Reinnervation offers great potential for the rehabilitation of the paralyzed larynx, a potential that has yet to be realized. The nerve-muscle pedicle (NMP) technique is one method of reinnervation that attempts to transfer a nerve with a portion of its muscle intact to a denervated muscle. The selection of the nerve to incorporate into a NMP is examined in the first part of this article. Experimental data that argue for and against the use of a NMP, a description of the indications and the techniques for the procedure, and a review of the clinical results are detailed.

Experiments using excised canine larynges and experimental air tract fluid were conducted to clarify the movement of air tract fluid in association with vocal fold vibration by means of X-ray stroboscope system. It was thought that the movement of air tract fluid in lubricating of the larynx during phonation was closely correlated to vocal fold vibration, especially the wave motion of the mucous membrane of the vocal folds and the movement of air tract fluid on the glottis might be one of parameters to evaluate the flexibility of the mucous membrane of the vocal folds.

We used molecular and morphological data to investigate the hidden diversity within the Hypsiboas semilineatus species group, and more specifically within H. geographicus, an allegedly widespread species in northern South America. As a result, the identity of H. geographicus was clarified, several candidate species were detected and one of them, from the eastern Guiana Shield, is described herein as a preliminary step to resolve the taxonomy of the group. Hypsiboas diabolicus sp. nov. is mainly distinguished from closely-related species by an acuminate snout in lateral view, well-developed web

Reinnervation of paralyzed intralaryngeal muscles by axonal sprouting from adjacent intact muscles (the phenomenon of muscular neurotization) has been observed, but the source is uncertain. The potential for laryngeal reinnervation of the posterior cricoarytenoid muscle (PCA) from contralateral PCA motor nerve sprouting in a rabbit model was investigated. Unilateral PCA denervation was produced by vagotomy. The rabbits were examined for signs of PCA recovery for up to 6 months, using fiberoptic endoscopy, electromyography (EMG), and histology. No return of vocal cord abduction, EMG activity, o

Ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) are a useful tool for evaluating emotion and motivation in rodents. Rhythmic stroking in rats induces positive affective 50-kHz USVs and reward-seeking behavior. This response involves the dorsal column tract as the ascending pathway; however, supraspinal mechanisms remain unknown. We hypothesized that the ventral posterolateral nucleus of the thalamus (VPL), which receives somatosensory inputs from the spinal cord via the dorsal column-medial lemniscus pathway, might be involved in positive 50-kHz USV production and motivated tactile reward-induced behavior. Human-controlled regimes can entrain behavioural responses and may impact animal welfare. Therefore, understanding the influence of schedules on animal behaviour can be a valuable tool to improve welfare, however information on behaviour overnight and in the absence of husbandry staff remains rare. Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops spp.) are highly social marine mammals and the most common cetacean found in captivity. They communicate using frequency modulated signature whistles, a whistle type that is individually distinctive and used as a contact call. We investigated the vocalisations of ten do

The perception of airborne infrasound (sounds below 20 Hz, inaudible to humans except at very high levels) has been documented in a handful of mammals and birds. While animals that produce vocalizations with infrasonic components (e.g. elephants) present conspicuous examples of potential use of infrasound in the context of communication, the extent to which airborne infrasound perception exists among terrestrial animals is unclear. Given that most infrasound in the environment arises from geophysical sources, many of which could be ecologically relevant, communication might not be the only use

Recent theories of norepinephrine (NE) function suggest that NE modulates the transition between stereotyped, goal-directed behavior and more variable, exploratory behaviors that facilitate learning and adaptation. We provide evidence for context-dependent switching by NE that is analogous to this explore/exploit strategy in the vocal system of the zebra finch (Taeniopygia guttata). Stimulation of the locus coeruleus, the major source of NE in the brain, decreases song trial-to-trial variability, transforming the variable, exploratory "undirected" song into song that resembles the more stereot

Anxiety disorders pose one of the biggest threats to mental health in the world, and they predominantly emerge early in life. However, research of anxiety disorders and fear-related memories during development has been largely neglected, and existing treatments have been developed based on adult models of anxiety. The present review describes animal models of anxiety disorders across development and what is currently known of their pharmacology. To summarize, the underlying mechanisms of intrinsic 'unlearned' fear are poorly understood, especially beyond the period of infancy. Models using 'le

Several marine autonomous recording units (MARUs) were deployed in northeastern Gulf of Mexico from 2010–2012 to study the acoustic ecology of Bryde's whales (Balaenoptera edeni) following the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. However, the acoustic repertoire of this sub-population is poorly documented, presently limiting the efficacy of acoustic monitoring applications. Numerous stereotyped, low-frequency signals from a putative biological sound source were found throughout the recordings. Sounds fell into three categories distinguished by spectral and temporal properties. Multiple calls overlappe

The killer whale is among the few species in which cultural change accumulates over many generations, leading to cumulative cultural evolution. Killer whales have group-specific vocal repertoires which are thought to be learned rather than being genetically coded. It is supposed that divergence between vocal repertoires of sister groups increases gradually over time due to random learning mistakes and innovations. In this case, the similarity of calls across groups must be correlated with pod relatedness and, consequently, with each other. In this study we tested this prediction by comparing t

The tiger moth Bertholdia trigona is the only animal in nature known to defend itself by jamming the sonar of its predators - bats. In this study we analyzed the three-dimensional flight paths and echolocation behavior of big brown bats (Eptesicus fuscus) attacking B. trigona in a flight room over seven consecutive nights to determine the acoustic mechanism of the sonar-jamming defense. Three mechanisms have been proposed: (1) the phantom echo hypothesis, which states that bats misinterpret moth clicks as echoes; (2) the ranging interference hypothesis, which states that moth clicks degrade th

Cicada barbara lusitanica males presented a stereotyped singing response behaviour when exposed to a playback of the conspecific song. Males preferred (as measured by the time taken to sing) the conspecific signal to heterospecific songs that differed markedly in temporal pattern. Manipulation of the gross temporal pattern of C. barbara calling song significantly reduced stimulus attractiveness. Indeed, C. barbara males stopped responding to stimuli in which the temporal pattern approached the characteristic C. orni song, a sympatric and closely related species. If present in females, the pref

Lutzomyia longipalpis (Lutz & Neiva, 1912) (Diptera: Psychodidae: Phlebotominae) is a vector of visceral leishmaniasis in the Americas and it might represent a complex of sibling species. Reproductive isolation between closely related species often involves differences in courtship behaviour. cacophony (cac) and period (per) are two Drosophila genes that control features of the "lovesong" males produce during courtship that has been implicated in the sexual isolation between closely related species. We are using gene fragments from L. longipalpis' homologues of these two genes to study the spe

Lesions of the ventromedial hypothalamus (VMN) depress lordosis but increase ultrasonic vocalization in female hamsters. These changes are consistent with the behavioral incompatibility of lordosis and ultrasound production and suggest that the VMN coordinates short-term changes in these behaviors. In keeping with past results, unilateral lesions disrupted lordosis responses to contralateral flank stimulation. The change appeared within 15 min after the lesion and was much more rapid than the corresponding effect in rats. For hamsters, these findings support other evidence suggesting VMN media

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: Recent studies have evaluated surgical techniques aimed at reducing noise and improving airway function in horses with recurrent laryngeal neuropathy (RLN). These techniques require general anaesthesia and are invasive. A minimally invasive transnasal surgical technique for treatment of RLN that may be employed in the standing, sedated horse would be advantageous.
OBJECTIVE: To determine whether unilateral laser-assisted ventriculocordectomy (LVC) improves upper airway function and reduces noise during inhalation in exercising horses with laryngeal hemiplegia (LH

In many dairy industries, but particularly those that are pasture-based and have seasonal calving, "surplus calves," which are mostly male, are killed at a young age because they are of low value and it is not economically viable to raise them. Such calves are either killed on farm soon after birth or sent for slaughter at an abattoir. In countries where calves are sent for slaughter the age ranges from 3-4 days (New Zealand and Australia; "bobby calves") to 3-4 weeks (e.g., Ireland); they are not weaned. All calves are at the greatest risk of death in the 1st month of life but when combined w
