Success rate and proposed mechanism of balloon rupture in hemostasis with MYNX CONTROL.

OBJECTIVES: Real-world data regarding the efficacy and safety of the MYNX CONTROL vascular closure device (Cordis) remain limited. The autho … nfrequent but notable complication and occurred only in cases involving antegrade access and severe vascular calcification. Careful consideration of puncture direction and vascular calcification may further improve procedural safety when using MYNX CONTROL.

Radiographic diagnosis of meningioma of the lateral ventricle. Review of 22 cases.

Review of 22 cases of meningioma indicates that this lesion occurs slightly more frequently on the left but without predilection for sex or age of the patient. The presenting symptoms were nonspecific. Plain radiographs of the skull sometimes demonstrated calcification in the tumor, but more often did not. Cerebral angiography frequently showed enlargement and displacement of the anterior choroidal artery on the side of the tumor; the lateral posterior choroidal artery on the side of the tumor was also enlarged and displaced in seven of nine patients who underwent vertebral arteriography. Pneu

The amount of calcifications in pseudoxanthoma elasticum patients is underestimated in computed tomographic imaging; a post-mortem correlation of histological and computed tomographic findings in two cases.

OBJECTIVES: Pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE) is a rare genetic disorder, characterised by elastic fibre degeneration and calcifications in mul … nd around the oesophagus. On CT imaging only the intradermal alterations of the skin and the larger vascular calcifications were detected. The smaller PXE-related abnormalities were not visible on CT. CONCLUSIONS: With CT imaging vascular calcifications and skin alterations can be monitored in PXE patients. However, many of the subtle PXE-related abnormalities found in …

Congenital multiple cavernous angiomas associated with thrombosed arteriovenous malformation of the brain--case report.

A 16-year-old girl presented with multiple cerebral cavernous angiomas with calcifications due to repeated hemorrhages and a thrombosed cerebral arteriovenous malformation (AVM). Her 18-year-old elder sister also had multiple cerebral cavernous angiomas associated with calcifications, which suggested presence of repeated previous hemorrhages. Surgical removal via a right occipital craniotomy resulted in a good outcome. The histological diagnosis was thrombosed AVM. Evaluation of congenital vascular anomaly needs to take into consideration the combination of other congenital vascular anomalies

A Rare Case of Chest Wall Castleman's Disease with Calcification.

Castleman's disease with calcification of the chest wall is very rare, and there have been few reports of such cases to date. A 57-year-old woman was referred to our hospital for a tumor with calcification on her left lateral chest wall, which was detected on chest computed tomography. Findings of her chest magnetic resonance imaging suggested schwannoma or a solitary fibrous tumor, and therefore, we performed surgery for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. Pathologically, the tumor with calcification was diagnosed as Castleman's disease of the hyaline-vascular type. After the surgery, the pa

Nephrogenic calcific arteriopathy.

Vascular calcification in chronic kidney disease (CKD) is extremely common and contributes to significant morbidity and mortality among these patients. The pathogenesis is complex and involves multiple factors, including elevated calcium x phosphorus product as well as deficiencies in circulating or locally produced inhibitors of calcification, parathyroid hormone, hyperlipidemia and inflammation. Similarly, valvular heart calcifications as well as myocardial and pulmonary calcifications of fatal consequences can also occur, presumably related to the same pathogenetic factors (Figures 1, 2). O…

Paracrine Signals in Calcified Conditioned Media Elicited Differential Responses in Primary Aortic Vascular Smooth Muscle Cells and in Adventitial Fibroblasts.

Our goal was to determine if paracrine signals from different aortic layers can impact other cell types in the diabetic microenvironment, specifically medial vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) and adventitial fibroblasts (AFBs). The diabetic hyperglycemic aorta undergoes mineral dysregulation, causing cells to be more responsive to chemical messengers eliciting vascular calcification. Advanced glycation end-products (AGEs)/AGE receptors (RAGEs) signaling has been implicated in diabetes-mediated vascular calcification. To elucidate responses shared between cell types, pre-conditioned calcifie…

Clinical consequences and novel therapy of hyperphosphatemia: Lanthanum carbonate for dialysis patients.

Vascular calcification is a very common event in patients affected by diabetes and chronic kidney disease (CKD). Recently, it has been well documented that abnormalities in mineral and bone metabolism in CKD patients associate with increased morbidity and mortality. Elevated serum phosphate and calcium-phosphate product levels play an important role in the pathogenesis of vascular mineralization in uremic patients and also appear to be associated with increased cardiovascular mortality. Together with classical passive precipitation of calcium-phosphate in soft tissues, during the last decade i…

A Peculiar Finding on the Ventrolateral Surface of the Tongue.

Phleboliths are reported as calcifications that occur in vascular malformations, associated with changes in blood flow dynamics, thrombus formation and subsequent calcifications. Radiological examination, such as cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) could help in demonstrating the presence of a calcifiied mass. A 45-year-old male was referred to our service with an asymptomatic nodular purplish lesion located on the ventrolateral tongue. Within the lesion, a stony mass was also evident on palpation. A digital dental radiograph demonstrated two circumscribed radiopaque structures. Phleboliths a

Evaluation of vitamin K status and rationale for vitamin K supplementation in dialysis patients.

The cardinal biological role of vitamin K is to act as cofactor for the carboxylation of a number of vitamin K-dependent proteins, some of which are essential for coagulation, bone formation and prevention of vascular calcification. Functional vitamin K deficiency is common and severe among dialysis patients and has garnered attention as a modifiable risk factor in this population. However, no single biochemical parameter can adequately assess vitamin K status. For each biological function of vitamin K, the degree of carboxylation of the relevant vitamin K-dependent protein most accurately ref…

Potential Correlation Between Circulating Fetuin-A and Pentraxin-3 With Biochemical Parameters of Calcification in Hemodialysis Patients.

BACKGROUND: The strong correlation between vascular calcification and cardiovascular risk, which is a major cause of mortality in hemodialysis (HD) patients, has been well established. Fetuin-A is an inhibitor of vascular calcification, and pentraxin 3 (PTX3) is produced at the site of inflammation, which is associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD). The main purpose of this study was evaluating the correlation between fetuin-A and PTX3 with some biochemical parameters effective upon vascular calcification in HD patients. METHODS: We included 84 HD patients and 84 healthy controls matched …

The Impact of Targeted Therapies on the Bone-Vascular Axis in Psoriasis: A Narrative Review.

This narrative review elucidates the impact of biologics and small-molecule inhibitors on bone metabolism and cardiovascular risk in patients with psoriasis. Psoriasis is a systemic immune-mediated disorder characterized by a "Calcification Paradox"-the simultaneous occurrence of skeletal bone loss and vascular calcification. We explore the molecular mechanisms of the "Bone-Vascular Axis", highlighting how the IL-23/IL-17 axis disrupts the RANKL/OPG balance and drives the osteogenic transdifferentiation of vascular smooth muscle cells. We critically evaluate the therapeutic impact of targeted …

Calciphylaxis in a patient affected by rheumatoid arthritis, chronic renal failure, and hyperparathyroidism: a case report.

Calciphylaxis, or calcific uremic arteriolopathy, is the tissue and vascular calcification that occurs mainly in chronic kidney disease. However, it can be secondary to parathyroid dysfunction and it has been described in rheumatic patients. We present a case of calciphylaxis in a woman with inactive rheumatoid arthritis, acute renal failure, and hyperparathyroidism.

Association of bone mineral density and trabecular bone score with cardiovascular disease.

Traditionally, osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease (CVD) are considered as separate chronic diseases. Increasing evidence now links osteoporosis with hypertension, abnormal lipid metabolism, atherosclerosis, vascular calcification (VC), and congestive heart failure. VC coexists with bone loss, and aortic calcification is a strong predictor of low bone mineral density (BMD) and fragility fractures. The same holds true for coronary artery calcification (CAC): the lower the BMD, the higher the CAC. Trabecular bone score (TBS) iNsight software can analyze the existing BMD database to obtain th…

[Clinical relevance of coronary artery calcification, as a risk factor for plaque rupture: viewpoint from pathology].

Atherosclerotic calcification is usually associated with long - standing atherosclerosis. There is accumulating evidence that both apoptosis and osteogenic differentiation of vascular smooth muscle cells contribute to arterial calcification. Our long experience of cardiovascular pathology over many years revealed that ruptured plaques were closely associated with areas of small calcium deposits. To further clarify the association between patterns of coronary arterial calcification and morphology of atherosclerotic plaques, we studied preinterventional intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) images at

Captopril Attenuates the Upregulated Connexin 43 Expression in Artery Calcification.

OBJECTIVE: Vascular calcification is commonly observed in atherosclerosis and diabetes. The renin-angiotensin II system is associated with the regulation of arterial stiffening. The aim of this study was to examine whether the angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors captopril attenuates artery calcification. METHODS: The rat model of arterial calcification was established by a combination of warfarin and vitamin K1. Two weeks after the induction of arterial calcification, captopril treatment was initiated. One week after captopril treatment, aortic arteries were examined to determine the cal…
