Blastocystis sp. is a widespread microorganism that colonizes the intestinal tract of several animals, including human beings, while its pathogenic role in humans is still under debate. The objective of the present study was to describe the frequency of Blastocystis sp. subtypes (STs) and their genetic variation within and among samples recovered from scholars inhabiting two rural villages with tropical climates and compare this information with previously documented data from arid and temperate zones in Mexico. Blastocystis sp. positive samples and ST identification were achieved by coprologi

Toxoplasma gondii is one of the most common foodborne protozoan parasite causing congenital infection, abortion, and stillbirth in humans and animals. The temperate and humid climate is one of the most important factors in the high prevalence of T. gondii. Sheep are among the important sources of meat production in Guilan province, Iran. Therefore, the consumption of raw and half-cooked meat is one of the major risk factors for T. gondii infection. Toxoplasmosis in patients with intact immune systems is usually asymptomatic; however, it but can be life-threatening in patients with a weak immun

INTRODUCTION: Mental health difficulties are common among people with Huntington's disease (HD). However, such difficulties are only weakly associated with HD progression, suggesting their causes may be multifactorial rather than purely disease-related. Genetically unaffected family members have been shown to experience similar levels of mental distress to people with HD, potentially due to systemic stressors and life disruption. These factors may also influence mental wellbeing in people with HD. Accordingly, this study aimed to compare patterns and occurrence of mental distress between peopl

Rear-edge tree populations forming the equatorward limit of distribution of temperate species are assumed to be more adapted to climate variability than central (core) populations. However, climate is expected to become more variable and the frequency of climate extremes is forecasted to increase. Climatic extreme events such as heat waves, dry spells and spring frosts could become more frequent, and negatively impact and jeopardize rear-edge stands. To evaluate these ideas, we analyzed the growth response of trees to successive spring frosts in a mixed forest, where two temperate deciduous sp

Osteomyelitis, or bone infection, is often induced by antibiotic resistant Staphylococcus aureus strains of bacteria. Although debridement and long-term administration of antibiotics are the gold standard for osteomyelitis treatment, the increase in prevalence of antibiotic resistant bacterial strains limits the ability of clinicians to effectively treat infection. Bacteriophages (phages), viruses that in a lytic state can effectively kill bacteria, have gained recent attention for their high specificity, abundance in nature, and minimal risk of host toxicity. Previously, we have shown that CR

Increasing levels of anthelmintic resistance observed in equine cyathostomin parasites have led to recommendations of selective anthelmintic treatment strategies to lower the selection pressure favoring resistant populations. This principle is based on determining strongyle fecal egg counts from all herd members, and treating those exceeding a predetermined treatment cutoff. However, epidemiological information is lacking from horses kept under tropical conditions, where parasite burdens may be of a different composition and magnitude compared to those of horses kept under temperate climate co

We examined the initial physiological responses and subsequent capacity to swim following cold-water immersion. An ecologically-valid model was used whereby immersion was sudden (<2s) and participants had to actively remain afloat. Participants (15 skilled swimmers, 17 less-skilled swimmers) undertook four experimental test sessions: a physiological test and a swimming test in both cold (10°C) water and temperate (27°C) water in a swimming flume (temperature order counter-balanced). For physiological testing, measures of brain perfusion [flow velocity (MCAv, Doppler) and oxygenation (NIRS)] an

BACKGROUND: There are grounds to believe that the course of bipolar disorder may be different in tropical countries such as India when compared to temperate nations. There is a dearth of literature about the course of bipolar I disorder from India.
METHODS: This study was conducted in a multispecialty teaching hospital in southern India. Patients with a DSM-IV TR diagnosis of bipolar I disorder, confirmed using SCID-I, with a minimum duration of illness of 3 years were assessed. Information was gathered on demographic and clinical variables, and the life course of episodes was charted using t

BACKGROUND: Most information on invasive Staphylococcus aureus infections comes from temperate countries. There are considerable knowledge gaps in epidemiology, treatment, drug resistance and outcome of invasive S. aureus infection in the tropics.
METHODS: A prospective, observational study of S. aureus bacteraemia was conducted in a 1000-bed regional hospital in northeast Thailand over 1 year. Detailed clinical data were collected and final outcomes determined at 12 weeks, and correlated with antimicrobial susceptibility profiles of infecting isolates.
PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Ninety-eight patie

There is a general trend that parasitism risk declines as latitude increases. Host populations breeding at high latitudes should therefore invest less in costly immune defenses than populations breeding in temperate or tropical zones, although it is unknown if such an effect is mediated by environmental (photoperiodic) or genetic factors or both. Acquired immune function (humoral, cell-mediated) and behavioral sickness responses to lipopolysaccharide (LPS; mimics bacterial infection) were assessed in two subspecies of white-crowned sparrow (Zonotrichia leucophrys) that breed at different latit

Animals need to adjust reproductive decisions to environmental seasonality. In contrast to species from the well-studied temperate zones, little is known for tropical birds about the environmental cues that stimulate reproductive activity and the physiological mechanisms that regulate reproduction. I am investigating the environmental and endocrine mechanisms that underlie the timing of reproduction in spotted antbirds from the near-equatorial Panamanian rainforest and in small ground finches from the equatorial arid Galápagos islands. Spotted antbirds live in a fairly predictable seasonal env

Bacteria of the genus Moraxella are significant pathogens in both human clinical practice and veterinary medicine. A novel bacteriophage, designated vB_MboM_ZALNahr, was isolated from environmental sources (wastewater from the Moscow Region) and morphologically classified as a myovirus lytically active against Moraxella spp. The phage exhibits a broad spectrum of lytic activity, affecting 76% of the tested Moraxella isolates of various origins. Genome sequencing revealed integrase genes, indicating the temperate nature of the phage and limiting its therapeutic potential. Phylogenetic analysis

Exposed to prolonged and extreme heat, outdoor workers face significant risks of acute and chronic kidney damage, including acute kidney injury and chronic interstitial nephritis in agricultural communities. Growing concerns over heat-related health issues in temperate, continental, and dry climates call for adaptive public health strategies that span diverse geographic areas. This communication reviews the policies in the United States addressing heat-related stress, identifies barriers to implementing effective health policies, and provides recommendations underscoring the need for comprehen

Recurrent acute pancreatitis (RAP) is a complex syndrome that presents variably, with many cases remaining idiopathic after thorough diagnostics. For evaluating structural etiologies, endoscopic ultrasound and MR cholangiopancreatography are preferred over endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) given their more favorable risk profile and sensitivity. The diagnostic work-up remains paramount since treatment should focus on addressing underlying causes such as early cholecystectomy for gallstone pancreatitis. As more etiologic factors are uncovered, such as genetic susceptibility,

Aspiration of foreign bodies is common and among the leading causes of accidental death in children. When detected promptly, an experienced physician can successfully manage foreign bodies of the airway. However, uncommon objects and physical trauma can complicate their removal. Inhalation of organic and inorganic foreign bodies of all types is well documented, but glass in the airway is an unusual and difficult problem. Further, airway foreign bodies in conjunction with an unstable cervical spine are rare. Polytrauma tends to complicate any case. We present a case illustrating both circumstan

Endocrine comorbidities have become increasingly important medical considerations as improving cystic fibrosis (CF) care increases life expectancy. Although the underlying pathophysiology of CF-related diabetes remains elusive, the use of novel technologies and therapeutics seeks to improve both CF-related outcomes and quality of life. Improvements in the overall health of those with CF have tempered concerns about pubertal delay and short stature; however, other comorbidities such as hypogonadism and bone disease are increasingly recognized. Following the introduction of highly effective modu

The purpose of this study is to summarize the life and work of the French anatomist and surgeon Antoine Ferrein (1693-1769). Ferrein made an impact in the history of anatomy and physiology through his work and especially with the description of phonation, renal anatomy, and liver and biliary structure. He also made an impact on ophthalmology with the description of the eyelid and its diseases. After a thorough review of the literature, we present in this review his life and his main discoveries with special emphasis on the anatomic description of the vocal chords resembling the chords of a vio

Urogenital schistosomiasis is a parasitic disease caused by S. haematobium which is endemic in tropical and sub-tropical areas but is increasingly diagnosed in temperate non-endemic countries due to migration and international travels. Early identification and treatment of the disease are fundamental to avoid associated severe sequelae such as bladder carcinoma, hydronephrosis leading to kidney failure and reproductive complications. Radiologic imaging, especially through ultrasound examination, has a fundamental role in the assessment of organ damage and follow-up after treatment. Imaging fin

Bed bugs are small hematophagous insects. They are found in temperate and tropical climates around the world. Their vectorial capacity for several pathogens, including Bartonella spp., has been suspected. An experimental study of artificial infection of Cimex lectularius with Bartonella quintana and Bartonella henselae bacteria was developed to evaluate the ability of MALDI-TOF MS to simultaneously identify bed bugs and their infectious status. This experimental study confirmed the ability of MALDI-TOF MS to identify bed bugs. In addition, it was able to differentiate between control bed bugs,

Dengue fever is caused by a flavivirus. This infection is endemic in the tropics and warm temperate regions of the world. Ocular manifestations of dengue fever include subconjunctival, vitreous, and retinal haemorrhages; posterior uveitis; optic neuritis; and maculopathies, haemorrhage, and oedema. However anterior ischemic optic neuropathy is a rare presentation. Optic nerve ischemia most frequently occurs at the optic nerve head, where structural crowding of nerve fibers and reduction of the vascular supply may combine to impair perfusion to a critical degree and produce optic disc oedema.
