Social Perception of Facial Feminization Surgery Outcomes: Does Gender Identity Alter Gaze?

BACKGROUND: The evaluation of gender-affirming facial feminization surgery (FFS) outcomes can be highly subjective, which has resulted in a limited understanding of the social perception of favorable gender and aesthetic facial appearance following FFS. Eye-tracking technology has introduced an objective measure of viewer subconscious gaze. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to use eye-tracking technology to measure attention and perception of surgery-naive cisgender female and feminized transgender faces, based on viewer gender identity. METHODS: Thirty-two participants (18 cisgender and

Audiovisual integration of faces and voices in Chinese individuals with social anxiety.

In our daily lives, we perceive the emotions of others usually through a variety of modalities such as faces, voices, gestures, etc. However, very few studies have investigated the multisensory integration of emotional information. In the current study, we aimed to explored the audiovisual integration of faces and voices in individuals with social anxiety. In Experiment 1, individuals with social anxiety disorder (SAD) and healthy controls (HCs) participated in an emotion categorisation task using static angry and happy faces and voices. The results showed that for angry emotion, compared to a

Understanding cancer caregiver burden over time: Dyadic assessments of family cohesion, conflict and communication.

ObjectivePreviously we identified three distinct cancer communication concordance groups among cancer patient-caregiver dyads. This secondary analysis examined patient and caregiver reports of family functioning (cohesion and conflict) as associated with cancer communication concordance and assessed each as independent predictors of perceived caregiver burden among hematological cancer caregivers.MethodsA case series of hematological cancer patient-caregiver dyads (n = 171) were recruited from oncology clinics in Virginia and Pennsylvania and followed for 2 years. Using the previously identifi

Necker cube: stimulus-related (low-level) and percept-related (high-level) EEG signatures early in occipital cortex.

During observation of an ambiguous Necker cube, our percept changes spontaneously although the external stimulus does not. An EEG paradigm allowing time-resolved EEG measurement during endogenous perceptual reversals recently revealed a chain of ERP correlates beginning with an early occipital positivity at around 130 ms (Reversal Positivity, "RP"). In order to better understand the functional role of this RP, we investigated its relation to the P100, which is spatiotemporally close, typically occurring 100 ms after onset of a visual stimulus at occipital electrodes. We compared the relation o

Optimistic Bias and Personality Factors in Adherence to Oral Anticancer Treatments in Metastatic Breast Cancer: A Retrospective Analysis of Data From a Randomized Controlled Trial.

IntroductionPatients with cancer may overestimate their ability to adhere to oral anticancer treatments (OAT) which may significantly reduce adherence rates. However, only few studies have investigated the specific role of personality traits and cognitive distortions in the definition of the adherence trajectory in the cancer field.MethodsThis study is nested in the Pfizer project (65080791), and it is a secondary, observational analysis of prospectively collected data from a randomized controlled trial (RCT). To avoid potential bias from comparing measurements across different time points, we

Gender differences in trunk appearance perception and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in the patients with moderate adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) undergoing orthotic treatment: An observational study.

BACKGROUND: Orthotic treatment is commonly used as a non-surgical intervention for managing moderate adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). Although prior studies have evaluated various factors influencing health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in the patients with AIS, the association between trunk appearance perception and HRQoL, including potential gender differences, remains insufficiently defined. This study investigated gender differences in trunk appearance perception and its relationship with QoL among the patients with moderate AIS undergoing orthotic treatment. METHODS: Patients wit

Illness representations in patients with hand injury.

PURPOSE: Differences in illness perception about hand injury may partly explain the variation in health behaviours such as adherence to post-operative therapy, coping strategy, emotional response and eventual clinical outcome. This study examined the illness perception of patients with hand injuries in the acute trauma setting. METHODS: The disability and severity of injury were assessed using the Disability of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH) questionnaire and the Hand Injury Severity Score (HISS). The revised Illness Perception Questionnaire (IPQ-R) was used to explore patients' illness be

[The initial symptoms of Alzheimer disease: caregiver perception].

INTRODUCTION: Early recognition of Alzheimer's disease (AD) symptoms is crucial to the integration of patient and caregiver in the healthcare system. Family perception of initial cognitive and behavioural symptoms is decisive and has impact on quality of life of both patient and family. OBJECTIVES: To analyse caregiver's perception of initial AD symptoms and characterize the degree of cognitive decline that determines disease recognition. PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS: A semi-structured interview was performed including questions about: i) socio-economic characterization of patient and caregiver;

Maintenance of bound or independent features in visual working memory is task-dependent.

Conflicting findings exist regarding whether features of an object are stored separately or bound together in visual working memory. This controversy is based on an implicit assumption about a default, or fixed, mode of working memory storage. We investigated whether the anticipated task might determine the format in which information is maintained in working memory, consistent with its task-oriented function. To test this flexible maintenance hypothesis, we recorded the EEG while participants performed a change detection task with different requirements and loads. Across three experiments, we

Hypnosis reduces decoding accuracy of visual and auditory representations.

This study used event-related potentials (ERPs), time-frequency analysis, and multivariate pattern analysis (MVPA) to investigate how hypnosis modulates visual and auditory processing. Twenty-two highly hypnotizable participants performed an independent oddball task. Under the hypnotic suggestion of "seeing without perceiving, hearing without listening," behavioral results showed that hypnosis reduced target detection accuracy and prolonged reaction times in both modalities, while false alarm rates remained low. ERP analysis revealed no significant difference in the N100 component between hypn

Reassessing the Benefits of Audiovisual Integration to Speech Perception and Intelligibility.

PURPOSE: In difficult listening conditions, the visual system assists with speech perception through lipreading. Stimulus onset asynchrony (SOA) is used to investigate the interaction between the two modalities in speech perception. Previous estimates of audiovisual benefit and SOA integration period differ widely. A limitation of previous research is a lack of consideration of visemes-categories of phonemes defined by similar lip movements when produced by a speaker-to ensure that selected phonemes are visually distinct. This study aimed to reassess the benefits of audiovisual lipreading to s

The effect of spatial distance on numerical distance processing.

The close relationship between numerical and spatial representation has been widely studied. However, little is known regarding the influence of spatial distance on the processing of numerical distance. The purpose of this study was to examine this relationship by employing a modified numerical Stroop task, in which the spatial distance was either congruent or incongruent with the numerical distance. That is, numerical and spatial distances were either compatible with each other or incompatible. Experiment 1 demonstrated that when participants were directly requested to assess the numerical di

Impaired processing of spatiotemporal visual attention engagement deficits in Chinese children with developmental dyslexia.

Emerging evidence suggests that visuospatial attention plays an important role in reading among Chinese children with dyslexia. Additionally, numerous studies have shown that Chinese children with dyslexia have deficits in their visuospatial attention orienting; however, the visual attention engagement deficits in Chinese children with dyslexia remain unclear. Therefore, we used a visual attention masking (AM) paradigm to characterize the spatiotemporal distribution of visual attention engagement in Chinese children with dyslexia. AM refers to impaired identification of the first (S1) of two r

Degraded cortical temporal processing in the valproic acid-induced rat model of autism.

Hearing disorders, such as abnormal speech perception, are frequently reported in individuals with autism. However, the mechanisms underlying these auditory-associated signature deficits in autism remain largely unknown. In this study, we documented significant behavioral impairments in the sound temporal rate discrimination task for rats prenatally exposed to valproic acid (VPA), a well-validated animal model for studying the pathology of autism. In parallel, there was a large-scale degradation in temporal information-processing in their primary auditory cortices (A1) at both levels of spikin

Influence of acute pain on valence rating of words.

Numerous studies showed the effect of negative affective and pain-related semantic primes enhancing the perceived intensity of successive painful stimuli. It remains unclear whether and how painful primes are able to influence semantic stimuli in a similar way. Therefore, we investigated the effects of noxious primes on the perception of the valence of subsequent semantic stimuli. In two experiments, 48 healthy subjects were asked to give their valence ratings regarding different semantic stimuli (pain-related, negative, positive, and neutral adjectives) after they were primed with noxious ele

Investigating the effects of transcranial alternating current stimulation on primary somatosensory cortex.

Near-threshold tactile stimuli perception and somatosensory temporal discrimination threshold (STDT) are encoded in the primary somatosensory cortex (S1) and largely depend on alpha and beta S1 rhythm. Transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) is a non-invasive neurophysiological technique that allows cortical rhythm modulation. We investigated the effects of tACS delivered over S1 at alpha, beta, and gamma frequencies on near-threshold tactile stimuli perception and STDT, as well as phase-dependent tACS effects on near-threshold tactile stimuli perception in healthy subjects. In sep

Does the Somatosensory Temporal Discrimination Threshold Change over Time in Focal Dystonia?

BACKGROUND: The somatosensory temporal discrimination threshold (STDT) is defined as the shortest interval at which an individual recognizes two stimuli as asynchronous. Some evidence suggests that STDT depends on cortical inhibitory interneurons in the basal ganglia and in primary somatosensory cortex. Several studies have reported that the STDT in patients with dystonia is abnormal. No longitudinal studies have yet investigated whether STDT values in different forms of focal dystonia change during the course of the disease. METHODS: We designed a follow-up study on 25 patients with dystonia
