Oxidative stress in experimental vitiligo C57BL/6 mice.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

AIM: To evaluate whether oxidative stress is implicated in melanocyte damage in vitiligo. BACKGROUND: Vitiligo is a complex disorder characterized by gradually enlarging areas of depigmentation. A new unifying hypothesis for the etiology of this pigment disorder is proposed, in which we postulate that the final destruction of melanocytes in vitiligo results from a cascade of reactions initiated by a disregulation of melanogenesis, as the result of a breakdown in free radical defense. METHODS: We evaluated 18 vitiligo mice and 12 controls that were age matched. Parameters of oxidative stress …

Keratoacanthoma in vitiligo lesion after UVB narrowband phototherapy.

The treatment of vitiligo is still a challenge. Among various therapeutic modalities, phototherapy with UVB narrowband (UVB-NB) is presently considered a treatment of choice for this skin disease. The exact skin cancer risk deriving from UVB-NB is a serious concern to be determined. We report a case of keratoacanthoma developed in the vitiligo area during a prolonged course of UVB-NB therapy.

Transfer of vitiligo after allogeneic bone marrow transplantation.

Adoptive transfer of donor immunity has been demonstrated in animals after bone marrow transplantation (BMT). In humans, several autoimmune diseases have been similarly transferred. Although BMT may, per se, be associated with a modulation of the recipient's immune system, which could trigger or even cause autoimmune diseases, both animal experiments and experience with humans show the likeliness of adoptive transfer of donor immunity to the recipient. We describe a patient with multiple myeloma in whom generalized vitiligo developed within 3 months after allogeneic BMT from his HLA-matched si…

Vitiligo-like leucoderma during photochemotherapy for mycosis fungoides.

We describe four patients with mycosis fungoides (MF) in whom depigmentation, and also leucotrichia in one, occurred following the resolutio … ave activated a cell-mediated immunity leading to destruction of the melanocytes. We recommend that vitiligo-like leucoderma be added to the list of untoward effects of phototherapy in MF.

Generalized vitiligo after lymphocyte infusion for relapsed leukaemia.

Vitiligo is an autoimmune disease caused by T-lymphocyte-mediated destruction of melanocytes. We describe two patients with generalized vitiligo caused iatrogenically after donor lymphocyte infusion (DLI) for leukaemia relapse over 3 years after bone marrow transplantation (BMT). Neither the sibling donor nor the recipient had vitiligo or other autoimmune diseases, and vitiligo did not occur after the first BMT. DLI was accompanied by skin graft-versus-host disease in both cases, which was controlled with immunosuppression. However, over several months, progressive generalized and persistent s…

Peripheral T-cell activation in non-segmental vitiligo.

Vitiligo is a hypopigmentary dermatosis of probable autoimmune origin. Previously reported aberrations in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC), especially T cells and T cell subsets, have been inconsistent. Lymphocyte subpopulations were examined using flow cytometry and monoclonal antibodies against CD4, CD8, CD20, CD25, CD45RA, and HLA-DR in 34 patients with non-segmental vitiligo. Twelve patients had not received any previous treatment and 22 had previously received at least one course of PUVA therapy that was discontinued at least four months prior to our study. Compared to matched co…

Oral photochemotherapy in vitiligo: follow-up, patient compliance.

BACKGROUND: Vitiligo is a common, acquired condition of unknown etiology. The only practical treatment for patients with vitiligo is psoralen ultraviolet A (PUVA). No satisfactory method is available to measure the influence of certain factors on the therapeutic response. METHODS: Twenty-nine patients with generalized vitiligo were studied for the effectives of PUVA therapy. The comparative study revealed the importance of certain variables (i.e., the proper dose of psoralen, the regular attendance of the patient, and the duration of the treatment). A scoring system had been designed and empl…

Primary ovarian failure, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, and vitiligo.

A female adolescent with primary ovarian failure was found to have circulating autoantibodies to her ovaries. Primary ovarian failure in pediatrics is usually attributed to gonadal dysgenesis. Autoimmune oophoritis is a rare cause and is most often associated with Addison's disease and other autoimmune endocrinopathies. Our patient also had juvenile rheumatoid arthritis and vitiligo. To our knowledge, this case represents the first reported instance of this particular constellation of autoimmune disorders.

Increased Expression of Long Noncoding RNA LOC100506314 in T cells from Patients with Nonsegmental Vitiligo and Its Contribution to Vitiligo Pathogenesis.

This study aimed to identify the abnormal expression of long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) in T cells from patients with vitiligo and to investigate their functional roles in the immune system. Using microarray analysis, the expression levels of RNA transcripts in T cells from patients with vitiligo and controls were compared. We identified several genes and validated their expression levels in T cells from 41 vitiligo patients and 41 controls. The biological functions of the lncRNAs were studied in a transfection study using an RNA pull-down assay, followed by proteomic analysis and western blotti…

Psychiatric morbidity, genetic susceptibility and the risk of vitiligo.

BACKGROUND: Vitiligo is a complex autoimmune skin disorder influenced by genetic susceptibility and environmental factors. Psychiatric morbidity has been proposed as a potential antecedent or correlate of vitiligo, but its prospective association with incident vitiligo remains unclear. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the prospective association between psychiatric morbidity and vitiligo and determine the extent to which this association is modified by genetic susceptibility, quantified by polygenic risk scores (PRS). METHODS: This study included 379,589 UK Biobank participants. Psychiatric morbid…

Halo Seborrheic Keratosis in a Patient of Color With Vitiligo.

A 73-year-old woman with Fitzpatrick skin type V presented with a long-standing brownish-black, three-tone macule on the right anterior thigh that developed a sharply demarcated depigmented halo. She also exhibited depigmented patches on the buttocks, hands, and feet consistent with vitiligo. Horizontal excision with histopathology confirmed seborrheic keratosis (SK) without atypia. This case highlights that the halo phenomenon can occur in non-melanocytic lesions, including SK,1 a presentation that may mimic melanoma and complicate diagnosis in richly pigmented skin.2,3 We review halo SK, dis…

Clinical Characteristics and Treatment Patterns in Patients With Vitiligo.

IMPORTANCE: Vitiligo is a chronic autoimmune disease characterized by loss of pigment in the skin, hair, or both, which can impact quality of life. OBJECTIVE: To describe the demographic and clinical characteristics of patients with vitiligo and to characterize vitiligo treatment patterns, by vitiligo extent and age. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This retrospective cohort study analyzed deidentified data from the linked Komodo Healthcare Map and OMNY Health Foundation databases. The linked databases capture health care and pharmacy claims and electronic health record data for patients w…

Vitiligo and the microbiome of the gut and skin: a systematic review.

Vitiligo is a chronic autoimmune skin condition characterized by depigmentation due to the destruction of melanocytes. Recent research has identified potential links between vitiligo and alterations in both the gut and skin microbiomes. This systematic review aims to explore these microbiome changes and their potential role in the onset and progression of vitiligo. A comprehensive search of the PubMed, Medline (OVID), and Web of Science databases was conducted to identify studies examining the gut and/or skin microbiota in vitiligo patients. A total of six studies were included in the qualitat…
