Emotion regulation facets prospectively distinguish food addiction from substance misuse in women with binge eating, gambling, or both behaviours.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the degree of similarity between food addiction (FA) and substance addictions (SA), we prospectively compared emotion regulation deficits associated with FA and alcohol or drug misuse in women with binge eating, gambling, or both behaviours. METHOD: Participants were 202 community-recruited women who engaged in at-risk binge eating (39 %), at-risk gambling (18 %), or both (43 %). Participants completed online assessments every two months for six months. The baseline and six-month surveys assessed self-reported emotion regulation using the Difficulties in Emotion Regula

Ethanol and its Nonoxidative Metabolites Promote Acute Liver Injury by Inducing ER Stress, Adipocyte Death, and Lipolysis.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Binge drinking in patients with metabolic syndrome accelerates the development of alcohol-associated liver disease. However, the underlying mechanisms remain elusive. We investigated if oxidative and nonoxidative alcohol metabolism pathways, diet-induced obesity, and adipose tissues influenced the development of acute liver injury in a single ethanol binge model. METHODS: A single ethanol binge was administered to chow-fed or high-fat diet (HFD)-fed wild-type and genetically modified mice. RESULTS: Oral administration of a single dose of ethanol induced acute liver injury …

A dual mechanism fully blocks ethanol relapse: Role of vagal innervation.

Previous studies showed that vagotomy markedly inhibits alcohol self-administration. Present studies hypothesised that vagotomy significantly adds to the inhibition of alcohol relapse induced by drugs that reduce the alcohol-induced hyperglutamatergic state (e.g., N-acetylcysteine + acetylsalicylic acid). The alcohol relapse paradigm tested gauges the elevated alcohol intake observed in animals that had consumed ethanol chronically, were subjected to a prolonged alcohol deprivation and are subsequently allowed ethanol re-access. Ethanol-drinker rats (UChB) were exposed to 10% and 20% ethanol a

Sex-related differences in young binge drinkers on the neurophysiological response to stress in virtual reality.

BACKGROUND: Stress is one of the main environmental factors involved in the onset of different psychopathologies. In youth, stressful life events can trigger inappropriate and health-damaging behaviors, such as binge drinking. This behavior, in turn, can lead to long-lasting changes in the neurophysiological response to stress and the development of psychological disorders late in life, e.g., alcohol use disorder. Our aim was to analyze the pattern of neurophysiological responses triggered with the exposition to a stressful virtual environment in young binge drinkers. METHODS: AUDIT-3 (third …

Fulminant Hepatic Failure in the Course of an Outpatient Anesthetic Procedure: Sevoflurane among Other High-Risk Factors.

A 20-year-old man underwent an outpatient general anesthetic procedure with sevoflurane for the correction of a bilateral gynecomastia. The patient had been first exposed to sevoflurane two years before, without any complication. He presented an overweight with a body mass index (BMI) of 31.4 kg/m2 and had an episode of "binge" drinking a few days before anesthesia. He became icteric from postoperative day 9, and after the worsening of liver function tests, the liver biopsy revealed centrilobular necrosis. The patient became encephalopathic and required urgent liver transplantation on postoper

Correlates of HIV Risk-taking Behaviors among African-American College Students: HIV Knowledge and Ethnic Identity.

We examined ethnic identity in relation to hazardous alcohol use, illicit drug use, and risky sexual behavior in 266 college students recruited on the campus of a historically Black college/university (HBCU). Participants were primarily African American students participating in HIV education and prevention outreach efforts. Data regarding prevalence of substance use, binge drinking, and sexual risk behaviors are reported. Results found no relationship among the risk variables and ethnic identity. HIV knowledge score results demonstrated a need to continue HIV education to include the less pub…

Modeling alcohol's effects on organs in animal models.

Researchers have developed numerous animal models to investigate the development of various alcohol-related diseases. Such models have provided insights into the mechanism through which alcohol can induce liver damage. Animal models also have helped researchers explore the mechanisms by which both short-term (e.g., binge) and long-term drinking can interfere with the function of the heart, a condition referred to as alcoholic cardiomyopathy. Furthermore, animal models have provided substantial information on the causes of fetal alcohol syndrome. Such models have demonstrated that exposure to a

[Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) – diagnosis, neuropsychological assessment, and symptom-orientated therapy].

According to the GEDA study (Study of Health in Germany), 20 % of all pregnant women show moderate and 8 % risky alcohol consumption. Of the pregnant women, 12 % engage in binge drinking (≥ 5 drinks per occasion less than once per month, 4 % every month and 0.1 % at least every week). According to conservative estimates, approximately 1 % of all children are affected by intrauterine exposure to alcohol. In total, approximately 800,000 million people, thereof 130,000 children, suffer from a fetal alcohol spectrum disorder in Germany. Many of the affected children, however, remain undiagnosed or…

[Diagnosis of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders].

Prenatal alcohol exposure may cause decreased growth of the child, congenital abnormalities, specific facial characteristics, and, most importantly, mental retardation and behavioural disorders, all known as fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD). A significant number of pregnant women in the Netherlands drink alcohol, but the prevalence of FASD in our country is unknown. Repeated and high peak blood alcohol concentrations, for example in the case of binge drinking by the mother, result in more severe abnormalities; a safe limit for alcohol consumption in pregnancy cannot be defined. In 2007 …

Prospective associations between stressors and alcohol use from early adolescence to young adulthood in Mexican-origin youth in the United States.

Stressors experienced across multiple domains (e.g., family and peers) may contribute to alcohol use trajectories; however, little is known about the longitudinal links between stressors and alcohol use among Latinx youth. Guided by prior work on stressors and alcohol use, the present study used longitudinal data to examine whether Mexican-origin adolescents' (N = 674; 50% female; 28% Mexico born; 72% U.S. born) experiences of family and peer stressors across early to middle adolescence (Mage = 10.86, SDage = 0.51) predicted trajectories of alcohol use frequency and binge drinking from middle …

[GABAB receptor as therapeutic target for drug addiction: from baclofen to positive allosteric modulators].

The present paper summarizes experimental and clinical data indicating the therapeutic potential of the GABAB receptor agonist, baclofen, in the treatment of alcohol use disorder (AUD) and substance use disorder (SUD). Multiple preclinical studies have demonstrated the ability of baclofen to suppress alcohol drinking (including binge- and relapse-like drinking), oral alcohol self-administration, and intravenous self-administration of cocaine, nicotine, amphetamine, methamphetamine, morphine, and heroin in rodents. Some randomized, controlled trials (RCTs) and case reports support the efficacy
