Recycling the powder of spent alkaline batteries as a sustainable and reusable catalyst in producing biodiesel from waste cooking oil.

Alkaline batteries are widely used in contemporary society. However, their black powder, which contains metals, categorizes them as hazardous waste, posing environmental risks if not disposed of correctly. Similarly, waste cooking oil (WCO), frequently produced in homes and restaurants, is often discarded into the environment as waste. In this study, the spent black powder from alkaline batteries was effectively utilized as a catalyst for biodiesel generation from WCO. This catalyst, containing carbonaceous materials, MnO2, ZnO, and K, facilitated both esterification and transesterification pr

Insights into the hydrolysis/alcoholysis/ammonolysis mechanisms of ethylene naphthalate dimer using density functional theory (DFT) method.

Hydrolysis, alcoholysis and ammonolysis are viable routes for the efficient degradation and recycling of polyethylene naphthalate (PEN) plastic waste. Various possible hydrolysis/alcoholysis/ammonolysis reaction pathways for the degradation mechanism of the ethylene naphthalate dimer were investigated using the density functional theory (DFT) B3P86/6-31++G(d,p). To determine the thermodynamic and kinetic parameters, geometric structure optimization and frequency calculation were performed on a range of intermediates, transition states, and products associated with the reaction. The calculation

Enzymatic Hydrolysis Systems Enhance the Efficiency and Biological Properties of Hydrolysates from Frozen Fish Processing Co-Products.

Co-products from the frozen fish processing industry often lead to financial losses. Therefore, it is essential to transform these co-products into profitable goods. This study explores the production of fish protein hydrolysates (FPH) from three co-products: the heads and bones of black scabbardfish (Aphanopus carbo), the carcasses of gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata), and the trimmings of Nile perch (Lates niloticus). Four enzymatic hydrolysis systems were tested: an endopeptidase (Alcalase, A), an exopeptidase (Protana, P), two-stage hydrolysis with an endopeptidase followed by an exopeptid

Metabolic, Inflammatory, and Molecular Impact of Cancer Cachexia on the Liver.

Cancer-associated cachexia (CAC) is a severe wasting syndrome, marked by involuntary weight loss and muscle wasting. It is a leading cause of cancer-related morbidity and mortality, and is driven by systemic, chronic low-grade inflammation. Key cytokines, such as IL-6 and GDF15, activate catabolic pathways in many organs. This study examined the role of inflammation and metabolic disruption in the liver during CAC, focusing on its dual role as both a target and a source of inflammatory factors. The analysis covered protein and lipid metabolism disturbances, including the hepatic production of

Land application of biosolid, livestock, and drilling wastes to US farmland: a potential pathway for the redistribution of contaminants in the environment.

In the United States (U.S.), waste byproducts generated from the treatment of municipal waste (biosolids), production of livestock (livestock waste), and drilling of oil and gas wells (drilling waste) are commonly applied to agricultural lands. Although this can be a cost-effective reuse/disposal practice, there is limited research on the potential for contaminant exposures and effects on ecosystems, wildlife, and human health from such land applications. In this study, we conducted extensive chemical, microbial, and toxicity analyses of biosolid, livestock, and drilling wastes just prior to l

Disentangling the History of Deep Ocean Disposal for DDT and Other Industrial Waste Off Southern California.

Ocean disposal of industrial waste from technical DDT [mainly 1,1'-(2,2,2-trichloroethane-1,1-diyl)bis(4-chlorobenzene), or 4,4'-DDT] manufacture occurred historically in the Southern California Bight. However, the paucity of historical records highlights uncertainties as to the mode, location, and timing of disposal or ongoing ecological effects of these wastes. This study combines sampling, chemical analysis, and numerical modeling of deep San Pedro Basin sediments revealing substantial DDT contamination that extends at least 25 km from the mainland. These findings narrate bulk DDT waste dis

Adaptive evolution of Candida maltosa improves the bioconversion of depolymerized plastic feedstock by targeting biosurfactant production.

UNLABELLED: Thermal oxo-degradation (TOD) of plastic can transform plastic waste into fermentable feedstocks. Bioconversion of the TOD products could be used as feedstocks in a biorefinery concept and lead to new avenues for plastic waste upcycling. Previous work demonstrated this concept with high-density polyethylene (HDPE), the most abundant type of plastic, and identified the nonconventional yeast Candida maltosa as a promising candidate for this application. Here, we describe the evolution of an improved strain of C. maltosa and characterize the uptake mechanisms of TOD products from HDPE

[Lead in the environment of Poland].

Lead belongs to those elements which have a great variety of applications in the up-to-date technology. In the form of waste products or automotive wastes it has been brought into a global circulation. The authors attempt to present harmful effects of this "environmental poison" on individual media and human population in Poland. Following published and non-published data, an outline of lead geochemistry, anthropo-genetic sources of lead emission into the environment, concentration of lead in the ambient air, surface water, soil, plants and food, is presented. The data are interpreted on the b…

Exploring the biotechnological potential of terrestrial hot spring microbiomes for CO2 utilisation.

BACKGROUND: Terrestrial hot springs are extreme environments shaped by geothermal heat, geogenic gases and extremes of pH and temperatures. Their gas fluxes, which include CO2, CO, H2S and SO2, mirror the chemical composition of CO2-rich waste streams. Microbial communities inhabiting these environments are typically thermotolerant or thermophilic and sustained by CO2 fixation and chemolithotrophic metabolism. Such communities may therefore provide a natural starting point for developing ex-situ, consortium-based biotechnologies capable of operating under elevated temperatures and chemically h

Value-added utilization of electric furnace nickel-iron slag to enhance the performance of magnesium sodium phosphate cement.

Electric furnace nickel-iron slag is an industrial solid waste obtained by cooling the molten slag after the production of nickel and iron. Its main chemical components are SiO2, Fe2O3, and MgO. This study explores the impact of nickel-iron slag on the properties of magnesium sodium phosphate cement (MNPC), with the objective of addressing the environmental pollution caused by nickel-iron slag and reducing the cost of MNPC. Through experimentation, it has been found that as the content of nickel-iron slag increases, the volume deformation of MNPC is improved. When 30 % nickel-iron slag is adde

A field study on using soybean waste-derived superabsorbent hydrogel to enhance growth of vegetables.

Food security is critical and has become a global concern with many of our basic food crops growing in areas with high drought risk. To improve soil water holding capacity, hydrogels are a promising solution. However, the current ones are mostly derived from petroleum products and are environmental unsustainable. In this study, the main objective is to determine if bio-based hydrogel can help in the growth of leafy vegetables while minimizing water use under field conditions. To achieve this, we developed an okara-derived hydrogel (Ok-PAA; OP) from by-products of bean curd and soybean milk pro

Study of the potential for Streptomyces coelicolor to produce bioactive compounds from flower waste as a sustainable feedstock.

Agricultural and horticultural industries across the globe lead to vast quantities of waste, often disposed of indiscriminately both at the point of production and by consumers. These wastes can lead to pollution of local environments and eco-systems, such as those in India affected by the 800 thousand tonnes of floral waste annually. Floral waste is rich in compounds useful in the personal care and pharmaceutical industries, such as terpenoids and other phenolics. These compounds are synthesised and modified by many microorganisms, including Streptomyces, the microorganisms responsible for ma

A University-Led Take-Back Program for Pharmaceutical Waste Management: Eleven Years of Real-World Evidence on Medication Non-Use and Disposal Patterns.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Improper medication use, premature treatment discontinuation, and inadequate disposal contribute to irrational drug consumption and environmental contamination. Although pharmaceutical take-back programs have expanded globally, real-world evidence on household medication accumulation in academic and community settings remains limited. This study aimed to describe longitudinal patterns of medication collection during an eleven-year university-based take-back campaign, with detailed pharmacological characterization available for selected post-pandemic years. METHODS: Real

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in the atmosphere of waste management infrastructures: Uncovering secondary fluorotelomer alcohols, particle size distribution, and human inhalation exposure.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have been applied in numerous industrial and consumer products, the majority of which flow into waste management infrastructures (WMIs) at the end of their life cycles, but little is known about atmospheric releases of PFAS from these facilities. In this study, we addressed this key issue by investigating 49 PFAS, including 23 ionic and 26 neutral and precursor PFAS, in the potential sources (n = 4; within or adjacent to WMIs) and reference sites (n = 2; coastal and natural reserve sites) in urban and rural areas of Hong Kong, China. Chemical hazards in health care: high hazard, high risk, but low protection.

It is counter-intuitive that the healthcare industry, whose mission is the care of the sick, is itself a "high-hazard" industry for the workers it employs. Possessing every hazard class, with chemical agents in the form of pharmaceuticals, sterilants, and germicidals in frequent use, this industry sector consistently demonstrates poor injury and illness statistics, among the highest in the United States, and in the European Union (EU), 34% higher than the average work-related accident rate. In both the United States and the EU, about 10% of all workers are employed in the healthcare sector, an

Estimate of mercury emissions to the atmosphere from petroleum.

An estimate of the contribution of mercury to the atmospheric environment from petroleum processed in the United States is constructed from recent data. The estimate is based on a mass balance approach for mercury in crude oil, in refined products, and in waste streams (air, water, solid waste) from refineries. Although there are insufficient data at present to have a high degree of confidence in the mean amount and range of mercury concentrations in crude oil or in refined products, the framework of the estimate should assist direction for the acquisition of additional data. [Study on secular changes of cadmium concentration accumulated in main organs of Japanese].

With the development of the mining and manufacturing industries and the petrochemical industry, cadmium (Cd) has been used not only for metal products but also petroleum products. Recently, environmental pollution due to waste fluids and gases from factories using cadmium and also domestic waste materials has become a cause for concern. In this connection, studies on the accumulated levels of Cd in the human body, its age-distribution in the general population and its secular changes during the last decade would be useful for clarifying the degree of contamination in the human body and providi
