BACKGROUND: Zoonotic diseases such as brucellosis, Rift Valley fever, anthrax, rabies and bovine tuberculosis are highly prevalent among pastoralist communities in low-and middle-income countries.
METHODS: This study adopts a One Health approach, employing a range of participatory methods including informal observations, "go-along interviews," narrative-, and key informant- interviews, to explore the cultural, behavioral, and structural drivers of zoonotic disease transmission among pastoralist communities in East Africa. We unpack how the physical environment, socio-economic systems, health

UNLABELLED: Biotelemetry networks have transformed our capacity to study the movements and ecology of aquatic animals, yet their development has been geographically uneven over time. While North America and Australia (among others) already hosted mature, well-coordinated infrastructures in the early 2000s, Europe has long lacked a formal framework for collaboration. The European Tracking Network (ETN) emerged in 2017 as a grassroots response to this gap. Since then, ETN has grown tremendously and has become a sustainable network with a central data system and research infrastructure installed

INTRODUCTION: In addition to the commonly accepted importance of the vampire bat in the maintenance and transmission of the rabies virus (RABV) in South America, RABV infection of other species is widely evidenced, challenging their role in the viral cycle.
METHODOLOGY / PRINCIPLES FINDINGS: To identify the bioecological drivers of RABV circulation in neotropical bat communities, we conducted a molecular and serological survey on almost 1,000 bats from 30 species, and a 4-year longitudinal survey in two colonies of vampire bats in French Guiana. RABV was molecularly detected in a common vampi

An introduction of a foreign animal disease (FAD) could greatly harm the United States' (U.S.) swine industry and cost billions of dollars in losses. Private and public stakeholders have invested heavily in the development of programs to educate swine producers about FAD threats, but their reach to small-scale and non-intensive farmers may be limited. In the U.S., there is a significant contingent of farmers that fall under a wide variety of farm practices, such as small-scale, pasture-raised, and homesteaders. We postulate that research and outreach with these farmers poses unique challenges

Influenza A viruses (IAVs) remain a persistent global threat because of rapid antigenic change, frequent genetic reassortment, and cross-species transmission. Swine act as key "mixing vessels," permitting co-infection with avian and human strains and accelerating viral diversification and zoonotic risk. Effective veterinary surveillance is therefore critical for detecting viral evolution within swine populations and for providing early warning at the animal-human interface. Taiwan, home to approximately 5.5 million pigs and 23.4 million people, offers a representative case for examining how sw

Chemical modification of naturally derived glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) expands their potential utility for applications in soft tissue repair and regenerative medicine. Here we report the preparation of a novel crosslinked chondroitin sulfate (~200 to 2000 kilodaltons) that is both soluble in aqueous solution and microfilterable. We refer to these materials as "SuperGAGs." One can further conjugate these materials with diverse capture agents to further modify polymer properties and add new capabilities. A representative material (GLX-100) demonstrated durable restoration of bladder impermeabilit

Proteolytic cell surface release ('shedding') of the prion protein (PrP), a broadly expressed GPI-anchored glycoprotein, by the metalloprotease ADAM10 impacts on neurodegenerative and other diseases in animal and in vitro models. Recent studies employing the latter also suggest shed PrP (sPrP) to be a ligand in intercellular communication and critically involved in PrP-associated physiological tasks. Although expectedly an evolutionary conserved event, and while soluble forms of PrP are present in human tissues and body fluids, for the human body neither proteolytic PrP shedding and its cleava

BACKGROUND: Plasma extracellular vesicles (pEV) can harbor a diverse array of factors including active proteases and the amyloid-precursor-protein (APP) cleavage product Aβ, involved in plaque formation in Alzheimer`s diseases (AD). A potential role of such vesicles in AD pathology is unexplored.
METHODS: In a case-control study of randomly selected patients with AD and other neurological diseases (n = 14), and healthy controls (n = 7), we systematically analyzed the content of pEV, using different assay systems. In addition, we determined their entry path into brain tissue, employing animal

Autism is a pervasive developmental disorder, with characteristics including impairments in reciprocal social interaction, impaired communication, and repetitive/stereotyped behaviors. Despite decades of research, the etiology of autism remains elusive. Thus, it is important that we pursue all avenues, in attempting to understand this complicated disorder. One such avenue is the development of animal models. While autism may be uniquely human, there are behavioral characteristics of the disorder that can be established in animal models. Evidence supports a genetic component for this disorder,

We developed a new animal model to recreate the condition of an open fracture in communication with the maxillary sinus. We then studied wound healing of the sinus wall structures following fracture in the presence of an alloplastic implant. This model is designed to simulate the alloplastic repair of an orbital floor fracture in humans. The New Zealand White rabbit was used as the animal model. Standardized 8-mm defects were made bilaterally in the maxillary sinuses to include bone and mucosa in 21 rabbits. Two different implants were placed in the soft-tissue pockets to obturate the defects,

We report on the long-distance movements of subadult female buffalo within a Transfrontier Conservation Area in Africa. Our observations confirm that bovine tuberculosis and other diseases can spread between buffalo populations across national parks, community land, and countries, thus posing a risk to animal and human health in surrounding wildlife areas.

Exposure to carbon nanotubes may hinder animal growth. Gut microbiota is closely associated with lipid metabolism in animals, yet its role in the growth impairment of fish induced by carbon nanotubes remains unclear. In this study, juvenile goldfish (Carassius auratus) was exposed to 0-1000 μg/L carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT-COOH) for four weeks to find the correlations between gut microbial community and the induced toxicities. MWCNT-COOH was found to induce histopathological and oxidative damages to liver. The weight of fish body and liver decreased after the MWCNT-COOH e

The gastrointestinal tract (GIT) hosts a complex and abundant microbial ecosystem that is essential for maintaining animal health and optimizing production performance. However, most studies have been confined to individual intestinal segments, underscoring the need for a more holistic understanding of microbial communities across various GIT segments in animals, including Pekin ducks which is important to global poultry meat production. Here, we conducted 16S rRNA sequencing to characterize the microbial landscape along four GIT segments in 313 Pekin ducks (raised with commercial diet) and co

Drinking water distribution systems (DWDSs) represent an ideal environment for biofilm formation, which can harbor pathogenic and antimicrobial-resistant bacteria. This study aimed to assess longitudinally the microbial community composition and antimicrobial resistance (AMR), as determined by 16S rRNA NGS and qPCR, respectively, in drinking water (DW) and biofilm from DWDSs, as well as faeces, of free-range organic broiler farms. The role of DWDSs in AMR gene (ARG) dissemination within the farm environment and transmission to animals, was also assessed. DW and biofilm microbial communities di

Many animals communicate acoustically in large social aggregations. Among the best studied are frogs, in which males form large breeding choruses where they produce loud vocalizations to attract mates. Although chorus noise poses significant challenges to communication, it also possesses features, such as comodulation in amplitude fluctuations, that listeners may be evolutionarily adapted to exploit in order to achieve release from masking. This study investigated the extent to which the benefits of comodulation masking release (CMR) depend on overall noise level in Cope's gray treefrog (Hyla

Psyllids, or jumping plant lice (Hemiptera: Sternorrhyncha: Psylloidea), are a group of small phytophagous insects that include some important pests of crops worldwide. Sexual communication of psyllids occurs via vibrations transmitted through host plants, which play an important role in mate recognition and localization. The signals are species-specific and can be used to aid in psyllid taxonomy and pest control. Several hypotheses have been proposed for the mechanism that generates these vibrations, of which stridulation, that is, friction between parts of the forewing and thorax, has receiv

Courtship in Drosophila melanogaster has become an iconic example of an innate and interactive series of behaviors. The female signals her acceptance of copulation by becoming immobile in response to a male's display of stereotyped actions. The male and female communicate via vision, air-borne sounds, and pheromones, but what triggers the female's immobility is undetermined. Here, we describe an overlooked and important component of Drosophila courtship. Video recordings and laser vibrometry show that the male abdomen shakes ("quivers"), generating substrate-borne vibrations at about six pulse

Sensitivity to substrate-borne vibrations is widespread in animals and evolutionarily precedes hearing but, compared with other sensory modalities, we know little about vibrational communication, particularly in vertebrates. For plant-dwelling arthropods, vibrations are likely as important as sound. Arboreal vertebrates excite plant vibrations with most movements, but the behavioral relevance of these vibrations has not been tested experimentally. In playback experiments using a robotic model frog and an electrodynamic shaker, we demonstrate that plant-borne vibrations generated by the shaking
