Involvement of the autonomic nervous system in Parkinson's disease (PD) demonstrates the multiple system character of this disease exceeding the extrapyramidal system. Forty to sixty percent of patients with PD suffer from symptoms of autonomic failure impairing their quality of life. Autonomic failure in PD is caused by damage to the postganglionic part of the autonomic nervous system. Scintigraphy with radiolabeled metaiodobenzylguanidin (MIBG) provides evidence of autonomic involvement at an early stage of the disease and enables an early differential diagnosis of PD versus other neurodegen…

Even though congestive heart failure is extremely common, the mechanisms responsible for the clinical manifestations remain a puzzle. The central and autonomic (sympathetic) nervous systems are responsible for a large part of the clinical manifestations. The role of the nervous system in CHF is discussed briefly. It is evident that there are many gaps in knowledge that remain concerning the role of the central, peripheral, and autonomic nervous systems in congestive heart failure. The peripheral vascular constriction, increase in venous tone and pressure, tachycardia, sweating, dermal pallor, …

Autonomic nervous system imbalances are implicated in the genesis of cardiovascular systemic effects of brain disorders. With many potentially lethal cardiovascular problems, sympathetic predominance over parasympathetic stimuli prevails. Autonomic nervous system imbalances may be caused not only by over-activity or depression of either the sympathetic or parasympathetic nervous systems but also by unchanged activity of one and depression or overactivity of the other. Because the autonomic nervous system has representation in all levels of the brain, it becomes apparent why diverse brain disor…

The autonomic nervous system imbalance caused by the overactivation of the sympathetic nerve and the weakened activity of the parasympathetic nerve is closely related to the occurrence and development of myocardial infarction.Autonomic nerve regulation is a new therapeutic approach aiming at inhibiting sympathetic activity and increasing parasympathetic activity. It encompasses magnetic nerve stimulation, optogenetic neuromodulation, and microinjection of botulinum toxin, which could promote the rebalance of the autonomic nervous system, thereby curbing the deterioration of the cardiac function and…

The association of orthostatic hypotension with signs of progressive neuronal degeneration of the central nervous system particularly affecting the autonomic nervous system is known as the Shy-Drager syndrome. The pathological hallmark of the disease is cell loss in the intermediolateral column of the spinal cord, which is responsible for the major element in the autonomic failure. There is also evidence that widespread involvement of the dopaminergic system may be responsible for the autonomic as well as the parkinsonian features encountered.

Vibration disease due to hand-held vibratory tools has various symptoms and signs which can be characterized by the severity. They include disorders of the central and autonomic nervous systems, as well as peripheral system disorders. The mechanism of Raynaud's phenomenon in vibration disease is proposed to be: Vibration and cold affect the local vessels and nerves directly, leading to enhanced release of chemical vasoconstrictors. Vibration, noise, cold, ergonomic and biodynamic conditions, and emotional stress during work result in disorders of the central and autonomic nervous systems. In t…

400 sleep-apnoeic patients with an intact autonomic nervous system underwent twenty-four-hour electrocardiography with simultaneous polygraphy recording at night. At onset of sleep apnoea all showed progressive bradycardia, followed by abrupt tachycardia on resumption of breathing. The electrocardiographic pattern, which is identifiable by computer analysis, can be used as a screening tool for sleep apnoea; it was not seen in controls without sleep apnoea syndrome. A subgroup of patients with sleep apnoea and impairment of autonomic nervous control of the heart (heart transplants, autonomic ne…

Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is an acute demyelinating disorder of the peripheral nervous system that results in motor weakness, absent reflexes and autonomic nervous system dysfunction. Autonomic failure is reported in approximately 65 % of patients with GBS and usually follows extensive motor involvement. In this case our patient presented with syncope and other signs of autonomic failure before the motor weakness developed. Few cases in the literature have reported features of autonomic failure before established weakness in GBS; to our knowledge, syncope has not been described previously …

Neurogenic cardiac syndromes (NCS) encompass cardiac rhythm, functional, and hemodynamic abnormalities triggered or amplified by neurologic injury, autonomic dysfunction, or stress-related central nervous system activation. This article summarizes the brain-heart axis, shared mechanisms including sympathetic overactivation, vagal withdrawal, impaired heart rate variability and baroreflex sensitivity, neuroinflammation, endothelial dysfunction, and myocardial stunning, and proposes a practical classification framework. Acute brain injury-related, seizure-related, chronic autonomic failure-relat

BACKGROUND: We have recently confirmed that non-pain autonomic dysfunction symptoms occur in fibromyalgia and can be assessed with the 31-item Composite Autonomic Symptom Score (COMPASS 31) instrument. Fibromyalgia patients have been found to have higher scores than matched controls across all six domains of this instrument.
OBJECTIVES: To analyse the principal components of the autonomic COMPASS 31 domain scores in fibromyalgia patients to understand better the fundamental dimensions of dysautonomia in this disorder.
METHODS: A principal component analysis of fibromyalgia autonomic domain s

Nurses represent the largest sector of the healthcare workforce, and it is established that they are faced with ongoing physical and mental demands that leave many continuously stressed. In turn, this chronic stress may affect cardiac autonomic activity, which can be non-invasively evaluated using heart rate variability (HRV). The association between neurocognitive parameters during acute stress situations and HRV has not been previously explored in nurses compared to non-nurses and such, our study aimed to assess these differences. Neurocognitive data were obtained using the Mini-Mental State

Harlequin syndrome is a rare condition, presenting with unilateral facial flushing and hyperhidrosis in response to physical exercise, heat or emotional stressors and has scarcely been reported in pediatric patients. It is caused by a dysfunction of vasomotor and sudomotor sympathetic fiber activity inhibiting the ability to flush on the affected side, causing the neurologically intact side to appear red. We present three pediatric cases of this uncommon syndrome, each of them of different origin and displaying distinct associated (neurological) symptoms, and review medical literature. Insight

Sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP) is a major cause of epilepsy-related mortality. SUDEP is highly linked to seizures, with most deaths occurring after convulsive seizures in sleep. In most cases of SUDEP, convulsive seizures appear to directly trigger catastrophic cardiorespiratory dysfunction leading to death. In the last few decades, many pathophysiological mechanisms have been proposed to explain the sequence of events leading to death. Patients with epilepsy often have underlying autonomic dysfunction, as measured by heart rate variability and other testing modalities. Additional
