[Bone mineral density in patients with scleroderma systematica].

AIM: To study the frequency and magnitude of a reduction in bone mineral density (BMD) and its association with clinical parameters in patients with scleroderma systematica (SDS). SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Fifty-six postmenopausal women aged 45-71 years (58.1±7.1 years) with a valid diagnosis of SDS and 44 age-matched healthy women were examined. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (Hologic QDR 4500, Waltham, MA) was performed in all the included patients to measure BMD in the lumbar spine (L(I)-L(IV)), femoral neck, and proximal femur. RESULTS: The patients with SDS and the healthy women showed no

The Effect of the Lumbar Vertebral Malpositioning on Bone Mineral Density Measurements of the Lumbar Spine by Dual-Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry.

A significant discrepancy between the results of previous human and phantoms studies is identified regarding the effects of vertebral positioning on bone mineral density (BMD) measurements. We aimed to evaluate the effects of lumbar vertebral positioning on BMD measurements by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry in a human cadaveric spine phantom. A spine phantom was designed using L1-L4 vertebrae harvested from a 48-year-old male cadaver without coronal or sagittal deformity. The spine phantom was scanned by DEXXUM T bone densitometer in a constant scanning speed of 30 mm/s and resolution of 1.0

Effects of antidepressants on postmenopausal bone loss - A 5-year longitudinal study from the OSTPRE cohort.

BACKGROUND: Osteoporosis and depression are major health problems worldwide. The association between antidepressants, a treatment for depression, and bone health needs more detailed exploration. OBJECTIVE: The present study investigates antidepressant medication use and postmenopausal bone loss over time. METHODS: A total of 1988 women (aged 57-67) participating in the Kuopio Osteoporosis Risk Factor and Prevention Study (OSTPRE) cohort responded to a postal enquiry and had their femoral neck bone mineral density (BMD) measured in 1999 and again in 2004. Data on antidepressant use was obtain

Serum uric acid and incident osteoporotic fractures in old people: The PRO.V.A study.

PURPOSE: Although high serum uric acid (SUA) levels are associated with negative outcomes in older people, recent studies reported that hyperuricemia could help protect against the onset of bone fractures. We consequently examined whether baseline SUA levels were associated with risk of incident osteoporotic fractures in a representative group of elderly people with no fractures or other bone-modifying conditions or drugs at the baseline. METHODS: Among 3099 people aged ≥ 65 years initially involved in the PRO.V.A. study, 1586 participants with no prior diagnosis of osteoporotic fractures, an

Mammographic breast density and breast cancer risk: interactions of percent density, absolute dense, and non-dense areas with breast cancer risk factors.

We investigated if associations of breast density and breast cancer differ according to the level of other known breast cancer risk factors, including body mass index (BMI), age at menarche, parity, age at first child's birth, age at menopause, alcohol consumption, a family history of breast cancer, a history of benign breast disease, and physical activity. This study included 1,044 postmenopausal incident breast cancer cases diagnosed within the Nurses' Health Study cohort and 1,794 matched controls. Percent breast density, absolute dense, and non-dense areas were measured from digitized film

Bone Disorders in Chronic Kidney Disease: An Update in Diagnosis and Management.

Renal osteodystrophy (ROD) is a bone disorder that occurs in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients and is associated with 2- to 14-fold increased fracture risk compared to the general population. Risk of fractures is also increased in kidney transplant recipients especially within the first 5 years after transplantation. Fractures in CKD patients are associated with increased morbidity and mortality; thus, proper screening and management of CKD bone complications is critical to improving clinical outcomes. Tetracycline double-labeled transiliac crest bone biopsy with histomorphometry is the go

Well-differentiated neuroendocrine tumor and osteoporosis: incidental findings?

The neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) have an increased incidence related to the age. Secondary osteoporosis might be found in patients with bone metastases and in those with NETs associated Cushing's disease or primary hyperparathyroidism. Primary osteoporosis might be found in postmenopausal women, but in case with non-metastatic NET as G1 NET it is difficult to establish the NET contribution to the bone loss. We present the case of a 53-year-old female accidentally diagnosed with G1 lung NET after surgery of the tumor. The immunohistochemistry pointed positive reaction for CHROMO, SYN and negati

One-hour glucose during an oral glucose challenge prospectively predicts β-cell deterioration and prediabetes in obese Hispanic youth.

OBJECTIVE: In adults, 1-h glucose during an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) predicts the development of type 2 diabetes independent of fasting and 2-h glucose concentrations. The purpose of the current investigation was to examine the utility of elevated 1-h glucose levels to prospectively predict deterioration in β-cell function and the development of prediabetes in high-risk youth. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Obese Latino youth with a family history of type 2 diabetes (133 male and 100 female; age 11.1 ± 1.7 years) completed a baseline OGTT and were divided into two groups based upon a

Diffuse osteosclerosis in a patient with prostate cancer.

A 61-year-old man was referred to our outpatient clinic because of severe bilateral upper leg pain for 1 year. On admission, the patient had anemia and a high serum alkaline phosphatase level. Lumbar and femoral neck T-scores were +10.5 and +9.6, respectively. His radius 33 % T-score was -2.8. Plain radiographs of the patient's pelvis, spine, and long bones revealed osteosclerosis. The patient had previously undergone a prostate biopsy, which showed prostate adenocarcinoma (Gleason score 3 + 4). The patient's total and free prostate-specific antigen were very high. According to previous record

Heart failure as a risk factor for osteoporosis and fractures.

Although heart failure (HF) and osteoporosis are common diseases, particularly in elderly populations, patients with HF have an increased risk for osteoporosis. The relationship of HF with osteoporosis is modified by gender and the severity of HF. In addition, shared risk factors, medication use, and common pathogenic mechanisms affect both HF and osteoporosis. Shared risk factors for these 2 conditions include advanced age, hypovitaminosis D, renal disease, and diabetes mellitus. Medications used to treat HF, including spironolactone, thiazide diuretics, nitric oxide donors, and aspirin, may

Impaired osteoclast differentiation and function and mild osteopetrosis development in Siglec-15-deficient mice.

Sialic acid-binding immunoglobulin-like lectin 15 (Siglec-15) is a cell surface receptor for sialylated glycan ligands. Recent in vitro studies revealed upregulated Siglec-15 expression in differentiated osteoclasts and inhibition of osteoclast differentiation by anti-Siglec-15 polyclonal antibody, demonstrating Siglec-15 involvement in osteoclastogenesis. To discern the physiological role of Siglec-15 in skeletal development and osteoclast formation and/or function in vivo, we generated Siglec-15-deficient (siglec-15(-/-)) mice and analyzed their phenotype. The siglec-15(-/-) mice developed w

The association between metabolic syndrome and bone mineral density: a meta-analysis.

Previous researches demonstrate uncertainty about the effect of metabolic syndrome (MS) on bone. We performed a meta-analysis to investigate the association of MS with bone mineral density (BMD) of spine and femoral neck (FN). In this meta-analysis, searches of Medline, Embase, Cochrane Library, Chinese biological medical database and China national knowledge infrastructure were undertaken to identify studies in humans of the association between MS and BMD. Random effects model was used for this meta-analysis. The results of our research were reported using the Preferred Reporting Items for Sy

Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry modeling to explain the increased resting energy expenditure associated with the HIV lipoatrophy syndrome.

BACKGROUND: The HIV lipoatrophy syndrome is characterized by loss of subcutaneous fat and is associated with increased resting energy expenditure (REE). Recently, dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) modeling of organ-tissue mass combined with specific organ-tissue metabolic rates has been used to gain further insight into the relation of the lean body mass to REE and to better understand differences in REE between groups. OBJECTIVE: This study examined the organ-tissue basis of the increased REE shown in HIV lipoatrophy. DESIGN: REE was measured in 29 HIV-infected patients with lipoatroph

Data acquisition analysis for femoral morphometric X-ray absorptiometry.

Bone mineral density (BMD) is a contributing factor of hip fracture risk. Other factors, such as lifestyle, the propensity for falls, and femoral geometry may influence the risk of hip fracture. The DMS Lexxos densitometer, a dual-energy X-ray densitometer can produce either a single-energy X-ray or a BMD image. The purpose of this study was to evaluate which of these 2 images enables the best detection to make femoral morphometry measurements. Spatial resolution, contrast, and noise were evaluated separately. A contrast-detail phantom was also used for the purpose of overall visual analysis.

Serum biomarker profile associated with high bone turnover and BMD in postmenopausal women.

Early diagnosis of the onset of osteoporosis is key to the delivery of effective therapy. Biochemical markers of bone turnover provide a means of evaluating skeletal dynamics that complements static measurements of BMD by DXA. Conventional clinical measurements of bone turnover, primarily the estimation of collagen and its breakdown products in the blood or urine, lack both sensitivity and specificity as a reliable diagnostic tool. As a result, improved tests are needed to augment the use of BMD measurements as the principle diagnostic modality. In this study, the serum proteome of 58 postmeno

Evaluation of densitometric bone-muscle relationships in Crohn's disease.

BACKGROUND: Patients with Crohn's disease (CD) are 1.4 to 2.5 times more likely than the normal population to sustain a fracture but the factors involved in the pathogenesis are not clearly understood. Bone mass is affected both by nutrition and by muscular activity. Trauma excepted, the largest voluntary loads on bones come from muscle contraction, not body weight. AIM: To assess the relationship between bone mass (bone mineral content) and muscle mass (lean mass) in CD patients. METHODS: Adult CD patients who had had a whole body, lumbar and hip densitometric evaluation were selected. Info
