BACKGROUND: Spinal cord compression can be due to various causes but spinal intramedullary tuberculoma is a rare cause. We report a case that had an intramedullary spinal cord tuberculomas in which the diagnosis was made histologically, without evidence of symptoms of systemic tuberculosis. This lesion, located in the thoracic region, mimicked as an intramedullary tumor radiologically.
CASE DESCRIPTION: The patient was a 25-year-old male who presented with a history of progressive paraparesis. Initial diagnosis was made as an intramedullary tumor by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The treat

Extrapulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB) is an important public health problem due to its diverse clinical presentations, diagnostic complexities, and significant impact on patient outcomes and public health. Our study aimed to understand the sociodemographic, clinical, and laboratory characteristics as well as diagnostic and treatment modalities of adult patients with EPTB. This is a multicentric retrospective study that covers patients with EPTB cases followed up from January 2015 to December 2022 among tuberculosis (TB) dispensaries and Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology clinics of 15

OBJECTIVE: Osteoarticular tuberculosis (OATB) is one of the most common forms of extrapulmonary tuberculosis; however, limited epidemiological data are available on this public health concern worldwide, especially in developing countries. This study aimed to analyze the clinical epidemiology and drug resistance characteristics of OATB cases in Hunan province which located in South-central China.
METHODS: We retrospectively enrolled OATB patients with Mycobacterium tuberculosis culture positive at Hunan Chest Hospital from January 2013 through March 31, 2022. The multiple demographic, clinical

Prevention or correction of severe kyphotic deformity in addition to eradication of the infective focus has become the modern standard of management of tuberculosis of the spine. Circumferential excision of the kyphus is now technically feasible with the development of rigid pedicle screw fixation system and intraoperative spinal cord monitoring in the past two decades.

A 19-year-old girl presented with acute cord compression following treatment for tuberculous meningitis. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a posterior compressive lesion between T1 and T4. At laminectomy, an intradural extramedullary tuberculous granuloma was excised. To our knowledge, this is the first report of spinal cord compression occurring from a subdural tuberculous mass.

A case of meningoencephalic tuberculosis in a 38-year old man is presented. The diagnosis was confirmed by postmortem and histological examinations. The clinical picture was dominated by transverse lesion of the spinal cord at C3-C7 level that was due to specific inflammation of blood-vessel walls and massive thromboses found in their lumina.

Intramedullary tuberculoma is rare, and there has been no report of concurrent intramedullary and intracerebral tuberculomas. We report a 30-year-old man with miliary tuberculosis of the lung. He suffered sudden paraplegia due to tuberculomas in the thoracic spinal cord and MRI showed more tuberculomas in the cervical spinal cord, brain stem, and cerebral and cerebellar hemispheres. The tuberculomas were isointense on the T1-weighted images, and hyperintense on the T2-weighted images; there was marked enhancement with intravenous gadolinium-DTPA. All the tuberculomas were very small 1 year aft

STUDY DESIGN: A multicenter retrospective study.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to propose a novel classification for single-segment thoracolumbar tuberculosis (TLTB) and test its reliability for clinical application.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: The classifications of spinal tuberculosis reported by studies exhibit certain limitations with low utilization.
METHODS: The proposed classification included 3 types of single-segment TLTB based on lesion extent, vertebral and/or intervertebral disc height loss, sagittal index, spinal instability, and neurological deficit: type I, involves an intervert

INTRODUCTION: Mycobacterium tuberculosis infections remain a significant cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Extrapulmonary infections are less common, and skeletal tuberculosis accounts for about 5-20% of all cases. Skeletal tuberculosis cases often pose diagnostic challenges due to its insidious onset, non-specific clinical presentation and radiographic findings similar to other diseases. Multifocal skeletal tuberculosis is an extremely rare clinical entity, and is defined as an infection that affects two or more non-contiguous bony structures. This clinical entity can mimic bony met

BACKGROUND: Central nervous system (CNS) Tuberculosis (TB) meningitis is a progressive disease that can present in many forms. CNS TB is encountered frequently in areas of high prevalence of tuberculosis and dissemination is common, but TB meningitis is a disease that has a relatively low prevalence in North America.

The study deals with the development of new diagnostic and therapeutical methods for deep spinal marrow diseases in spinal tuberculosis and its sequelae. The human spinal marrow has been first electroneurophysiologically studied during compression of the spine and ofter its anterolateral decompression. A comprehensive diagnostic technique--computed electrospinoneurography has been proposed; objective criteria for prediction and evaluation of therapeutical efficiency have been defined. The proposed epidural electrostimulation following a surgery for anterolateral decompression of the spine acce

Skeletal tuberculosis is an uncommon form of extrapulmonary tuberculosis that may involve multiple osseous sites and occasionally mimic malignant disease, creating a significant diagnostic challenge. We report the case of a 70-year-old male who presented with an eight-month history of progressive thoracolumbar pain, constitutional symptoms, and subsequent development of paraplegia and urinary retention. Computed tomography revealed multifocal osteolytic lesions involving the sternum, thoracic and lumbar vertebrae, and iliac bones, initially raising concern for metastatic malignancy. Magnetic r

A 24-year-old immunocompetent woman underwent whole-body 18F-FDG PET/CT for the evaluation of MRI-suspicious tuberculous spinal lesions. The PET/CT results showed no pathological uptake in either lung, and there were no pathological changes on CT. There was increased uptake in the right psoas muscle, extending continuously down anterior to the right hip joint, posterior to and around the trochanteric region of the right femur, and into the right thigh, with an SUVmaxbw of 17.0. Subsequently, the patient underwent CT-guided biopsy as per protocol, which revealed drug-sensitive Mycobacterium tub

We describe a case of a 30-year-old woman who presented with a complaint of coughing while drinking water, which began 2 months earlier and was treated with surgical repair of esophageal and tracheal fistulization that resulted from a Pott's abscess. The patient had been diagnosed with pulmonary tuberculosis 4 years previously and had been treated for 6 months. Esophageal and tracheal fistulization of the abscess cavity was observed both radiologically and intraoperatively. The fistulas were closed through separate operations for the trachea and the esophagus. Simultaneous esophageal and trach

Pregnancy with quadriplegia is a problem sometimes encountered in obstetric practice. The etiology of quadriplegia in the developed world is mainly spinal cord tumor or accident, while in the developing countries the main cause is tuberculosis of the spine. We report the management of two pregnant patients with quadriplegia due to tuberculosis of the cervical spine. Worsening of the neurological condition necessitated early surgical intervention, and termination of pregnancy was advised in both patients. Literature on the subject makes frequent reference to the life-threatening complication of
