Stop Laryngeal Distinctions Driven by Contrastive Effects of Neighboring Tones.

This study examined contrastive effects of neighboring tones that give rise to a systematic asymmetry in stop perception. Korean-speaking learners of Mandarin Chinese and naïve listeners labeled voiceless unaspirated stops preceded or followed by low or high extrinsic tonal context (e.g., maLO.pa vs. maHI.pa) either as lenis (associated with a low F0 at the vowel onset) or as fortis stops (with a high F0). Further, the target tone itself varied between level and rising (e.g., maLO.paLEV vs. maLO.paRIS). Both groups of listeners showed significant contrastive effects of extrinsic context. Speci

Retrieval Practice and Word Learning in Children With Specific Language Impairment and Their Typically Developing Peers.

Purpose In this article, we review the role of retrieval practice on the word learning and retention of children with specific language impairment (SLI). Method Following a brief review of earlier findings on word learning in children with SLI and the assumptions behind retrieval practice, four experiments are described that compared novel words learned in a repeated spaced retrieval condition and those learned in either a repeated study condition or a repeated immediate retrieval condition. Preschool-age children with SLI and their same-age peers with typical language development were the par

Posterior hippocampal stroke presenting with transient global amnesia.

The acute onset of isolated amnesia is an intriguing challenge for neurologist, because the lack of associated signs can be misleading for diagnosis. The most common cause is transient global amnesia (TGA), a benign condition, but rarely it results from abuse of substance/alcohol or cerebrovascular diseases. In the latter, the brain region involved is the hippocampus. We describe a patient with presenting symptoms of TGA, but affected by an ischemic hippocampal stroke. The computed tomography angiography helped the etiologic diagnosis showing an hemodynamic stenosis of the posterior P2P segmen

Effect Size for Single-Subject Design in Phonological Treatment.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to document, validate, and corroborate effect size (ES) for single-subject design in treatment of children with functional phonological disorders; to evaluate potential child-specific contributing variables relative to ES; and to establish benchmarks for interpretation of ES for the population. METHOD: Data were extracted from the Developmental Phonologies Archive for 135 preschool children with phonological disorders who previously participated in single-subject experimental treatment studies. Standard mean difference(all with correction for continuity)

Forgetting as an active process: an FMRI investigation of item-method-directed forgetting.

Using event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), we examined the blood oxygen level-dependent response associated with intentional remembering and forgetting. In an item-method directed forgetting paradigm, participants were presented with words, one at a time, each of which was followed after a brief delay by an instruction to Remember or Forget. Behavioral data revealed a directed forgetting effect: greater recognition of to-be-remembered than to-be-forgotten words. We used this behavioral recognition data to sort the fMRI data into 4 conditions based on the combination of m

Working with linguistically diverse families in early intervention: misconceptions and missed opportunities.

Traditionally, speech-language pathologists (SLPs) and other professionals have held the belief that children with speech and language disabilities are unable to successfully learn more than one language. It is often automatically assumed that exposing young children to two languages will cause confusion and significant delays in the learning of any language. Because of this belief, many families have been influenced to give up their home language in their efforts to ensure their child's successful learning of English. Yet it has been documented that children who are learning two languages sim

The picture exchange communication system.

The Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) was developed as a means to teach children with autism and related developmental disabilities a rapidly acquired, self-initiating, functional communication system. Its theoretical roots combine principles from applied behavior analysis and guidelines established within the field of alternative and augmentative communication. This approach has several potential advantages relative to imitation-based strategies (both vocal and gestural) and symbol selection strategies. The system begins with the exchange of simple icons but rapidly builds "sentenc

When reading is "readn" or somthn. Distinctness of phonological representations of lexical items in normal and disabled readers.

This paper specifies nothing less than an underlying cause of dyslexia. It is a cause which may be responsible for lacking responsiveness to both the teaching of phoneme awareness and to initial reading instruction. Can a single phonological factor explain many of the phonological deficits related to dyslexia? In this paper it is suggested that the answer may be affirmative and that indistinct phonological representations of lexical items in long term memory may be such a unifying factor. Results are summarised from a correlational study of adults and from a longitudinal and intervention study

Effects of imitative and conversational recasting treatment on the acquisition of grammar in children with specific language impairment and younger language-normal children.

The purpose of the study was to compare the relative effectiveness of imitative treatment and conversational recast treatment in children with language impairment and in a group of children with normal language skills. Language treatment outcomes were compared between a group of older (4.7 to 6.7) specifically-language-impaired (SLI) children and a group of younger (2.2 to 4.2) language-normal (LN) children matched on language levels and on intervention targets. The results indicated: (a) Target acquisition was more rapid under conversational recast treatment for both groups: (b) This outcome

[Specific parent training in alalia. 1: Introduction and presentation of the seminar concept].

Developmental aphasia is the most severe form of speech retardation and needs therapeutic intervention. The young age of these children (< 3 years) makes therapy difficult. A specified speech therapy is not possible at this age. Intensive stimulation of verbal communication by the parents is necessary. Therefore we developed a specialized training program for parents. This preparation is very useful for later therapy and should prevent disturbance of interaction between parents and child. We will present our concept.

A comparison of 13-year-old boys with attention deficit and/or reading disorder on neuropsychological measures.

This study compared 13-year-old boys with attention deficit disorder (ADD) and/or reading disability (RD), and controls with neither disorder on a battery of verbal and nonverbal neuropsychological measures. The aim was to examine whether ADD was associated with a qualitatively distinct pattern of deficits compared with RD. None of the measures differentiated the boys with ADD-only from the controls; the only deficit associated with ADD was slightly lower IQ. RD, on the other hand, was associated with deficits in memory and verbal skills.

Schizophrenic subtypes and differential responsiveness to reward and punishment.

Variations in responsivity to primary, secondary asocial and interpersonal rewards and punishments between major schizophrenic subgroups were investigated in a probability learning study. The subgroups compared were process and reactive, paranoid and nonparanoid, long- and short-hospitalization, and long- and short-length of illness schizophrenics. No evidence of differential responsivity to these reward-punishment/modality combinations appeared between high and low scorers on any of the four schizophrenic subgrouping dimensions. The groups then were matched closely so that the effects of each

Can women correctly contract their pelvic floor muscles without formal instruction?

OBJECTIVES: It is unknown how many women presenting for primary care can appropriately contract their pelvic floor muscle (PFM) or whether this ability differs between women with or without pelvic floor disorders. We sought to describe the proportion of women who initially incorrectly contract the PFM and how many can learn after basic instruction. METHODS: This cross-sectional study enrolled 779 women presenting to community-based primary care practices. During PFM assessment, research nurses recorded whether women could correctly contract their PFM after a brief verbal cue. We defined pelvi

The amnestic syndrome of posterior cerebral artery infarction.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Little is known about the character and underlying lesions of ischaemic amnesia. Episodic memory functions and brain lesions were therefore studied in 84 patients with acute ischaemic infarcts in the supply territory of the posterior cerebral artery. The aim was also to learn how the neural memory systems are organized. METHODS: Standard neuropsychological tests were used to assess verbal and figural memory. Patients were split into memory-impaired and memory-intact groups. Lesions were demarcated, normalized and anatomically labelled, using standard mapping procedures

Behavioural analysis of an inherited speech and language disorder: comparison with acquired aphasia.

Genetic speech and language disorders provide the opportunity to investigate the biological bases of language and its development. Critical to these investigations are the definition of behavioural phenotypes and an understanding of their interaction with epigenetic factors. Here, we report our investigations of the KE family, half the members of which are affected by a severe disorder of speech and language, which is transmitted as an autosomal-dominant monogenic trait. The cognitive manifestations of this disorder were investigated using a number of linguistic and non-linguistic tests. The a
