Insulin and other injectable biologic drugs have transformed the treatment of patients suffering from diabetes1,2, yet patients and healthcare providers often prefer to use and prescribe less effective orally dosed medications3-5. Compared with subcutaneously administered drugs, oral formulations create less patient discomfort4, show greater chemical stability at high temperatures6, and do not generate biohazardous needle waste7. An oral dosage form for biologic medications is ideal; however, macromolecule drugs are not readily absorbed into the bloodstream through the gastrointestinal tract8.

The pharmacokinetic parameters of moxidectin (MXD) after intravenous and pour-on (topical) administration were studied in sixteen pigs at a single dose of 1.25 and 2.5 mg/kg BW (body weight), respectively. Blood samples were collected at pretreatment time (0 hr) over 40 days. The plasma kinetics were analyzed by WinNonlin 6.3 software through a noncompartmental model. For intravenous administration (n = 8), the elimination half-life (λZ ), the apparent volume of distribution (Vz ), and clearance (Cl) were 10.29 ± 1.90 days, 89.575 ± 29.856 L/kg, and 5.699 ± 2.374 L/kg, respectively. Microcystic lymphatic malformation (MLM), also known as "lymphangioma circumscriptum," is a lymphatic malformation which may involve the skin and subcutaneous tissues. Progressive growth of lesions may cause pressure to the surrounding organs. Lesions frequently reoccur after treatment with surgery, sclerotherapy, radiotherapy, and laser therapy. In the last decades, oral sirolimus has been successfully used in lymphatic malformations. Since systemic treatment with sirolimus is associated with various side effects, topical form of the drug has been used with satisfying results, especially for

The clinical manifestations of scabies infestation vary according to age, making the diagnosis challenging, particularly for primary care providers and dermatologists who do not routinely care for young children. We present seven cases of newborns and infants who developed inflammatory burrows and nodules early in the course, which is not typical of the eruption seen in older children and adults. We review the cutaneous features, differential diagnosis, and treatment recommendations for scabies in different age groups.

Norwegian or crusted scabies (N/CS) is a rare skin disease with very few cases reported in the dog or the cat. Two adult, stray dogs were admitted in our clinic with a generalized, multifocal to diffuse and nonpruritic dermatitis that was characterized by severe crusting, scaling, and ulceration. In both instances, leishmaniosis and N/CS were diagnosed by immunofluorescent antibody test serology, lymph node cytology, and skin scrapings in which high numbers of Sarcoptes mites were found. The combination of miticidal and antileishmanial treatment, supported by topical treatment and nutritional

Disseminated superficial actinic porokeratosis (DSAP) is a chronic condition characterized by numerous atrophic papules and patches with a distinctive peripheral keratotic ridge, typically found on sun-exposed areas. Treatment of DSAP is warranted not only for cosmetic and symptomatic benefits but also to prevent malignant transformation. Successful treatment of DSAP often is difficult and frequently requires the use of multiple modalities. Ingenol mebutate gel 0.05% is a topical medication primarily used for the treatment of actinic keratosis (AK) by inducing cell death. We report a case of D

Cutaneous malakoplakia is a rare infection-related granulomatous disease frequently associated with immunocompromised states. Foamy macrophages containing basophilic granules, called the Michaelis-Gutman bodies, are pathognomonic. We report a case of cutaneous malakoplakia in a 77-year-old male with pyoderma gangrenosum and a 2-year history of a non-healing malleolar ulcer treated successfully with cotrimoxazole.

We present a 40-year-old woman with a one-year history of a solitary and asymptomatic facial lesion. On physical examination a slightly infiltrated, smooth red to brown nodule was seen at the left malar region. A biopsy established the diagnosis of granuloma faciale. After two-months therapy with topical tacrolimus 0,1%, nodule was resolved.

Onychomycosis and tinea pedis are common fungal infections affecting the nails and feet, respectively. Two newly approved topical agents for onychomycosis are efinaconazole and tavaborole, both of which have demonstrated respectable cure rates in clinical studies. For tinea pedis, naftifine 2% and luliconazole 1% are new agents, both administered for relatively short courses, that may foster greater adherence Semin Cutan Med Surg 35(supp6):S110-S113.

Additional evidence that Demodex folliculorum may contribute to the pathogenesis of papulopustular rosacea are new studies of two topical antiparasitic agents. Ivermectin and praziquantel have recently been shown to be effective in decreasing the severity of papulopustular rosacea. These two agents significantly differ in molecular structure, but yield similar antiparasitic mechanisms of action. Higher numbers of Demodex mites are found in the skin of patients with rosacea than in people with normal skin. If Demodex play a role in pathogenesis, then hypersensitivity to the mites, their flora,

Nisoldipine is used for the treatment of hypertension and angina pectoris. However, it has very low bioavailabil-ty, which is attributed to extensive pre-systemic metabolism. In addition, nisol-ipine is highly potent (used at a low dose). Taking into consideration the fact that transdermal delivery avoids the pre-systemic metabolism and is only suit-ble for potent drugs, nisoldipine can be considered as an excellent candidate for transdermal delivery. Accordingly, the purpose of this study was to optimize nisoldipine transdermal delivery. That was achieved initially by investigating the effect

An outbreak of Tunga Penetrans (Jigger Flea) infestation affecting a number of villages near to a Central Hospital in Malawi is described. Due to the large number of affected individuals, high parasitic load, and extended duration of infection an alternative to the recommended approach of surgical removal of the flea was required. Benzyl benzoate paint and liquid paraffin had been used in local Primary Healthcare settings previously and topical treatment with antiparasitic agents has been advocated in the literature, particularly for severe infestation. Benzyl benzoate and liquid paraffin were

Henna, the dried and powdered leaf of Lawsonia inermis, is widely used as a dye for the skin, hair, and nails, and as an expression of body art, especially in Islamic and Hindu cultures. As it stains the skin reddish-brown, it is also called red henna. Black henna is the combination of red henna with p-phenylenediamine (PPD), and is used for temporary 'black henna tattoos'. This article provides a full review of the side-effects of topical application of red and black henna, both cutaneous (allergic and non-allergic) and systemic. Red henna appears to be generally safe, with rare instances of

INTRODUCTION: Paraphimosis is a urologic emergency. Many treatment options have been devised for managing this entity. The osmotic method is one of them. We used an osmotic diuretic, mannitol, for reducing paraphimosis. Mannitol is commonly used for conditions like head injury to decrease cerebral oedema, partial nephrectomy and hepatorenal syndrome; we attempted using this diuretic for reducing paraphimosis. This is a novel technique and an application of mannitol which has never been reported before.
METHODS: Starting in February 2011, we used mannitol 20% in patients presenting to urologic

Acne vulgaris is a common skin disease that is most effectively treated with a combination of topical products and, in some cases, systemic antibiotics. While it is important to treat papules, pustules, nodules, and cysts with topical or systemic antibiotics to suppress bacterial infection, all of these lesions develop from microcomedones. In fact, comedolytic agents enhance the effectiveness of antibiotics and limit the potential for recurrent acne lesions. Because of the superior comedolytic effects of topical retinoids, most patients with acne should be treated with a retinoid unless there
