After-shift Musculoskeletal Disorder Symptoms in Female Workers and Work-related Factors: A Cross-sectional Study in a Seafood Processing Factory in Vietnam.

BACKGROUND: The seafood processing industry has been developing and providing marked contribution to Vietnam's economic growth in recent years. However, information on working conditions and their impacts to workers' health in this sector, focusing on musculoskeletal problems in female workers, has been poorly documented. OBJECTIVES: This paper examines the prevalence of after-shift musculoskeletal disorder symptoms (A-MSDS) and work-related factors in female workers in a seafood processing factory in Vietnam. MATERIALS AND METHODS: As part of a comprehensive study, a cross-sectional survey

Internally directed cognition and mindfulness: an integrative perspective derived from predictive and reactive control systems theory.

In the present paper, we will apply the predictive and reactive control systems (PARCS) theory as a framework that integrates competing theories of neural substrates of awareness by describing the "default mode network" (DMN) and anterior insula (AI) as parts of two different behavioral and homeostatic control systems. The DMN, a network that becomes active at rest when there is no external stimulation or task to perform, has been implicated in self-reflective awareness and prospection. By contrast, the AI is associated with awareness and task-related attention. This has led to competing theor

Upper limb recovery after stroke is associated with ipsilesional primary motor cortical activity: a meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Although neuroimaging studies have revealed specific patterns of reorganization in the sensorimotor control network after stroke, their role in recovery remains unsettled. To review the existing evidence systematically, we performed activation likelihood estimation meta-analysis of functional neuroimaging studies investigating upper limb movement-related brain activity after stroke. METHODS: Twenty-four studies using sensorimotor tasks in standardized coordinates were included, totaling 255 patients and 145 healthy controls. Across the entire brain, we compared task-re

Children's selective attention to pain and avoidance behaviour: the role of child and parental catastrophizing about pain.

The present study investigated selective attention to pain in children, its implications for child avoidance behaviour, and the moderating role of dimensions comprising child and parental catastrophizing about pain (ie, rumination, magnification, and helplessness). Participants were 59 children (31 boys) aged 10-16 years and one of their parents (41 mothers). Children performed a dot-probe task in which child facial pain displays of varying pain expressiveness were presented. Child avoidance behaviour was indexed by child pain tolerance during a cold-pressor task. Children and parents complete

Orienting auditory spatial attention engages frontal eye fields and medial occipital cortex in congenitally blind humans.

What happens in vision-related cortical areas when congenitally blind (CB) individuals orient attention to spatial locations? Previous neuroimaging of sighted individuals has found overlapping activation in a network of frontoparietal areas including frontal eye fields (FEF), during both overt (with eye movement) and covert (without eye movement) shifts of spatial attention. Since voluntary eye movement planning seems irrelevant in CB, their FEF neurons should be recruited for alternative functions if their attentional role in sighted individuals is only due to eye movement planning. Recent ne

Cerebellar output shapes cortical preparatory activity during motor adaptation.

The cerebellum plays a key role in motor adaptation by driving trial-to-trial recalibration of movements based on previous errors. In primates, cortical correlates of adaptation are encoded already in the pre-movement motor plan, but these early cortical signals could be driven by a cerebellar-to-cortical information flow or evolve independently through intracortical mechanisms. To address this question, we trained female macaque monkeys to reach against a viscous force field (FF) while blocking cerebellar outflow. The cerebellar block led to impaired FF adaptation and a compensatory, re-aimin

Neural dynamics of semantic categorization in semantic variant of primary progressive aphasia.

Semantic representations are processed along a posterior-to-anterior gradient reflecting a shift from perceptual (e.g., it has eight legs) to conceptual (e.g., venomous spiders are rare) information. One critical region is the anterior temporal lobe (ATL): patients with semantic variant primary progressive aphasia (svPPA), a clinical syndrome associated with ATL neurodegeneration, manifest a deep loss of semantic knowledge. We test the hypothesis that svPPA patients perform semantic tasks by over-recruiting areas implicated in perceptual processing. We compared MEG recordings of svPPA patients

Recollection deficits in dysphoric mood: an effect of schematic models and executive mode?

Depression and dysphoric mood states are often accompanied by quantitative or qualitative shifts in performance across a range of retention tasks. This study focuses on the recollection of both autobiographical events and word lists in dysphoric states. Recollection occurs when people are aware of some contextual detail allied to the encoding experience. This study establishes the presence of a recollection deficit in dysphoria in two distinct paradigms. In both autobiographical recall and in recognition memory, recollection in a dysphoric group was at lower levels than recollection in matched

Adults with dyslexia show deficits on spatial frequency doubling and visual attention tasks.

We examine the visual processing of high-functioning adults with developmental dyslexia (mean Performance IQ = 126.5) and current phonological problems. In comparison to an age- and IQ-matched control group, the group with dyslexia showed deficits in two tasks associated with magnocellular/dorsal pathway function. For the 'frequency doubling' stimulus (grating of 0.25 cpd modulated at 25 Hz counterphase flicker), contrast thresholds for detection were raised in the dyslexic group. In conjunction visual search, a display time sufficient for controls to achieve ceiling accuracy at all set sizes

The Role of Cognitive Deficits in Borderline Personality Disorder with Early Traumas: A Mediation Analysis.

(1) Background: although studies of cognitive functions are still limited in borderline personality disorder (BPD), the initial evidence suggested that BPD patients have deficits of executive functions and social cognition. In addition, patients who report physical and psychic traumatic experiences in childhood and adolescence show considerable neurocognitive impairment and severe BPD symptoms. The present study has a twofold aim: (1) to evaluate the differences in neurocognitive performances between BPD patients and healthy controls and (2) to verify in the BPD patients group whether neurocog

Scale-up of the DMPA-SC in Nigeria: Why policy matters.

BACKGROUND: Injectable contraceptives have contributed substantially to Nigeria's rise in modern family planning methods usage. They are one of the most commonly used and preferred means of contraception among women in the country. Enabling policies are required to assure contraceptive access, security, and use. This study aimed to investigate the policy environment and how it supports or limits Nigeria's introduction and scale-up of subcutaneous depot-medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA-SC). METHODS: The design of this mixed-methods study was cross-sectional. Desk reviews of policy papers, key

Assessment of neuropsychological performance in Mexico City youth using the Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery (CANTAB).

BACKGROUND: The Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery (CANTAB) is a computerized tool used to measure cognitive function in diverse populations and is sensitive for assessing developmental changes in children. Although CANTAB has been used in several countries, its applicability in a Mexican child population is unknown. This study examined developmental trends on CANTAB in a large sample of urban Mexico City youth and tested the hypothesis that their performance would be similar to a large US normative sample. METHOD: As part of a birth cohort, Early Life Exposures in Mexico to

Domain-Aware Dual Attention for Generalized Medical Image Segmentation on Unseen Domains.

Recently, there has been significant progress in medical image segmentation utilizing deep learning techniques. However, these achievements largely rely on the supposition that the source and target domain data are identically distributed, and the direct application of related methods without addressing the distribution shift results in dramatic degradation in realistic clinical environments. Current approaches concerning the distribution shift either require the target domain data in advance for adaptation, or focus only on the distribution shift across domains while ignoring the intra-domain

Foot force direction control during leg pushes against fixed and moving pedals in persons post-stroke.

The component of foot force generated by muscle action (F(m)) during pedaling in healthy humans has a nearly constant direction with increasing force magnitude. The present study investigated the effect of stroke on the control of foot force. Ten individuals with hemiparesis secondary to a cerebral vascular accident performed pushing efforts against translationally fixed and moving pedals on a custom stationary cycle ergometer. We found that while F(m) direction remained constant with increasing effort in both the fixed- and moving-crank conditions for both limbs, the orientation of that force

Functional Ankle Range of Motion but Not Peak Achilles Tendon Force Diminished With Heel-Rise and Jumping Tasks After Achilles Tendon Repair.

BACKGROUND: Deficits in sporting performance after Achilles tendon repair may be due to changes in musculotendinous unit structure, including tendon elongation and muscle fascicle shortening. PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: The purpose was to discern whether Achilles tendon rupture reduces triceps surae muscle force generation, alters functional ankle range of motion, or both during sports-related tasks. We hypothesized that individuals who have undergone Achilles tendon repair lack the functional ankle range of motion needed to complete sports-related tasks. STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive laboratory study.

Fluctuations in real-life drinking in alcohol use disorder: A one-year longitudinal study using gamified tasks of decision making and cognitive control.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a major contributor to global disability and mortality. Cross-sectional studies have linked AUD to reduced cognitive control and heightened risky decision-making. However, the temporal direction of these effects remains unknown: are cognitive-behavioral alterations a consequence or a precursor of changes in drinking? METHODS: We deployed a battery of smartphone-based, gamified tasks in a one-year longitudinal ecological momentary assessment study of N=603 participants diagnosed with mostly mild to moderate AUD. Tasks measured cognitive control (workin

Editorial Commentary: When Biomechanics Apparently Conflicts With Clinical Practice: The Role of Translational Medicine Regarding Combined Anterior Cruciate Ligament and Lateral Knee Reconstruction.

The role of the anterolateral ligament as a secondary restraint to the anterior cruciate ligament in controlling tibial internal rotation and pivot shift is greatly debated today because biomechanical studies lead to conflicting results. However, extra-articular reconstructions used along with intra-articular reconstructions seem to be able to improve knee stability and reduce the rate of failure, especially when a graft other than bone-patellar tendon-bone is used as an anterior cruciate ligament substitute. For translational medicine, the task is to fill the gap between laboratory studies an
