Substance addiction is a chronic and relapsing brain disorder characterized by compulsive seeking and continued substance use, despite adverse consequences. The high prevalence and social burden of addiction are indisputable; however, the available intervention is insufficient. The modulation of gene expression and aberrant adaptation of neural networks are attributed to the changes in brain functions under repeated exposure to addictive substances. Considerable studies have demonstrated that miRNAs are strong modulators of post-transcriptional gene expression in substance addiction. The emerg

The shift from punitive responses to restorative public health approaches to tackle the problem of youth substance use and justice system involvement follow a nationwide trend. Hawai'i has made significant strides towards transforming the justice system and developing effective substance abuse programs. However, these efforts require changes in policies, practices, and paradigms to be fully and permanently realized. Such a philosophical shift requires a major reallocation of resources from downstream, high-cost punitive modalities, such as incarceration, to upstream solutions that allow adoles

High levels of substance-related disorders among incarcerated people have been documented and there is a lot of drug users in French prisons. Several health and social workers are involved in the management of people dealing with addictions in prison. The coordination between substance use and mental health services in correctional settings and in the community is fundamental to ensure treatment continuity for these people.

BACKGROUND: Heroin-assisted treatment has proven effective in reducing criminal offenses in opioid dependent individuals. Few studies attempted to explain the observed crime reduction and the reasons why these patients keep offending and getting incarcerated have to date not been explored.
METHODS: Patients with a history of incarcerations during the time of participating in heroin-assisted treatment (n = 22) were invited to a semi-structured, narrative interview. Findings were evaluated with Mayring's qualitative content analysis framework. Additionally, the Montreal Cognitive Assessment tes

Objectives: Approval/disapproval of substance use behavior might have a role in the development and persistence of substance use. However, less is known about the measurement function of disapproval of using different types of psychoactive substances. By using item response analyses, the present study aimed to examine the latent structure as well as item-level measurement properties of the construct of substance use disapproval. Methods: Nationally representative adult samples derived from the National Survey on Addiction Problems in Hungary from 2015 (N=2274) and 2019 (N=1385) were used in th

BACKGROUND: Drug addiction is a chronic biochemical drug use disorder that affects the human brain and behaviour, and leads to an uncontrollable use of a licit or illicit drug. Drug addiction can commence, usually in the young, with the use of a non-medical or a recreational drug in social gatherings, which becomes more frequent over a period of time. It is associated with incremental doses of the drug in order to achieve a state of euphoria. Addiction to drugs has been identified as a relevant social and health problem presenting a risk to public health, especially with regards to communicabl

AIM: Tobacco use is decreasing in the general youth population yet little evidence is tracking changes in young people who are engaged with youth alcohol and other drug (AOD) services that are often disengaged from school and wok settings.
METHOD: This study reviews tobacco use amongst 1823 young people engaged with youth AOD services in Victoria in 2013 and 2017 from the Youth Needs Census. This study contrasted use patterns over the three-year period against Australian population data.
RESULTS: The results show tobacco use is not declining in the youth AOD engaged population as observed wi

BACKGROUND: Civil commitment for individuals with severe substance use is fairly common and a part of many treatment systems worldwide. In Sweden, individuals with severe substance use and experience with civil commitment are more likely to use higher levels of alcohol and drugs, to be younger, and be more socially marginalized compared to their counterparts. The study examined whether civil commitments for severe substance use increased the likelihood of imprisonment following the civil commitment.
METHOD: Baseline ASI-data merged with national registry data on prison sentences (2007 through

Drug courts have been in operation for decades to provide treatment alternatives to individuals whose substance use and related behaviors have brought them into contact with the criminal justice system. As research on drug courts have evolved, it has been demonstrated that different types of offenders have different mental health and substance use treatment needs. One way of approaching treatment in court-mandated substance use treatment is by the application of the risk-need-responsivity (RNR) model (Andrews, Zinger et al., 1990). The Orleans Parish Drug Court expanded assessment and treatmen

Current literature expounds on community and personal factors contributing to the rapidly growing number of women involved in the criminal justice system. Contributing factors are complex and interwoven, leaving women with life patterns of trauma exposure, mental illness, and substance use disorders. Consequences of these life patterns and incarceration have a significant impact on maternal role attainment. The conceptual model Mothering and Incarceration organizes the multifaceted life patterns of incarcerated women and the influences on a woman's ability to mother her children during and fol

The reentry process from prison to the community is rife with obstacles. Substance use problems, in particular, can present significant barriers to successful reentry. However, little research has examined the various roles that substance use plays during reentry from the perspective of those reentering the community. The current study explores reentry experiences of people who have been recently released from prison with a specific focus on their experiences with substance use during the reentry process. Using thematic analysis, the present study explored substance use experiences from 26 sem

We propose that discussions of benzodiazepines in the current psychiatric literature have become negatively biased and have strayed from the scientific evidence base. We advocate returning to the evidence in discussing benzodiazepines and adhering to clear definitions and conceptual rigour in commentary about them.

Use of benzodiazepine and Z-drug is common in Switzerland, also for prolonged periods of time. Physical dependence, psychological dependence and a syndrome of dependence may ensue. Related to a lack of well-established medical guidelines, current clinical practices are subject to debate. Also controversial is the need to request an authorization from the cantonal health authorities before starting treatment with these controlled substances. The present article describes the limited circumstances in which such prior authorization is required.

There is a high co-occurrence of risky substance use among adults with traumatic brain injury (TBI), although it is unknown if the neurologic sequelae of TBI can promote this behavior. We propose that to conclude that TBI can cause risky substance use, it must be determined that TBI precedes risky substance use, that confounders with the potential to increase the likelihood of both TBI and risky substance use must be ruled out, and that there must be a plausible mechanism of action. In this review, we address these factors by providing an overview of key clinical and preclinical studies and li

Drug addiction is a major worldwide medical and social problem.Cocaine, nicotine, methamphetamine, heroin and other psychoactive substances, with small molecular weight, can easily cross the blood-brain barrier and eventually lead to addiction and other serious neuropsychological damage. There is no effective cure for addiction currently. The drug-antibody complex formed on the basis of active or passive immunotherapy could not cross the blood-brain barrier, which reduces the concentration of the free active drug and prevents its distribution in the brain, thereby weakening the drug addiction-related r

This systematic review synthesized the literature examining addiction substitution during recovery from substance use or behavioral addictions. A total of 96 studies were included with sample sizes ranging from 6 to 14,885. The most common recovery addictions were opioids (30.21%), followed by cannabis (20.83%), unspecified use (17.71%), nicotine (12.50%), alcohol (12.50%), cocaine (4.17%), and gambling (2.08%). Statistical results were provided by 70.83% of the studies. Of these, 17.65% found support for addiction substitution, whereas 52.94% found support for concurrent recovery. A total of

Background:A significant proportion of individuals seeking treatment for substance use disorders (SUDs) have experienced sexual victimization, which has been shown to disrupt the efficacy of SUD treatment services. Objective: To evaluate the relationship between lifetime sexual victimization and SUD treatment completion. Methods: Relevant literature was identified through a systematic, computerized search of nine electronic databases (May 2018) and reference harvesting, yielding 15 peer-reviewed articles published between 1992 and 2017. Two authors independently conducted title and abstract sc
