A prospective study was carried out in order to assess nosocomial bacteremia in the Intensive Care Unit of the Centrohabana Teaching Pediatric Hospital, from January to May 1988. 66.7% of the bacteremia episodes diagnosed were of a nosocomial origin, mostly secondary. Nosocomial bacteremia rate was 15.5 per 100 admissions, with predominance in the age group under 1 year of age. PURPOSE: We describe a new method of using a Foley catheter to assist vesicourethral anastomosis during radical retropubic prostatectomy.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 81 patients underwent radical retropubic prostatectomy with this technique. Followup ranged from 4 to 48 months. Peri-catheter urethrograms were performed at 3 weeks. Patients were evaluated specifically for bladder neck contracture, urinary continence and prolonged catheterization.

A continent ileocecal reservoir was created as an alternative to ileal loop urinary diversion in 7 patients. In 3 patients the bladder neck was closed, the in situ bladder was augmented and a continent stoma was formed by intussusception of the ileocecal valve. In the remaining 4 patients an isolated cecal reservoir with a continent stoma replaced the bladder. We report a rare complication of knotting of the urethral catheter inside the urinary bladder of a 3 month old boy who was referred for voiding cystourethrogram. After unsuccessful attempts to remove the catheter, the baby was admitted to surgery. The catheter was removed under anesthesia after gentle but sustained traction. The complications of improper urethral catheterization are described and recommendations are made for their prevention.
