Leg movements and periodic leg movements during sleep in the development across childhood and adolescence from 1 to 18 years.

OBJECTIVE: Age specific reference values of leg movements (LMS) and periodic leg movements (PLMS) in sleep considering their true periodicity to evaluate sleep pathologies, especially possible childhood RLS or PLMD. METHODS: In a prospective first night study of 52 healthy children/adolescents divided into six age groups from 1 to 18 years, polysomnographies were conducted and scored considering AASM rules. The frequency of LMS and PLMS were evaluated for NREM, REM, total sleep time (TST), including attention to time structure (inter-leg movement intervals, time distribution during the night)

Short-term and long-term influences of family arguments and gender difference on developing psychological well-being in Taiwanese adolescents.

Adolescent mental health is crucial for social competence and accomplishment in later life. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that approximately 20% of adolescents suffer from psychological symptoms. However, improving family risk and school environments can largely promote adolescent mental health. A longitudinal survey was conducted to investigate adolescent psychological well-being (PWB) status and associated factors in adolescents 15-20 years of age. Family and school context variables were interviewed and recorded. A total of 2896 participants were included from high, middle,

Impact of speed and magnitude of weight loss on the development of brain trophic changes in adolescents with anorexia nervosa: a case control study.

BACKGROUND: Anorexia nervosa commonly arises during adolescence and is associated with more than one medical morbidity. Abnormalities in brain structure (defined as "pseudoatrophy") are common in adolescents with anorexia nervosa; however, their correlations with endocrinological profiles and clinical parameters are still unclear. In particular, no study has described the impact of BMI (body mass index) variations (speed and magnitude of weight loss) on cerebral trophism changes. METHODS: Eleven adolescents with anorexia nervosa and 8 healthy controls underwent cerebral MRI (magnetic resonanc

Effect of low-dose insulin treatment on body weight and physical development in children and adolescents at risk for type 1 diabetes.

OBJECTIVE: Insulin's role in body weight regulation is controversial. We evaluated the effect of parenteral insulin on body weight and physical development in children and adolescents at risk for type 1 diabetes. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We performed a secondary analysis of the parenteral arm of the Diabetes Prevention Trial-Type 1 Diabetes (DPT-1), a randomized controlled trial of low-dose parenteral insulin (human ultralente insulin at 0.25 units x kg(-1) x day(-1)) in subjects with a >50% 5-year risk of diabetes. Analysis was limited to 100 subjects (55 intervention, 45 closely monitor

[Parental relationship from the perspectives of children, adolescents and clinicians. Development and clinical validation of the Parental-Representation-Screening-Questionnaire (PRSQ)].

The Parental-Representation-Screening-Questionnaire (PRSQ) is a new instrument designed to asses how children and adolescents evaluate their relationship with their parents. The aim of the questionnaire is to assess those aspects in the child-parent relationship that are crucial for a psychopathological risk. Conceptually, the PRSQ is based on cognitive self theory and systemic family theory. The PRSQ consists of 8 scales (36 items) for each parent: "freedom of decision", "emotional burden by the parents", "fears / overprotection", "conflict", "hostility / indifference", "aid for the parents",

Development and validation of the Child Activity Limitations Interview: a measure of pain-related functional impairment in school-age children and adolescents.

Recurrent pain in childhood are common and frequently impact children's everyday functioning. However, there are currently limited tools available to measure the impact of recurrent pain on children's daily activities, in particular, that can be used to identify appropriate targets for intervention and measure response to such interventions. The purpose of this study was to develop and validate a new measure, the Child Activity Limitations Interview (CALI), to improve the assessment of functional impairment due to recurrent pain in school-age children and adolescents, and to compare this measu

The Association between Exposure to Fine Particulate Air Pollution and the Trajectory of Internalizing and Externalizing Behaviors during Late Childhood and Early Adolescence: Evidence from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to high levels of fine particulate matter (PM) with aerodynamic diameter ≤2.5μm (PM2.5) via air pollution may be a risk factor for psychiatric disorders during adulthood. Yet few studies have examined associations between exposure and the trajectory of symptoms across late childhood and early adolescence. OBJECTIVE: The current study evaluated whether PM2.5 exposure at 9-11 y of age affects both concurrent symptoms as well as the longitudinal trajectory of internalizing and externalizing behaviors across the following 3 y. This issue was examined using multiple measures o

The "pro-inflammatory imprint" of ultra-processed food exposure: a review of mechanisms affecting child and adolescent health and development via the gut microbiome-inflammation axis.

The prevalence of ultra-processed food (UPF) consumption in pediatric diets has raised significant concerns regarding long-term health. This review examines evidence for a proposed 'pro-inflammatory imprint' involving the gut microbiome-inflammation axis. Using a structured narrative synthesis of pediatric observational evidence, adult intervention studies, preclinical research, multi-omics data, and public health evaluations, we examine associations between UPF exposure and metabolic, inflammatory, cognitive, and neurodevelopmental outcomes while distinguishing direct from indirect evidence.

Accelerated phase development in a late-onset adolescent Chediak-Higashi syndrome patient caused by compound novel LYST mutations in the setting of SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Chediak-Higashi syndrome (CHS) is a rare autosomal recessive genetic disorder characterized by severe immunodeficiency, albinism and coagulation deficiency. Mostly diagnosed in early childhood, this devastating condition is associated with lysosomal abnormalities attributed to the absence or impaired function of lysosomal trafficking regulator caused by mutations in the CHS1/LYST gene. In current study, we report a case of late-onset CHS caused by two novel compound heterozygous CHS1/LYST mutations: c.8407C > T, leading to early termination of translation at residue Gln2803 (p. Gln2803Ter), an

The development of intimate relationships in adolescent girls and women with traumatic brain injury: a framework to guide gender specific rehabilitation and enhance positive social outcomes.

Background: Traumatic brain injury is a neurological disorder of biopsychosocial nature influenced by sex and gender interactions across the lifespan. Traumatic brain injury sustained during adolescence can result in cognitive and social communication impairments that compromise the development and maintenance of intimate social relationships. This can increase both short and long-term vulnerability to poor mental health, social isolation, lack of meaningful friendships, exploitation, and abuse. Females with traumatic brain injury experience greater loss of confidence and have increased risk o

Body size and pubertal development explain ethnic differences in structural geometry at the femur in Asian, Hispanic, and white early adolescent girls living in the U.S.

UNLABELLED: Variation in structural geometry is present in adulthood, but when this variation arises and what influences this variation prior to adulthood remains poorly understood. Ethnicity is commonly the focus of research of skeletal integrity and appears to explain some of the variation in quantification of bone tissue. However, why ethnicity explains variation in skeletal integrity is unclear. METHODS: Here we examine predictors of bone cross sectional area (CSA) and section modulus (Z), measured using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and the Advanced Hip Analysis (AHA) program at

Sex and pubertal stage as moderators of the association between resting-state connectivity of striatal circuitry and reward sensitivity in the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study.

Altered reward sensitivity (either heightened or blunted) has been observed in a range of psychiatric disorders. Understanding neurodevelopmental pathways associated with individual differences in reward sensitivity will therefore help inform prevention and intervention efforts for a range of disorders. In this Registered Report, we used data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development℠ study (ABCD study®), from the baseline, 2-year follow-up, and 4-year follow-up waves of data collection, when participants were on average aged 10, 12, and 14 years old, respectively, to examine these pathw

Measuring state and trait anxiety in Turkish adolescents: development and validation of the six-item short forms of the state-trait anxiety inventory.

OBJECTIVE: Although the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) is a well-established instrument for anxiety assessment, its length may limit feasibility in large-scale, longitudinal, and time-sensitive research settings. Existing abbreviated forms were mainly created for adults worldwide, including Türkiye. Accordingly, this study aimed to develop and psychometrically evaluate abbreviated versions of the STAI-State (STAI-S) and STAI-Trait (STAI-T) for Turkish adolescents. METHOD: A two-phase psychometric validation design was implemented across two independent cohorts. Exploratory factor analys
