A 26-year-old Chinese male patient with type I glycogen storage disease presented with chronic renal disease, proteinuria, and urolithiasis. On renal biopsy, focal glomerular sclerosis, increased mesangial matrix and cellularity, interstitial fibrosis, tubular atrophy, and prominent arteriosclerosis were observed. Immunofluorescence microscopy revealed Ig A deposits predominantly in the glomerular mesangium. The possible mechanisms of renal involvement in glycogen storage disease are briefly discussed.

To determine the potential need in medical technologies based on Novosibirsk regional clinical diagnostic center data, the social hygienic evaluation of the population pathology detection during medical consulting care was organized. It is established that the detection of diseases of thyroid gland, bronchial asthma, hypertension, urolithiasis, duodenal ulcer chronic hepatitis, hepatocirrhosis, and allergic rhinitis is the most important issue in the social hygienic evaluation of prevalence of pathologic affection.

Urinary tract calculi composed primarily of xanthine are rate both in adults and children. We describe the clinical presentation and management of a 3.5-year-old boy with hereditary xanthinuria (an autosomal recessive disorder of purine metabolism) and primary bladder calculus formed from xanthine. To our knowledge this case demonstrates a previously undescribed form of xanthinuria in childhood. Xanthine stones, although rare, should be considered in the diagnosis of urolithiasis.

A 34-year-old man with adult-onset Still's disease developed a striking hypercalcaemia during a rapidly destructive polyarthritis with extensive osteoporosis. The hypercalcaemia seemed to be primarily caused by inflammation-induced bone resorption. On prednisone the polyarthritis went into remission and the plasma calcium levels became normal. Other remarkable features in this case were a subluxation of the atlantoaxial joint, a brain-stem haemorrhage, transient hyperuricaemia and hyperuricosuria, and urolithiasis.

Effective treatment and prevention of urolithiasis depends on accurate determination of the chemical nature of the uroliths. A widely used qualitative chemical procedure was compared with quantitative crystallographic analysis of 272 canine uroliths. Agreement between the 2 methods was 78%.
