ABO blood groups and fertility in an Indian population.

A total of 589 compatible mating couples could be investigated against 432 incompatible mating couples in order to determine the selective mechanism operating on ABO blood groups. There appears to be no striking difference in the proportion of childless couples between the two groups. The mean number of living children presents a significant difference. There is 21% deficiency of 'A' children in the two groups. Similarly, there is 16% deficiency of 'B' children in the two groups. It appears that there is 31.9% fetal wastage in incompatible matings as compared with 17.15% in compatible matings.

Red blood cell alloimmunization in transfusion-dependent β-thalassemia major patients in Eastern Iran.

Patients with thalassemia major require regular blood transfusions, which cause complications such as iron overload, increased risk of blood-borne diseases, and production of alloantibodies against donor blood cells. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and types of alloantibodies in patients with transfusion-dependent thalassemia. This cross-sectional study was conducted on 74 transfusion-dependent thalassemia patients in southern Khorasan Province, Iran. The patients’ ABO and Rh blood groups phenotyping was determined. Serum samples from all patients underwent initial antibody scre

Human autologous and allogeneic rosettes.

Human red blood cells can bind to human peripheral blood lymphocytes. The percentage of these rosette-forming cells (TEh) depends on various conditions including temperature and the use of selected foetal calf serum. It is improved by toluidine blue. Prior incubation at 37 degrees C is not necessary. ABO and rhesus antigen D have no influence on rosette formation. Analysis of human rosettes in T and B cell rich populations, in patients with chronic lymphatic leukaemia or T cell lymphoma provides further evidence that human autologous and allogeneic rosette-forming cells belong to a T cell subp

ABO(H) blood group antigens of the human erythrocyte membrane: contribution of glycoprotein and glycolipid.

Formaldehyde-fixed human erythrocytes were extracted with sodium dodecyl sulfate and with three other solvent systems, at least two of which are known to remove glycolipids quantitatively. The extracted cells possessed the ability to absorb the ABO blood group-specific antibody at about one-third the level of unextracted cells. Treatment of fresh cells with pronase also reduced the ability of the cells to absorb the antibody, further supporting the presence of ABO blood group active glycoprotein in the membrane. Trypsinization of red cells, while removing PAS-1 and partly PAS-2, did not lead t

ABO and Rh blood groups in relation to ovarian, endometrial and cervical cancer risk among the population of South-East Siberia.

BACKGROUND: There is a large amount of evidence that the ABO blood group system may play a role in disease etiology. A relationship between ABO and Rhesus blood groups and cancer risk has been demonstrated in a number of studies. However, in relation to gynecological malignancies, these findings are inconsistent and contradictory. AIM: To perform a case-control study for analysis of the distribution of ABO and Rh blood antigens among women from South-East Siberia who suffered from ovarian, endometrial and cervical cancer, and to assess the potential role of these antigens in carcinogenesis.

Association of ABO and Rh blood groups with clinicopathological features and lymph node involvement in surgically treated thyroid malignancies: a retrospective single-center study.

This study investigated the association between ABO and Rh blood group antigens and the clinicopathological features of 418 patients who underwent thyroidectomy for primary thyroid malignancy between December 2016 and June 2023. Since continuous variables did not follow a normal distribution (p < 0.05), data were presented as median and interquartile range (IQR). The distribution of ABO blood groups was A (44.5%), O (31.8%), B (16.0%), and AB (7.7%), with 90.9% of patients being Rh-positive. The median age of the cohort was 48 years (IQR: 19). While ABO groups showed no significant difference

Investigating the Association Between ABO Blood Groups and Rhesus Factors with Dengue and Chikungunya Virus Infections During the 2017 Outbreak in Bangladesh.

This retrospective study was conducted in 2017 during the dual dengue and chikungunya outbreak in Bangladesh. Febrile participants underwent blood tests for chikungunya, dengue, and ABO groups and rhesus (Rh) factors. Blood grouping information was gathered from healthy donors. Males and those aged between 18 and 49 years had a higher risk of contracting dengue and chikungunya. Blood group O exhibited the highest infection rates at ∼50%, whereas group AB had the lowest at ∼9% among the participants in the study. Yet, when considering the general population's blood group distribution, the combi

The risk assessment study for hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn in a University Hospital in Turkey.

Maternal red-cell alloimmunization occurs when a woman's immune system is sensitized to foreign red-blood cell surface antigens, leading to the production of alloantibodies. The resulting antibodies often cross the placenta during pregnancies in sensitized women and, if the fetus is positive for red-blood-cell surface antigens, this will lead to hemolysis of fetal red-blood cells and anemia. The most severe cases of hemolytic disease in the fetus and newborn baby are caused by anti-D, anti-c, anti-E and anti-K antibodies. There are limited data available on immunization rates in pregnant women

ABO blood type concordance-dependent variations in umbilical cord blood: Insights from twin pregnancies.

BACKGROUND: Umbilical cord blood (UCB) is a rich source of hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells for regenerative medicine. This study characterized the cellular composition of UCB from twin pregnancies to identify blood type concordance (BTC)-related differences. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted at the Vinmec Tissue Biobank, involving 128 twin deliveries (2019-2023). Linear correlation and mixed-effect modeling were employed to analyze relationships between cellular factors and BTC in twins. RESULTS: Maternal and gestational ages were 31.9 ± 5.56 years and 3

Use of low titer O whole blood in infants and young children undergoing cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass.

BACKGROUND: Low titer group O whole blood (LTOWB) is commonly used for severe bleeding in trauma patients. LTOWB may also benefit young children requiring cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) at risk of severe bleeding. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: In this retrospective study, children <2 years old who underwent cardiac surgery with CPB were included. Comparisons were performed between those receiving component therapy (CT) versus those receiving LTOWB plus CT (LTOWB+CT). Outcomes included drainage tube (DT) output and total transfusion volumes. Optimization-based weighting was used

Blood Mixing Upregulates Platelet Membrane-Bound CD40 Ligand Expression In Vitro Independent of Abo Compatibility.

Platelets play a central role in the inflammation response via CD40 ligand (CD40L) expression, which may lead to transfusion reactions. The precise role of platelet CD40L-mediated inflammation in transfusion reactions is unclear. Therefore, we assessed the effects of in vitro blood mixing on platelet CD40L expression. In addition, we examined the effect of ABO compatibility on CD40L expression. Donor-packed red blood cells were acquired from a blood bank, and recipient blood was obtained from patients undergoing cardiac surgery and prepared as washed platelets. Donor blood was mixed with suspe

[Maternal blood group 0 as a risk factor of neonatal hyperbilirubinemia requiring treatment].

The present prospective study indicates that children of mothers with blood group O run a double risk of hyperbilirubinemia requiring treatment as compared to children of mothers of blood group A, and 5-10 times increased risk of needing exchange transfusion. The most frequent cause of need for exchange transfusion was ABO-incompatibility between mother and child. A positive direct antiglobulin reaction in an ABO-incompatible child in need of treatment doubles the risk of exchange transfusion being required. Blood group O in the mother should be considered to be an independent risk factor for

Impact of Graft-Recipient ABO Compatibility on Outcomes after Umbilical Cord Blood Transplant for Nonmalignant Disease.

Existing literature shows mixed conclusions regarding the impact of ABO incompatibility on outcomes after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Because the future for umbilical cord blood (UCB) expansion technologies is bright, we assessed whether this typically overlooked graft characteristic impacted various outcomes after UCB transplantation (UCBT) for nonmalignant disorders (NMDs). A prospectively maintained institutional blood and marrow transplant program database was queried for all patients undergoing first UCBT for NMDs. UCB and recipient ABO compatibility was considered as matched

Pure red cell aplasia after ABO major-mismatched allogeneic peripheral blood stem cell transplantation successfully treated with plasma exchange and low-dose steroid: two case reports.

Pure red cell aplasia (PRCA) is a complication of ABO-incompatible allogeneic stem cell transplantation. The mechanism is not well known, although the isoagglutinin titer before transplantation or cyclosporine use is considered to be the cause. Patients with this complication require more blood transfusions than those without it. There is no standard treatment. We report two cases of PRCA after allogeneic peripheral blood stem cell transplantation that were successfully treated with plasma exchange and low-dose steroid.
