Innovative Applications Enabled by the Versatile Structural Color of Cholesteric Liquid Crystals.

Cholesteric liquid crystals (CLCs) are famous for their ability to self-assemble into Bragg reflectors of visible light, yielding intense structural color with a single circular polarization, despite flowing like a liquid. This review focuses on a selection of entirely new opportunities to apply CLCs to solve problems with high societal and industrial relevance, as demonstrated in proof-of-concept experiments with a transition to commercial application underway, in contexts quite far from the more traditional applied role of CLCs as thermometers. We now see a renaissance of applied CLC researc

Application of a latent variable model for a multicenter study on early effects due to mercury exposure.

A latent variable model was applied to the results of an Italian multicenter nation-wide cross-sectional study to assess the earliest health effects due to mercury (Hg) exposure caused by occupation, dental amalgams (DENTAM) and fish eating (FISH). The studied population included subjects recruited from four different geographical areas. A total number of 122 workers from chloroalkali plants and production of thermometers and neon lamps formed the occupationally exposed group, whereas 196 subjects, recruited from the same areas and not occupationally exposed to mercury, formed the control grou

Urinary bladder/pulmonary artery temperature ratio of less than 1 and shivering in cardiac surgical patients.

BACKGROUND: Temperature gradients that normally exist between body areas may be altered as a result of heat generated by shivering. METHODS AND POPULATION: Two core thermal gradients between pulmonary artery and urinary bladder were compared with shivering in 37 coronary artery bypass graft patients. Pulmonary artery and urinary temperature were measured every 15 minutes, and shivering was evaluated electromyographically. RESULTS: Shivering developed in 28 patients (76%). With shivering the pulmonary artery/urinary bladder temperature ratio was less than 1 but in the nonshivering group was g

UHR as a systemic sensor of cumulative heat exposure and subclinical cardiovascular injury: evidence from 64,088 adults.

BACKGROUND: The increasing frequency and intensity of heatwaves threaten global cardiovascular (CV) health. While the link between acute heatwaves and clinical CV events is known, the effect of cumulative heat exposure on early, subclinical CV injury is poorly understood. We investigated the dose-response relation between sustained thermal burden and subclinical CV damage and identified the main metabolic-inflammatory pathways involved. METHODS: In this large-scale, population-based retrospective cross-sectional study of 64,088 adults from Sichuan, China, we quantified cumulative heat exposur
