The diagnosis of some cases of neonatal jaundice is complicated because of inability to identify the gallbladder, which makes it very difficult to differentiate biliary atresia from neonatal hepatitis even by serial ultrasonic (US) examination. Serial (US) examination after the administration of phenobarbital as a cholagogue at a dosage of 5 mg/kg/day for 5 days was performed to evaluate nine patients with neonatal jaundice. Ultrasound registration of changes in gallbladder volume by the method of cylinder sum allows reliable means of studying gallbladder contractility in response to pharmacological load. Cerucal increased this activity in chronics with gastroduodenitis and diabetes mellitus, pentagastrin reduced the gallbladder volume. In duodenal ulcer patients a single dose of dalargin dilated the gallbladder for a short time, while in course treatment did not influence it. Gastrocepin inhibited motor activity of gallbladder as well as corinfar.

Ultrasonically guided percutaneous ethanol injection to all of four enlarged parathyroid glands, which were confirmed by fine-needle aspiration biopsy, was successfully performed in a hemodialysis patient with secondary hyperparathyroidism. In an interesting experiment of nature, we observed the discordant onset of fetal cardiac activity between the two gestations of a heterotopic pregnancy. After initially detecting cardiac activity only in the tubal gestational sac, we later observed cardiac activity in the intrauterine sac 6 days after laparoscopic salpingectomy. This case illustrates the variable onset of cardiac activity. We advise expectant management of the intrauterine pregnancy in a heterotopic gestation when cardiac activity is not detected initially in the intrauterine sac.

Ultrasonically guided fine-needle biopsies were performed from 28 adrenal lesions in 28 patients. In 15 patients adrenal enlargement was an incidental finding. The Cavitron Ultrasonic Surgical Aspirator was used to reduce the volume of diaphragmatic metastases in 33 patients. Thirty patients had epithelial carcinoma of the ovary and one each had tubal adenocarcinoma, papillary peritoneal tumor, and mesothelioma. The structures in the posterior cranial fossa of neonates and infants were visualized ultrasonically via the anterior fontanelle. The diameters of the cerebellar vermis, pons, fourth ventricle and cisterna vermis were measured in the midsagittal plane in neonates (n = 76), 1-month-old infants (n = 61) and 3- to 6-month-old infants (n = 35). The normal values obtained will be useful for evaluation of morphological abnormalities in the posterior cranial fossa.

We report 118 foetal karyotypes studied on the basis of ultrasonographic warning signs which appeared in pregnancies with no significant risk of chromosomal abnormalities, judging from the personal and familial histories. The ultrasonographic diagnosis of intussusception may be a recent complementation of X-ray fluoroscopy controlled hydrostatic desinvagination. Ultrasound is also useful in follow-up of the effectiveness of conservative management. By presenting their experience gathered by successful treatment of one case, the authors' aim is to contribute to the spread of this method.

This study was aimed at evaluating US reliability and sensitivity in identifying inflammatory or neoplastic bowel diseases in symptomatic patients. Two hundred and fifty patients who had been referred to our Unit for double-contrast barium enema of small bowel and colon, underwent panoramic and targeted abdominal US. This paper introduces a new application: debridement of vulvovaginal necrotic ulcers resulting from intracavitary radiation therapy. The authors report a case of conjoined twins (dicephalus) detected antenataly in the 18-th week of pregnancy by routine ultrasound screening. The pregnancy was terminated because this congenital malformatión is incompatible with extrauterin life. The embriopathological examination confirmed the prenatal diagnosis. The ultrasonographic criteria are discussed and the importance of early diagnosis is stressed.
