INTRODUCTION: Toxicity related to calcium-channel blockers remains a significant cause of morbidity and mortality. Amlodipine-induced shock is unique in that its mechanism of action is thought to occur in part via the release of nitric oxide (NO) in the peripheral vasculature. Specific therapeutic interventions, including methylene blue (an NO scavenger), have been suggested, but efficacy studies are severely limited. To facilitate a larger porcine study into the effect of various interventions on amlodipine toxicity, we undertook this model development and feasibility study.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the first part of the present study was to specify risk factors for the development of adventitious bursae on the limbs of weaning and finishing pigs.

Statutory recording of carcass lesions at the abattoir may have significant potential as a resource for surveillance of livestock populations. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the splitting pathways of the (lingual) fracture lines during a bilateral sagittal split osteotomy (BSSO) in cadaveric pig mandibles.
STUDY DESIGN: A BSSO was performed using splitters and separators. Special attention was paid to end the horizontal medial cut at the deepest point of the entrance of the mandibular foramen.
RESULTS: Of all lingual fractures, 95% ended in the mandibular foramen. Forty percent of these fractures extended through the mandibular canal and 40% extended inferiorly along the mandibular canal.
CONCLUSION: Almost all lingual fracture lines ended

Regulatory programs for brucellosis in domestic livestock have been active in the U.S. for almost 80 years. Wildlife reservoirs of brucellosis include bison (Bison bison) and elk (Cervus elaphus nelsonii) for Brucella abortus whereas Brucella suis is the predominant species infecting feral swine.
