The case of a 22-year-old female who developed a mass in the anterior maxilla after using Melanotan II, a nasal spray containing a synthetic analogue of melanocyte-stimulating hormone, is reported. The patient had used the nasal spray for tanning purposes. Melanotan II is unlicensed, and its sale is illegal in the United Kingdom and in many other countries around the world. Skin cancer represents an important public health problem, and it is associated with ultraviolet radiation exposure, particularly at early ages. A psychosocial model of sun protection and sunbathing as distinct behaviors was developed on 202 young Caucasian women and replicated in an … un protect; sunbathing norms predicted only intention to sunbathe. Susceptibility and advantages of tanning predicted both intention constructs, which, in turn, predicted behavior. These findings distinguish sun protection from sunbathing and provide a basis for intervention design.

We examined knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors related to skin cancer, sun exposure, sunscreen use, and use of tanning booths in 903 female and 800 male adolescents. Wastewater from tanneries contains high concentrations of organic matter, chromium, nitrogen, and sulfur compounds. Immunologic examinations of leather-dressers, suffering from eczemas and dermatitis due to exposure to potassium bichromate have revealed immunologic shifts, particularly marked in combinations of the dermatoses with mycoses of the soles. Melanonychia is a black, tan, or brown streak within the nail plate subsequent to activation of melanocytes in the nail matrix. We present a case of a Haitian girl who presented with transverse melanonychia involving all 10 fingernails in the setting of hyperthyroidism and acute liver injury. Melanonychia has been described only one time in the literature in the setting of hyperthyroidism though this patient also underwent radium treatment which could have led to nail changes.

The nipples of male tan guinea pigs were used to test the effects on the skin of oral contraceptive pills and drugs. The daily topically applied doses were 1/2,000 of a pill. After 3 weeks, the nipples treated with solutions of ethinyloestradiol-containing pills had grown (200-300%), the epidermis showed acanthosis (150-250%) and strong hyperpigmentation. Mestranol-containing pills as well as pure progestogen substances did not produce these effects.

Parovarian nodules encountered during ovariohysterectomy were identified histologically as ectopic adrenocortical tissue. Specimens were examined from 17 healthy female cats aged 6 months to 5 years. The structures were gold to tan, 2 to 5 mm in diameter, and located in the broad ligament within 4 cm of the ovary. Their histologic appearance resembled normal adrenal cortices, with remnants of mesonephric tissue. Adrenal medullary tissue was not found.

We report herein a woman sensitive to nylon stockings of only brown or tan shade. Her situation is interesting for several reasons: she does not react to paraphenylediamine and she reacts to red and yellow dyes, but not to blue or the finish; however, when finish is applied to dyed blanks (red, yellow, or blue) she reacts vigorously to all three. We suspect the finish reacts with the dyes to either expose or produce an antigen previously not available to the skin.
