Choristoma is defined as a histologically normal tissue proliferation or nodule of a tissue type not normally found in anatomic site of proliferation. Here a case of chronic tonsillitis is being reported where mature cartilage was found embedded in the tonsil, making the surgical removal of the tonsil difficult. Cartilaginous choristoma of the tonsil appears to be a developmental anomaly in the second pharyngeal arch and could be one of the causes of recurrent tonsillitis.

Here authors present a rare case of actinomycosis of the pallatinal tonsilla, which had a form of tumor. Bacteriological tests revealed only some saprophytical bacteria in pharynx. After surgical treatment of disease was done, patient got back to health quickly, and histopathological exam showed that this was actinomycosis.

Adenoids and tonsils electively removed from 25 children with a history of recurrent group A beta-hemolytic streptococci (GABHS) adenotonsillitis were cultured for aerobic and anaerobic bacteria. Two hundred twenty-four organisms (112 aerobes and facultatives, 110 anaerobes, and 2 Candida albicans) were isolated from the tonsils, and 229 (111 aerobes and facultatives and 118 anaerobes) were isolated from the adenoids. Pharyngeal tuberculosis is very rare and normally appears as an seemingly malignant process. As a result of which it is essential to perform a differential diagnosis before beginning anticancer treatment. We present a clinical case of lingual tonsil tuberculosis. A review is made of the pathogenic mechanisms, the clinical manifestations and the diagnosis of pharyngeal tuberculosis, whose response to treatment with antituberculous drugs proves to be excellent.

Distant metastases from carcinoma of the palatine tonsil are very uncommon. We encountered a case of a carcinoma involving the tonsillar region that resulted in subarachnoid mestastases following local radical radiotherapy. Metastases were diagnosed following magnetic resonance imaging and spinal fluid cytology. The patient succumbed to the disease after a rapid downhill course, 1 month following diagnosis of the secondary deposit. The present paper describes the rare site of distant metastasis and reviews the relevant literature.

We investigated cytokine mRNA expression in human palatine tonsils from 20 patients. Expression of TNF-alpha mRNA was detected in 11 of 20 patients. IL- 1 alpha mRNA was detected in 2 patients and IL-2 mRNA in one patient. No expression of IL-4, IL-6 and interferon-gamma was detected in any of the 20 patients. TNF-alpha may play an important role in tonsillar diseases.

A case of actinomycosis of the tonsils with a neoplasm-like clinical presentation is presented. Tonsillectomy confirmed the diagnosis and the patient's evolution was favorable after postoperative antibiotic therapy. The scant literature on cervicofacial actinomycosis is reviewed. These processes often are confused with neoplasms, as in our case, or with mandibular osteomyelitis. Treatment is surgery and prolonged antibiotic administration. Actinomycosis should be considered in the differential diagnosis of cervicofacial masses, particularly when the biopsy is negative for carcinoma.

Carbon dioxide laser surgery was performed on children aged 5 to 11 years, on whom either adenoidectomy or tonsilloadenoidectomy had been performed to restore their hearing. We examined 177 ears 18 to 24 months after surgery. Thirty ears (17%) were diagnosed as having otitis media with effusion. Investigations of 16 archive autopsy observations of diphtheria of the fauces confirmed bacteriologically revealed that Corynebacteria diphtheriae multiplied mainly on the surface of the mucous membrane.
