Methadone treatment programs commonly monitor patient compliance by screening urine samples for drugs of abuse. Our experience suggests that re-submission of urine samples (for example, providing a urine sample that is either not that of the patient or was previously submitted) is often used as a method of sample tampering. Recently there have been claims among drug users that some herbal drinks interfere with urinalysis for drugs of abuse and yield false positive results. Proof of such claims has yet to be shown. Screening for drugs of abuse is usually carried out using fluorescence polarization immunoassay (FPIA) or thin-layer chromatography (TLC). Fifty herbal samples which are considered among the most purchased herbs in the consumer market were used to investigate such claims. The drug groups that were tested for included amphetamines, opiates, barbiturates, cocaine metabolite, methadone, and their analogs.

Electronic health record systems (EHRs) play an increasingly important role in opioid agonist treatment. In Italy, an EHR called the Multi Functional Platform (MFP) is in use in 150 opioid-agonist treatment facilities in 8 of Italy's 23 regions. The aim of the study was to investigate the pattern of the use of drugs among young conscripts by a test screening of their urine. The participants in the investigation also filled in a questionnaire about use of drugs. The urine samples from 916 young recruits were examined for cannabinoids and 429 were also examined for amphetamines, cocaine, opiates and benzodiazepines. We found 68 (7.8%) positive tests for cannabis and a negligible number of positive tests for other drugs. This study identified predictors of reported sexual risk reduction among 109 female injection drug users enrolled in methadone clinics.
