By oral administration of degraded carrageenan a colitis-like disease can be induced in guinea pigs which almost exclusively affects the caecum. The biological effects of crystalline 1alpha-hydroxyvitamin D3 and crystalline 1alpha,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 have been compared on the intestinal uptake of calcium-45 by everted duodenal gut sacs from rachitic rats. Peak calcium-45 uptake was observed 1 hr after intravenous administration and both crystalline vitamin D2 analogs were of comparable potency. The rapid onset of calcium-45 uptake and the rapid attainment of maximal calcium-45 transport suggests a direct effect of these crystalline analogs on the mucosal membranes of the intestinal cell.

BACKGROUND: Laparoscopic pyloromyotomy (LP) for Infantile Hypertrophic Pyloric Stenosis (IHPS) is associated with an increased risk of mucosal tears or incomplete myotomy when compared with open myotomy. Keeping these risks in mind, a new ergonomically designed spreader for LP was developed and investigated in IHPS.

We herein report a case of cytomegalovirus (CMV) bronchitis in a 62-year-old woman with polymyositis. She presented with respiratory symptoms and CMV antigenemia while undergoing immunosuppressive therapy with methotrexate (MTX) and prednisolone (PSL). Subcutaneous injections of adrenomedullin prevented reserpine-induced gastric mucosal damage in a dose-dependent manner (1-1000 ng/kg), but did not interfere with the lesions produced by ethanol administration. A superoxide dismutase (SOD) cream containing 0.6 mg/ml of bovine SOD was prepared. It was applied locally onto the skin and mucosal lesions caused by progressive systemic sclerosis (PSS), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), Behçet's disease, herpes simplex and burns. The lesions and symptoms were rapidly improved in many cases after its administration, even when the symptoms were stabilized for several weeks before the treatment. Although the trial was open-labelled, the topical application of SOD was concluded to be effective for these conditions.
