Seeing beyond white light: fluorescence for safer laparoscopic cholecystectomy.

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) remains the standard treatment for symptomatic gallstone disease, yet bile duct injury persists as a serio … ging as a pragmatic, radiation-free modality that extends the surgeon's visual capabilities "beyond white light," contributing to safer and more precise LC. Ongoing technological refinement and well-designed multicenter studies will be crucial to confirm its clinical benefits and define its place in routine surgical practice.

Autobiographical memory in children: relation to neural white matter.

Autobiographical memory involves the integration of self-referential memory into a coherent narrative of life experiences. Recently, several studies of healthy adults and older adults with neurodegenerative disorders have utilised diffusion imaging to construct a network of cortical regions that support autobiographical memory. We extend this work to an age range, 4 to 7 years, when autobiographical memory is still developing. We correlated the recall of autobiographical events with limbic white matter tracts that have been previously implicated in episodic and autobiographical recall, i.e., t…

Red cell distribution width and cerebral white matter hyperintensity.

Red cell distribution width (RDW) is an indicator of red blood cell size heterogeneity and may reflect underlying chronic hypoxemia or inflammation. While RDW has been associated with the prognosis of various pulmonary and cardiovascular diseases, its relevance in cerebrovascular disease remains underexplored. In this study, we evaluated the association between RDW and cerebral small vessel disease (cSVD). We evaluated consecutive health check-up participants who underwent brain MRI between January 2006 and December 2013. As subtypes of cSVD, white matter hyperintensity (WMH) was quantitativel…

Prognostic Impact of Different Definitions of White-Coat Hypertension.

BACKGROUND: Different definitions of white-coat hypertension (WCH) may explain its variable outcome across studies. METHODS: In an Italian study started in 1986, we followed 3,153 people with (office blood pressure (BP) >=140/90 mmHg) and 457 without office hypertension for a mean of 10.4 years. None had previous cardiovascular disease. All underwent 24-h ambulatory BP (ABP) monitoring. We defined white-coat hypertension (WCH) as an average 24-h ABP < 130/80 mmHg or <125/75 mmHg. The primary outcome was a composite of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) and all-cause mortality. RESULT…

Multiscale Heterogeneity of White Matter Morphometry in Psychiatric Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Interindividual variability in the neurobiological and clinical characteristics of mental illnesses are often overlooked by classical group-mean case-control studies. Studies using normative modeling to infer person-specific deviations of gray matter volume have indicated that group means are not representative of most individuals. The extent to which this variability is present in white matter morphometry, which is integral to brain function, remains unclear. METHODS: We applied warped Bayesian linear regression normative models to T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging data and …

One-pot synthesis of primary phosphines from white phosphorus.

Aryl and alkyl chlorides are inexpensive and readily accessible, making them ideal reagents for converting white phosphorus (P4) into primary phosphines RPH2. However, methods for achieving this transformation directly, bypassing undesired intermediates like PCl3, have remained elusive. This report describes the 'one-pot' synthesis of primary organophosphines from P4 using organotin compounds, including a multi-gram synthesis of PhPH2 featuring efficient recovery of organotin reagents for potential recycling.

Chest X-ray interpretation: Not just black and white.

Chest X-rays (CXRs) are a fundamental diagnostic tool in acute and critical care, providing a rapid and noninvasive method for evaluating thoracic conditions. Although radiologists interpret the images, nurses are often the first to review the reports and relay findings to the clinical team. This article provides a practical guide to understanding and interpreting CXRs and outlines a systematic approach to aid in consistent evaluation. The visualization of both normal anatomy and key abnormalities are discussed, including pleural effusions, pulmonary edema, pneumonia, atelectasis, pneumothorax

Role of Oligodendrocyte Lineage Cells in White Matter Injury.

This chapter provides a comprehensive review of white matter injuries, with a particular focus on oligodendrocyte lineage cell-mediated mechanisms and strategies. Traumatic mechanical insults, vascular conditions, perinatal injuries, and degenerative diseases all have white matter components and can be studied using different animal models. These distinct etiologies converge on similar pathophysiological features comprised of programmed cell death of oligodendrocyte lineage cells, demyelination, release of myelin debris, ion imbalance, excitotoxicity, mitochondrial dysfunction, and Wallerian d…

[Vomitus in a white shepherd dog - What's your diagnosis?].

Acute disease of any visceral organ, including an intrathoracic organ, can cause nausea and an acute abdomen. If acute vomiting can neither be explained by clinical examination nor laboratory and radiology findings, the etiolgy must be searched outside the gastrointestinal tract in less common locations. Testicular torsion was the cause in the present report.

A Rat Model of Hyperoxia-Induced White Matter Injury.

BACKGROUND: Preterm infants are commonly exposed to hyperoxia, which can induce hyperoxia-induced white matter injury (WMI), commonly resulting in cognitive deficits. Existing neonatal rat models of WMI show significant variability. Therefore, this study aimed to develop a reliable rat model of hyperoxia-induced WMI. METHODS: Two-day-old male newborn rats were randomly assigned to either the hyperoxia (HO) or the normoxia (NO) group. Mice in the HO group were exposed to a high-oxygen-inspired fraction (0.80) for either 24 h, 48 h, 5 d, 7 d, or 10 d, while the NO group was exposed to the stand…

Normal appearing white matter and disability in multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is characterized by lesions and atrophy on conventional MRI, yet these often fail to explain disability. Diffusion MRI (dMRI) detects microstructural injury with diffusion tensor (DTI) and kurtosis imaging (DKI) offering sensitivity, and Standard Model Imaging (SMI) providing biologically interpretable parameters. We evaluated whether these clinically feasible dMRI metrics are associated with disability beyond volumetric and lesion measures, and whether effects arise from normal-appearing white matter (NAWM). METHODS: This cross-sectional stu…

Identification of functional white matter networks in BOLD fMRI.

White matter signals in resting state blood oxygen level dependent functional magnetic resonance (BOLD-fMRI) have been largely discounted, yet there is growing evidence that these signals are indicative of brain activity. Understanding how these white matter signals capture function can provide insight into brain physiology. Moreover, functional signals could potentially be used as early markers for neurological changes, such as in Alzheimer's Disease. To investigate white matter brain networks, we leveraged the OASIS-3 dataset to extract white matter signals from resting state BOLD-FMRI data …

White adipose tissue in metabolic associated fatty liver disease.

BACKGROUND: Metabolic associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) is a prevalent chronic liver condition globally, currently lacking universally recognized therapeutic drugs, thereby increasing the risk of cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Research has reported an association between white adipose tissue and MAFLD. SCOPE OF REVIEW: White adipose tissue (WAT) is involved in lipid metabolism and can contribute to the progression of MAFLD by mediating insulin resistance, inflammation, exosomes, autophagy, and other processes. This review aims to elucidate the mechanisms through which WAT plays …

Divergent functional connectivity changes associated with white matter hyperintensities.

Age-related white matter hyperintensities are a common feature and are known to be negatively associated with structural integrity, functional connectivity, and cognitive performance. However, this has yet to be fully understood mechanistically. We analyzed multiple MRI modalities acquired in 465 non-demented individuals from the Swedish BioFINDER study including 334 cognitively normal and 131 participants with mild cognitive impairment. White matter hyperintensities were automatically quantified using fluid-attenuated inversion recovery MRI and parameters from diffusion tensor imaging were es…
