Clubfoot: its pathological anatomy.

The pathologic anatomy of clubfoot is complex, and the opportunities to examine neonatal specimens are inevitably rare. Three clubfeet were dissected and compared with a normal foot. The shape, orientation, and alignment of the bones were gauged, and tibial torsion was measured. Particular attention was paid to the "medial tie," and its etiologic role was considered.

Direct Carotid Puncture for Mechanical Thrombectomy: Technical Advances in Access and Closure.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Mechanical thrombectomy (MT) is the standard of care for patients with anterior circulation acute ischemic stroke with large-vessel occlusion and is traditionally performed through transfemoral access (TFA). In cases of difficult vascular anatomy, however, TFA may be prohibitive to achieving reperfusion in a timely manner, and alternative access methods must be used. Direct carotid puncture (DCP) has previously been described only as a bail-out access strategy fraught with complications, with inconsistent access and closure methods used. This study describes our DCP

Comparative effectiveness of virtual reality (VR) vs 3D printed models of congenital heart disease in resident and nurse practitioner educational experience.

BACKGROUND: Medical trainees frequently note that cardiac anatomy is difficult to conceive within a two dimensional framework. The specific anatomic defects and the subsequent pathophysiology in flow dynamics may become more apparent when framed in three dimensional models. Given the evidence of improved comprehension using such modeling, this study aimed to contribute further to that understanding by comparing Virtual Reality (VR) and 3D printed models (3DP) in medical education. OBJECTIVES: We sought to systematically compare the perceived subjective effectiveness of Virtual Reality (VR) an

Are the distributions of variations of circle of Willis different in different populations? - Results of an anatomical study and review of literature.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have proposed correlation between variants of the cerebral arterial circle (also known as circle of Willis) and some cerebrovascular diseases. Differences in the incidence of these diseases in different populations have also been investigated. The study of variations in the anatomy of the cerebral arterial circle may partially explain differences in the incidence of some of the cerebrovascular diseases in different ethnic or racial groups. While many studies have investigated the variations in the anatomy of each segment of the cerebral arterial circle, few have ad

Transcarotid artery revascularization outperforms transfemoral carotid artery stenting regardless of aortic arch type or degree of atherosclerosis.

OBJECTIVE: The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services now approve reimbursement for transfemoral carotid artery stenting (TFCAS) in the treatment of standard-risk patients with carotid artery occlusive disease. TFCAS in patients with complex aortic arch anatomy is known to be challenging with worse outcomes. Transcarotid artery revascularization (TCAR) could be a preferable alternative in these patients owing to avoiding the aortic arch and using flow reversal during stent deployment. We aim to compare the outcomes of TCAR vs TFCAS across all aortic arch types and degrees of arch atheroscl

Evaluation of valvular disease by cardiac computed tomography assessment.

Cardiac multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) angiography is emerging as a technique to evaluate cardiac valve structure and function. MDCT can provide insights into cardiac valve anatomy and pathologic states, including comparable efficacy in valve area and regurgitant orifice area assessment compared with echocardiography and magnetic resonance imaging. MDCT can also be useful when initial evaluation of valvular disease with echocardiography yields suboptimal images. MDCT provides concurrent visualization of coronary anatomy which may avoid the need for further invasive preoperative testi

The muscles of the infrapubic abdominal wall of a 6-month-old Crocodylus niloticus (Reptilia: Crocodylia).

The muscles of the infrapubic abdominal wall of crocodilians play an important role in their ventilatory mechanism. Yet the anatomy and homology of these muscles is poorly understood. To gain new insights into the anatomy of the crocodilian infrapubic abdominal wall, we dissected a specimen of Crocodylus niloticus. Origin and insertion of the muscles, as well as their arrangement relative to each other was examined in great detail. The findings were compared with those of other crocodilian taxa to detect potential variability of the muscles of interest. The homology of the muscles was studied

From atlas to sacrum: Morphological and morphometric characterization of the feline vertebral canal using computed tomography.

The vertebral canal plays a critical role in protecting the spinal cord and maintaining biomechanical stability. Although the vertebral canal has been extensively studied in dogs, equivalent analyses in cats are limited. This study provides a comprehensive morphological and morphometric assessment of the feline vertebral canal from atlas (C1) to sacrum (Sc) using computed tomography (CT). In 35 cats, predominantly European Shorthairs, cross-sectional area (CSA) and perimeter (P) were determined at cranial, central, and caudal levels of each vertebra. Vertebral canal circularity (CVC) was calcu

Technical Challenges and Surgical Considerations in Sacrospinous Ligament Fixation for Apical Prolapse Repair.

Background/Objectives: Sacrospinous ligament fixation (SSLF) is a well-established native tissue vaginal procedure for uterine/vault prolapse. Despite favorable success rates, the procedure presents technical challenges due to the deep operative field and proximity to critical neurovascular structures. To review current evidence regarding anatomical considerations, surgical technique, fixation strategies, suture materials, device-assisted methods, and perioperative complications in SSLF. Methods: A structured narrative review of the contemporary literature was conducted, focusing on comparativ

Treatment of Large-Diameter Truncal Veins: A Structured Review of Contemporary Endovenous and Surgical Modalities.

Truncal vein insufficiency can be treated with endovenous thermal ablation (EVTA), non-thermal non-tumescent techniques, ultrasound-guided foam or microfoam sclerotherapy, and high ligation with stripping. However, the optimal management of large-diameter truncal veins remains unclear. This structured review summarizes treatment outcomes in large-diameter incompetent truncal veins and compares available modalities according to vein diameter, anatomical success, recurrence, reintervention, and complications. A PubMed/MEDLINE search was performed for studies published between January 2000 and Ju

Clinical value of robot-assisted catheter navigation for cardiac electrophysiology ablation: current evidence and future directions.

The success of catheter ablation depends not only on identification of arrhythmia mechanisms, mapping, and energy strategy, but also on catheter accessibility and stable manipulation. Robot-assisted catheter navigation enables remote control through magnetic fields, robotic sheaths, or mechanical actuation. However, with the development of three-dimensional electroanatomic mapping, low- and zero-fluoroscopy workflows, and newer ablation technologies, the key question has shifted from technical feasibility to whether these systems can overcome practical procedural constraints in specific clinic

Fitting photosynthetic carbon dioxide and irradiance response curves for C4 leaves.

Gas exchange measurements provide crucial insights into the complex mechanisms of photosynthesis. Responses of CO2 assimilation rate (A) to intercellular CO2 partial pressure (Ci) and irradiance (I) link gas exchange measurements to the underlying photosynthetic biochemistry of a leaf. The unique biochemistry and leaf anatomy which distinguish C4 photosynthesis make it necessary to apply models and fitting routines which appropriately parameterize and incorporate these characteristics. Here we provide updates to the C4 photosynthesis model by improving the parameterization of cyclic electron f

Comparison of Corn and Rice Sensitivity to Cyanobacterial Extract and Anatoxin-a in Soil and Hydroponic Media.

Cyanobacterial toxins (cyanotoxins) produced in harmful algal blooms are toxic to eukaryotic cells. Plants exposed to cyanotoxins through irrigation can accumulate toxins and have decreased yields, so an understanding of the effects of cyanotoxins on major crop plants is important. Although the effects of some cyanotoxins on growth and photosynthesis of common agricultural crops have been studied, how cyanotoxin uptake may be impacted by differences in root anatomy has not been studied. Hence, we exposed corn and rice, plants lacking and possessing a constitutively well-developed root exodermi

Automated multi-objective pedicle screw planning.

BACKGROUND: Posterior spinal fusion is a common procedure, but manual pedicle screw planning is time-consuming, cognitively demanding, and may not fully leverage patient-specific anatomy. Pedicle screws are vulnerable to loosening, a complication linked to poor anchorage. This study aimed to develop and evaluate an automated pedicle screw planning framework for multi-level fusion, designed to simultaneously optimize clinical safety, biomechanical stability, and screw head alignment. METHODS: The proposed automated screw planning workflow was compared with clinical standard manual planning on

Robotic versus laparoscopic resection for transverse colon and splenic flexure cancer: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Transverse colon and splenic flexure cancer resections are technically demanding because of variable vascular anatomy, multiquadrant dissection, and proximity to the pancreas and spleen. This systematic review and meta-analysis compared robotic and laparoscopic outcomes and separately summarized published robotic experience. MEDLINE/PubMed, Embase/Ovid, Scopus, and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews were searched through 18 July 2026. Six non-randomized comparative studies included 167 robotic and 296 laparoscopic patients. Overall morbidity (risk ratio [RR] 1.02, 95% confidence inter

The tiger salamander as a promising alternative model organism to the axolotl for fracture healing and regenerative biology research.

Scientists have been captivated by the ability to regenerate, focusing on uncovering the mechanisms of epimorphic regeneration and applying them to human medicine. The axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum) has become the most intensively studied model in tetrapod regeneration research, particularly concerning limb regeneration. This research has provided significant insights into signaling pathways and factors regulating limb regeneration. However, most regeneration studies focus on controlled, surgical amputation experiments under strict laboratory conditions. This practice has limited the available
