Anatomy and bronchoscopy of the porcine lung. A model for translational respiratory medicine.

The porcine model has contributed significantly to biomedical research over many decades. The similar size and anatomy of pig and human organs make this model particularly beneficial for translational research in areas such as medical device development, therapeutics and xenotransplantation. In recent years, a major limitation with the porcine model was overcome with the successful generation of gene-targeted pigs and the publication of the pig genome. As a result, the role of this model is likely to become even more important. For the respiratory medicine field, the similarities between pig a…

Mapping ongoing European research activities examining the infectious aetiology of chronic conditions.

Chronic conditions contribute to the majority of the mortality and morbidity burden in Europe. The extent to which infectious agents are responsible for the chronic disease burden remains elusive. The complex nature of the natural history of chronic conditions calls for an overview of ongoing research activities linking infectious agents with these conditions in order to guide research endeavours, direct research funding, steer prevention efforts, and point health policy towards promising interventions. A selection of websites hosted by institutions either financing or conducting research with

Translational advances of exosomes in neurodegeneration towards precision healthcare: From biomarkers to therapeutic frontiers.

Exosomes are nanoscale extracellular vesicles (EVs) that mediate intercellular communication and carry proteins, lipids, mRNAs, and non-coding RNAs reflective of their parental cells. Their biogenesis, molecular composition, and ability to traverse physiological barriers, including the blood-brain barrier, position exosomes as powerful candidates for biomarker development and therapeutic delivery in neurodegenerative diseases (NDDs). In Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, and prion disorders, exosomes not only mirror pathological processes but actively participate in

Artificial Intelligence in Ophthalmology: Evolutions in Asia.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has been studied in ophthalmology since availability of digital information in ophthalmic care. The significant turning point was availability of commercial digital color fundus photography in the late 1990s, which caused digital screening for diabetic retinopathy (DR) to take off. Automated Retinal Disease Assessment software was then developed using machine learning to detect abnormal lesions in fundus to screen DR. The use of this version of AI had not been generalized because the specificity at 45% was not high enough, although the sensitivity reached 90%. The

Biomedicine in Canada. Virtual institutes gear up to do real research.

As president of the new Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR)--a collection of 13 virtual institutes based here that the government hopes will change the face of Canadian biomedical research--Alan Bernstein is in the enviable position of shaping an entire national research program from scratch. His goal is to strengthen Canadian biomedical research by earmarking as much as 30% of CIHR's overall budget for targeted research, rather than by creating a massive new infrastructure.

Responsible researchers and reviewers: Ethics of Good Clinical Practice silver jubilee workshop report.

Ethics education in biomedical research in India is frequently limited to regulatory compliance, with inadequate emphasis on ethical reasoning, contextual vulnerability, and deliberative review processes. As part of the Silver Jubilee of the Institutional Ethics Committee of St John's Medical College Hospital, a one-day preconference workshop titled "Responsible Researchers and Reviewers: Ethics of Good Clinical Practice" was conducted during the 13th International Conference of Ethics Education. The workshop employed case-based, interdisciplinary discussions focusing on vulnerability, ethics …

When they hear what we say: ethical challenges in presenting research findings to the Huntington disease community.

Sharing findings with the Huntington disease (HD) community and other genetic disease communities is challenging because of the sensitivity involved in effectively communicating findings to participants. We describe our experiences of presenting multi-disciplinary research findings to the HD community, and discuss the need to: (1) balance potential benefits and harms for participants, researchers, and others; (2) demonstrate respect for participants' needs, expectations, and priorities; and (3) ensure transparency and respect for autonomy.

Ethical and social difficulties of addressing environmental harms related to health research.

Health research is vital to advance human well-being, but it is also a contributor to climate change and other environmental degradation. A growing bottom-up advocacy movement is engaged in developing measures (often called tools) to help researchers better understand the ways in which they can mitigate the environmental harms associated with research. While some evidence suggests benefits of using these tools, ethical and social challenges remain. These challenges include questions about: whether these tools will place undue burdens on researchers; whether the tools will be effective in suppo

Paving the physician-scientist career path: from grassroots gathering to national forum.

The Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine (AAIM) first convened a workshop in 2015 that brought a small group of internal medicine program directors together who recognized the growing success of early-phase physician-scientist training programs but the unclear path afterward for these trainees. The meeting subsequently evolved into what is now the annual American Society for Clinical Investigation/AAIM/Burroughs Wellcome Fund (ASCI/AAIM/BWF) Physician-Scientist Pathways Workshop, which continues to bring stakeholders together to discuss the obstacles to success that physician-scientists fac

Why publish? Perspectives of North African researchers in the medical field.

The act of publishing research is not just a procedural step; it is a fundamental part of the scientific process. It ensures transparency, accountability, and the continuous evolution of knowledge. This perspective paper aimed to revisit the theoretical reasons/motivations that lead researchers in the medical field to engaging in the publication process, and to determine those of researchers from a low-income country (Tunisia). When researchers publish their findings, they provide a foundation upon which others can build. This iterative process is what drives innovation and discovery. Moreover

Did the United States smokeless tobacco industry use cigarette industry strategies to sponsor and manipulate research?

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The cigarette industry in the United States (US) laid the foundation for sponsoring research to improve public relations and defend against product liability cases. Fewer threats of litigation facing the US smokeless tobacco (SLT) industry may have contributed to the sponsorship of independent research on SLT use and health outcomes. This study aimed to determine whether the SLT industry used cigarette industry strategies to manipulate research on health risks. METHODS: Internal industry documents (e.g. letters, memos) from the 1970s through 1990s were accessed through the
