress and varied symptoms. Rat models have been extensively used to explore the biological, behavioral, and neurochemical underpinnings of PTSD. This review critically examines the strengths and limitations of commonly used rat models, such as single prolonged stress (SPS), stress-re-stress (S-R), and predator-based paradigms, in replicating human PTSD pathology. While these models provide valuable insights into neuroendocrine responses, genetic pred

Autistic traits as predictors of post-traumatic stress symptoms among patients with borderline personality disorder.

BACKGROUND: Autistic traits (AT) seem to be particularly frequent among patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD). Moreover, the autism spectrum is considered a vulnerability factor for the development of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, increasing the vulnerability of BPD subjects toward the development of a stress-related disorder. AIM: The study aimed to investigate the association between AT and trauma-related symptoms in a clinical sample of patients with BPD. METHODS: A total of 48 patients with a clinical diagnosis of BPD and 52 healthy control (HC) subjects w

Elucidating trauma-related and disease-related regional cortical activity in post-traumatic stress disorder.

Trauma exposure may precipitate a cascade of plastic modifications within the intrinsic activity of brain regions, but it remains unclear which regions could be responsible for the development of post-traumatic stress disorder based on intrinsic activity. To elucidate trauma-related and post-traumatic stress disorder-related alterations in cortical intrinsic activity at the whole-brain level, we recruited 47 survivors diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder, 64 trauma-exposed controls from a major earthquake, and 46 age- and sex-matched healthy controls. All subjects were scanned with an

Cortical morphological changes and associated transcriptional signatures in post-traumatic stress disorder and psychological resilience.

BACKGROUND: Individuals who have experienced severe traumatic events are estimated to have a post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) prevalence rate ranging from 10 to 50%, while those not affected by trauma exposure are often considered to possess psychological resilience. However, the neural mechanisms underlying the development of PTSD, especially resilience after trauma, remain unclear. This study aims to investigate changes of cortical morphometric similarity network (MSN) in PTSD and trauma-exposed healthy individuals (TEHI), as well as the associated molecular alterations in gene expressi

Exploring the roles of compassion and post-traumatic stress disorder on global distress after sexual trauma.

OBJECTIVES: Recovery from sexual trauma can be complex and multi-faceted. Most current psychological treatment protocols for trauma use a cognitive model of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, sexual trauma may include specific complexities beyond that of a cognitive model of PTSD, such as relational factors. The distress experienced after sexual abuse may involve variables not exclusive to a PTSD model. Compassion focused therapy (CFT) is an approach that incorporates evolutionary, relational and social perspectives. This study explored the relationships between variables associat

[WHEN MEDICATIONS ARE NOT ENOUGH - NEUROFEEDBACK AS A COMPLEMENTARY TREATMENT FOR POST-TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER - A CASE REPORT].

Neurofeedback (NF) therapy is brain training using operant conditioning including real-time displays of brain activity to teach people how to regulate their brain function. We would like to present a treatment for a patient who experienced severe traumatic events on 7/10 including physical injury accompanied by difficulty sleeping for two months, nightmares, intrusive thoughts, difficulties in emotional regulation and difficulty in concentrating. Due to the complexity and difficulties in emotional regulation accompanied by severe sleep disturbances, it was decided to treat with medication in c

Effects of acupuncture on regulating the hippocampal inflammatory response in rats exposed to post-traumatic stress disorder.

Data from clinical and experimental studies have verified the efficacy and safety of acupuncture in the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, the concrete mechanism has not been well elucidated. The stress-induced activation of inflammatory response is involved in the development and pathogenesis of PTSD. Here, we aimed to investigate the effects of acupuncture on regulating the hippocampal inflammatory response in rats exposed to PTSD. Forty male rats were randomly divided into control, model, acupuncture and sertraline group. Within 1 day after adaptive feeding, all ra

Quasi-causal associations between chronotype and post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms: A twin study.

OBJECTIVE: The evening ("night owl") chronotype is associated with greater severity and lifetime prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms compared to morning or intermediate chronotypes. This twin study investigated the gene-environment relationships between chronotype, recent PTSD symptoms, and lifetime intrusive symptoms. METHODS: We used the reduced Horne-Östberg Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire (rMEQ) to assess chronotype in a sample of 3777 same-sex adult twin pairs raised together (70.4% monozygotic, 29.6% dizygotic) in the community-based Washington State Twin

The development of a smartphone app to enhance post-traumatic stress disorder treatment in high-risk workers.

OBJECTIVE: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is highly prevalent in certain populations. However, evidence indicates that many individuals do not respond to treatment. Digital supports hold promise for increasing service provision and engagement but there is a lack of evidence on blended care options and still less research guiding the development of such tools. This study details the development and overarching framework used to build a smartphone app to support PTSD treatment. METHODS: The app was developed in line with the Integrate, Design, Assess, and Share (IDEAS) framework for the

To Predict, Prevent, and Manage Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD): A Review of Pathophysiology, Treatment, and Biomarkers.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can become a chronic and severely disabling condition resulting in a reduced quality of life and increased economic burden. The disorder is directly related to exposure to a traumatic event, e.g., a real or threatened injury, death, or sexual assault. Extensive research has been done on the neurobiological alterations underlying the disorder and its related phenotypes, revealing brain circuit disruption, neurotransmitter dysregulation, and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis dysfunction. Psychotherapy remains the first-line treatment option for PTSD

Seeking safety intervention for comorbid post-traumatic stress and substance use disorder: A meta-analysis.

PROBLEM STATEMENT: Seeking Safety (SS) is a widely implemented cognitive-behavioral therapy for comorbid post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and substance use disorder (SUD). It is a present-focused coping skills model that is highly flexible, with varied methods of delivery, to maximize acceptability and client access. The purpose of this meta-analysis is to examine the effect of SS on comorbid PTSD and SUD across randomized control trials (RCTs). In addition, ours is the first meta-analysis to examine the dose-response of SS by comparing delivery of all 25 SS topics versus fewer. METHODS

Latent class analysis of post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms following exposure to Hurricane Ike.

BACKGROUND: There is substantial heterogeneity in how people react to potentially traumatic events (PTEs). Although some literature has explored this heterogeneity, there are only a few studies identifying factors associated with it within the disaster literature. OBJECTIVE: The current investigation identified latent classes of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms and differences between these classes after exposure to Hurricane Ike. METHODS: Adults living in Galveston and Chambers County, Texas, (n = 658) completed a battery of measures during an interview conducted two to five m

Association of age of adverse childhood experiences with thalamic volumes and post-traumatic stress disorder in adulthood.

BACKGROUND: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) have been linked to brain development and mental disorders, however, the impact of the age of occurrence of ACEs on thalamic volume and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after adult trauma remains unclear. This study assessed associations between ACEs at different ages to thalamic volumes and PTSD development following acute adult trauma. METHODS: Seventy-nine adult trauma survivors were recruited immediately after trauma. Within 2 weeks of the traumatic event, participants completed the PTSD Checklist (PCL) to assess PTSD symptoms, the Chi

Bothrops asper bite and post-traumatic stress disorder in Costa Rica: Report of two cases.

Snakebite envenoming (SBE) is a public health problem of high impact worldwide. The psychiatric consequences of SBE have been poorly documented. Here we present in detail the phenomenology of two clinical cases of Bothrops asper snakebite post-traumatic stress disorder (SBPTSD) in Costa Rica. We suggest that there is a characteristic presentation of SBPTSD and hypothesize that main contributors to the development of this disorder are: the systemic inflammatory response, the repetition of events that put the patient's life at risk and the human innate fear of snakes. Protocols for the preventio

A Mendelian randomization study of genetic liability to post-traumatic stress disorder and risk of ischemic stroke.

Observational studies have shown an association between post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and ischemic stroke (IS) but given the susceptibility to confounding it is unclear if these associations represent causal effects. Mendelian randomization (MR) facilitates causal inference that is robust to the influence of confounding. Using two sample MR, we investigated the causal effect of genetic liability to PTSD on IS risk. Ancestry-specific genetic instruments of PTSD and four quantitative sub-phenotypes of PTSD, including hyperarousal, avoidance, re-experiencing, and total symptom severity sc
