Virtual Reality Air Travel Training with Children on the Autism Spectrum: A Preliminary Report.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is categorized by deficits in social communication and interaction, alongside repetitive, restrictive behaviors or interests (RRBIs). Previous research supports the efficacy of virtual reality (VR) to train a variety of specific skills (i.e., riding a bus or crossing the street) as well as more complex social skills, such as emotion recognition and functional communication. The present reports the implementation of a VR-based air travel functional communication activity in five children diagnosed with ASD. Using an iPhone X and Google Cardboard device, researcher

Rapid and reproducible characterization of sickling during automated deoxygenation in sickle cell disease patients.

In sickle cell disease (SCD), sickle hemoglobin (HbS) polymerizes upon deoxygenation, resulting in sickling of red blood cells (RBCs). These sickled RBCs have strongly reduced deformability, leading to vaso-occlusive crises and chronic hemolytic anemia. To date, there are no reliable laboratory parameters or assays capable of predicting disease severity or monitoring treatment effects. We here report on the oxygenscan, a newly developed method to measure RBC deformability (expressed as Elongation Index - EI) as a function of pO2 . Upon a standardized, 22 minute, automated cycle of deoxygenatio

Novel Atraumatic End-to-Side Repair Model Exhibits Robust Collateral Sprouting Independent of Donor Fiber Injury.

BACKGROUND: A central issue underlying end-to-side neurorrhaphy technique is whether injury to the donor nerve fibers is necessary for successful reinnervation of the recipient nerve. To address this question, the authors developed a novel atraumatic end-to-side neurorrhaphy model that uses the preexisting anatomical structure of the median nerve as the Y-chamber to study the mechanism of collateral sprouting. METHODS: In this rat forelimb model, the authors transected the musculocutaneous nerve and the lateral head of the median nerve, and coapted their distal stumps together. In this model,

Effects of sleep deprivation on pain-related factors in the temporomandibular joint.

BACKGROUND: The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of experimental sleep deprivation (SD) on the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) in rats by examining pain-related factors and to determine the possible involvement of estrogen and NF (nuclear factor) κB signaling in the TMJ synovial membrane. METHODS: The influence of SD, conducted in rats using the modified multiple platform method, was estimated by observing behavioral manifestations and examining changes in serum hormone levels. The morphologic changes of synovial tissue were observed with light microscopy and the serum lev

In vivo oxidation and surface damage in retrieved ethylene oxide-sterilized total knee arthroplasties.

BACKGROUND: Gas sterilization (eg, ethylene oxide [EtO] and gas plasma) was introduced for polyethylene to reduce oxidation due to free radicals occurring during radiation sterilization. Recently, oxidation has been observed in polyethylenes with undetectable levels of free radicals, which were expected to be oxidatively stable. It is unclear whether in vivo oxidation will occur in unirradiated inserts sterilized with EtO. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: We analyzed the oxidation, mechanical behavior, and surface damage mechanisms of tibial inserts of a single design sterilized using EtO. METHODS: We co

Neural mobilization reverses behavioral and cellular changes that characterize neuropathic pain in rats.

BACKGROUND: The neural mobilization technique is a noninvasive method that has proved clinically effective in reducing pain sensitivity and consequently in improving quality of life after neuropathic pain. The present study examined the effects of neural mobilization (NM) on pain sensitivity induced by chronic constriction injury (CCI) in rats. The CCI was performed on adult male rats, submitted thereafter to 10 sessions of NM, each other day, starting 14 days after the CCI injury. Over the treatment period, animals were evaluated for nociception using behavioral tests, such as tests for allod

Amygdala activity in obsessive-compulsive disorder with contamination fear: a study with oxygen-15 water positron emission tomography.

Previous imaging studies of obsessive-compulsive symptom states have implicated frontal-striatal and limbic regions in the pathophysiology of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Functional imaging studies, however, have yielded inconsistent results, presumably due to methodological differences (patient inclusion criteria, stimulus paradigm, imaging technique, and absence of control groups). In the present study, randomized presentation of contamination-related and neutral visual stimuli was used to investigate the neurophysiological correlates of contamination fear in a group of medication-fr

Cervicomedullary intrathecal injection of morphine produces antinociception in the orofacial formalin test in the rat.

BACKGROUND: High cervical and medullary drug delivery has been advocated for the treatment of refractory head and neck pain in humans. Currently, parallel models in animals have not been developed to support this methodology. We combined an accepted animal model of pain of cranial origin with a novel technique of neuraxial drug delivery to address this issue. METHODS: Male Wistar rats were implanted with intrathecal catheters that were advanced cephalad through a lumbar guide cannula to the high cervical spinal cord. The orofacial formalin test was used to assess antinociception. Vehicle or m

Course of thyroid nodules.

Thyroid nodules are present in up to 30% of the German population. The causative role of iodine deficiency which is still endemic in this country has long been established. Recent progress has shed some light on the pathogenesis of nodular thyroid disease which still remains less well understood than goitrogenesis. Most thyroid nodules appear to be of clonal origin. Functional abnormalities have been related to alterations within the TSH signaling cascade, particularly mutations in the TSH receptor and stimulating G-protein-alpha-subunit. Proliferation which is dissociable from thyroid functio

Stimulation of neuropeptide Y overflow in the rat paraventricular nucleus by corticotropin-releasing factor.

Neuropeptide Y (NPY) and corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) are present at high concentrations in the hypothalamus where they mediate important endocrine and autonomic functions. Morphological and physiological studies have suggested an interaction between these peptides, and opposing actions of CRF and NPY have been reported on feeding and other behaviors. This study investigated the effect of CRF on NPY release in vivo, measured by push-pull techniques, in the anesthetized rat. Push-pull probes implanted into the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus (PVN) were perfused with modified

Serum amylase and lipase concentrations and lipase/amylase ratio in assessment of etiology and severity of acute pancreatitis.

We studied the behavior of serum amylase and lipase in 66 consecutive patients with acute pancreatitis in order to assess the ability of these tests and of the serum lipase-amylase ratio to establish the etiology and predict the severity of acute pancreatitis. Forty-two patients had biliary acute pancreatitis, 14 had alcoholic acute pancreatitis, and the remaining 10 nonbiliary, nonalcoholic (NBNA) acute pancreatitis. Serum amylase and lipase were abnormally high in all patients. The elevations of both serum amylase and lipase were significantly lower in patients with alcoholic pancreatitis th

Gamification in Apps and Technologies for Improving Mental Health and Well-Being: Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: There is little research on the application of gamification to mental health and well-being. Furthermore, usage of gamification-related terminology is inconsistent. Current applications of gamification for health and well-being have also been critiqued for adopting a behaviorist approach that relies on positive reinforcement and extrinsic motivators. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to analyze current applications of gamification for mental health and well-being by answering 3 research questions (RQs). RQ1: which gamification elements are most commonly applied to apps and technologies

Kinetic and Apparent Thermodynamic Analysis of Phaseolus Vulgaris Leucoagglutinin Binding to Cell-Surface Glycans in SR Lymphoma Cells Using a Fixation-Modified Cell-ELISA.

Cell-surface glycosylation plays an important role in lectin-mediated molecular recognition and is frequently altered in malignant cells. In this study, a fixation-modified cell-ELISA was developed to enable stable immobilization of non-adherent cells and to compare the binding behavior of Phaseolus vulgaris leucoagglutinin (PHA-L) toward SR lymphoma cells and normal human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs). Saturation binding and time-course assays were performed at 5, 15, 25, and 37 °C, and the resulting whole-cell ELISA data were analyzed using Langmuir, Van't Hoff, Arrhenius, and E

Study on the mesoscopic failure and fractal characteristics of concrete with holes and cracks.

This study investigates the influence of concrete's mesoscopic heterogeneity and internal defects on its mesoscopic mechanical behavior and macroscopic nonlinear response. Using defective concrete as a model system, the research systematically examines the impact of mesoscopic heterogeneity on fracture processes and damage evolution. This is accomplished through an integrated approach combining micro-CT scanning, digital image processing, physical experiments, and numerical simulations. Fractal dimension analysis is then employed to provide an in-depth characterization of mesoscopic damage evo

Alterations of the Hippocampal Networks in Valproic Acid-Induced Rat Autism Model.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is one of the most frequently diagnosed neurodevelopmental disorders, characterized among others by impairments in social interactions and repetitive behavior. According to one of the leading hypotheses about its origin, ASD is caused by the imbalance of excitatory and inhibitory circuit activity. ASD-related morphological and functional changes can be observed in several brain regions i.e., in the prefrontal cortex and the hippocampus. It is well-established that prenatal valproic-acid (VPA) exposure of rats on day 12.5 leads to neurodevelopmental alterations wi

Germinal center formation, immunoglobulin production and hindlimb nociceptive sensitization after tibia fracture.

Emerging evidence suggests that Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) is in part a post-traumatic autoimmune disease mediated by an adaptive immune response after limb injuries. We previously observed in a murine tibial fracture model of CRPS that pain-related behaviors were dependent upon adaptive immune mechanisms including the neuropeptide-dependent production of IgM for 5 months after injury. However, the time course of induction of this immune response and the demonstration of germinal center formation in lymphoid organs has not been evaluated. Using the murine fracture model, we employed

Comparing continuum and direct fiber models of soft tissues: An ocular biomechanics example reveals that continuum models may artificially disrupt the strains at both the tissue and fiber levels.

Collagen fibers are the main load-bearing component of soft tissues but difficult to incorporate into models. Whilst simplified homogenization models suffice for some applications, a thorough mechanistic understanding requires accurate prediction of fiber behavior, including both detailed fiber-level strains and long-distance transmission. Our goal was to compare the performance of a continuum model of the optic nerve head (ONH) built using conventional techniques with a fiber model we recently introduced which explicitly incorporates the complex 3D organization and interaction of collagen fib

Dioptric differences between clinically determined and metric-optimised refractions for adults with Down syndrome.

PURPOSE: Refractions based on the optimisation of single-value wavefront-derived metrics may help determine appropriate corrections for individuals with Down syndrome where clinical techniques fall short. This study compared dioptric differences between refractions obtained using standard clinical techniques and two metric-optimised methods: visual Strehl ratio (VSX) and pupil fraction tessellated (PFSt), and investigated characteristics that may contribute to the differences between refraction types. METHODS: Thirty adults with Down syndrome (age = 29 ± 10 years) participated. Three refracti

Investigation of the Interaction Between Human Serum Albumin and Two Drugs as Binary and Ternary Systems.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Human serum albumin (HSA) is the most frequent protein in blood plasma. Albumin transports various compounds, preserves osmotic pressure, and buffers pH. A unique feature of albumin is its ability to bind drugs and other bioactive molecules. However, it is important to consider binary and ternary systems of two pharmaceuticals to estimate the effect of the first drug on the second one and physicochemical properties. METHODS: Different techniques including time-resolved, second-derivative and anisotropy fluorescence spectroscopy, resonance light scattering (RLS), cri

Understanding the Working Mechanism of the Novel HKUST-1@BPS Composite Materials as Stationary Phases for Liquid Chromatography.

Composite materials have been used based on coordination polymers or microporous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) combined with mesoporous matrices for adsorption-related techniques, which enable outflanking some adverse phenomena manifested during pristine components operation and enhance the performance and selectivity of the resulting materials. In this work, for the first time, the novel HKUST-1@BPS composites synthesized by the microwave-assisted (MW) technique starting from microporous HKUST-1 (Cu3(btc)2) MOF and biporous silica matrix (BPS) with bimodal mesopore size distribution were co
