Regional thickness of parietal bone in Korean adults.

To clarify the clinical utility of the parietal bone graft in maxillofacial reconstruction, we performed an anatomical study by measuring the regional thickness of the parietal bone in 47 Korean adult dry skulls. Before sectioning of the calvaria, the appropriate anatomical landmarks were marked on each specimen. We measured the total thickness of the parietal bone, and the thickness of the outer and inner cortical plates at various points in each section of parietal bones using a digital caliper under the stereomicroscope. The total thickness of the parietal bone ranged from 5.04mm to 7.17mm,

Nonunion Rate following Ulnar Shortening Osteotomy using Brand-Specific Systems: A Systematic Review.

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to compare nonunion rates between conventional plates versus specific systems for ulnar shortening osteotomy (USO). MATERIALS AND METHODS: To identify relevant studies, we searched various databases, including MEDLINE via Ovid, Embase.com, Web of Science Core Collection, Cochrane CENTRAL via Wiley, and Google Scholar. The level of evidence was assessed independently by three evaluators. Preferred reporting items for systematic reviews (PRISMA) recommendations were followed during the study selection process, which involved applying inclusion and exclusion criteria.

Computational Modeling and Mechanical Testing of Calcaneus Fracture Plates: A Review.

This review article surveys all computational and experimental investigations that varied plate and/or screw variables to evaluate the mechanical effect on calcaneus (i.e., heel bone) fracture plates (CFPs). PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science archives were examined for studies published on any date and in any language that (i) mechanically characterized the effect of changing plate and/or screw variables on CFP performance, rather than just comparing or augmenting CFPs with other types of implants and (ii) only analyzed calcaneus fractures, rather than other co-injuries of the ankle or foot. Biomechanical in vitro assessment of screw augmentation in locked plating of proximal humerus fractures.

INTRODUCTION: Proximal humerus fracture fixation can be difficult because of osteoporosis making it difficult to achieve stable implant anchorage in the weak bone stock even when using locking plates. This may cause implant failure requiring revision surgery. Cement augmentation has, in principle, been shown to improve stability. The aim of this study was to investigate whether augmentation of particular screws of a locking plate aimed at a region of low bone quality is effective in improving stability in a proximal humerus fracture model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twelve paired human humerus sp

Impaired growth plate function in bmp-6 null mice.

Bone morphogenetic protein 6 (BMP-6) is expressed by different skeletal cells including osteoblasts and growth plate chondrocytes, suggesting roles in bone formation and growth regulation. To address these possibilities, we examined whether cancellous and cortical bone parameters, or indices of growth plate function, are altered in bmp-6 null mice as assessed under basal conditions, and following stimulation of bone formation and suppression of growth by estrogen treatment. Ten-week-old female littermate bmp-6 null and wild-type (WT) mice were administered vehicle or E(2) 4, 40, 400 or 4,000 m

Patient-specific implants made of 3D printed bioresorbable polymers at the point-of-care: material, technology, and scope of surgical application.

BACKGROUND: Bioresorbable patient-specific additive-manufactured bone grafts, meshes, and plates are emerging as a promising alternative that can overcome the challenges associated with conventional off-the-shelf implants. The fabrication of patient-specific implants (PSIs) directly at the point-of-care (POC), such as hospitals, clinics, and surgical centers, allows for more flexible, faster, and more efficient processes, reducing the need for outsourcing to external manufacturers. We want to emphasize the potential advantages of producing bioresorbable polymer implants for cranio-maxillofacia

Effect of the Proximity of Roots to the Cortical Plate and Inclination of Incisors on External Apical Root Resorption.

BACKGROUND: External apical root resorption (EARR) is an unfavorable side effect of orthodontic treatment. Orthodontic treatment of patients with increased crowding could lead to the proclination of incisors and proximity of roots to the cortical plates. AIMS: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of the proximity of the labial and lingual cortical plates and the inclination of incisors on EARR. SETTINGS AND DESIGN: Twenty-six patients (age: 13.39 years) with nonextraction fixed orthodontic treatment were evaluated at pretreatment and posttreatment (52 cone-beam computed tomograp

Posterior short fusion without neural decompression using pedicle screws and spinous process plates: A simple and effective treatment for neurological deficits following osteoporotic vertebral collapse.

BACKGROUND: The optimal treatment of neurological deficits following osteoporotic vertebral collapse (OVC) is controversial, owing to complications that result from fragile bone quality. In the present study, we assessed surgical results following posterior spinal fusion without decompression. We achieved stable fusion over a short segment of the spinal column using pedicle screws and spinous process plates, maximizing the use of the preserved posterior elements. METHODS: We reviewed surgical data, perioperative complications, clinical outcomes, and radiographic data of 20 consecutively recru

Experimental studies on the use of a cushioned plate for internal fixation.

Internal fixation is widely used in the operative treatment of fractures, but various problems, such as local osteoporosis, may occur when living bone is fixed with a rigid metal plate. We propose a new method of immobilisation, which we have termed "cushioned plate fixation", in an attempt to solve some of these problems. Cushioned plate fixation involves a silicone rubber cushion placed between the steel plate and the bone. On the basis of data obtained from animal experiments in vivo and mechanical tests in vitro, we conclude that the cushion is effective in preventing osteoporosis without

Premature closure of the distal radial physis.

Two cases of fracture of the radius treated by pinning resulted in severe wrist joint deformity due to premature closure of the epiphysial growth plate. Inappropriate pinning through the physis damaged the growth plate in both cases. They were treated by bone bridge resection with free fat interposition. The bone bar resection was effective in correcting the wrist joint deformity, and bone growth was expected without bone grafting.

Emulsion-free chitosan-genipin microgels for growth plate cartilage regeneration.

The growth plate is a cartilage tissue near the ends of children's long bones and is responsible for bone growth. Injury to the growth plate can result in the formation of a 'bony bar' which can span the growth plate and result in bone growth abnormalities in children. Biomaterials such as chitosan microgels could be a potential treatment for growth plate injuries due to their chondrogenic properties, which can be enhanced through loading with biologics. They are commonly fabricated via an emulsion method, which involves solvent rinses that are cytotoxic. Here, we present a high throughput, no

Tibial implant fixation in TKA worth a revision?-how to avoid stress-shielding even for stiff metallic implants.

In total knee arthroplasty (TKA), force is transmitted into the tibia by a combined plate-stem device along with cemented or cementless stem fixation. The present work analyzes this force transmission in finite element simulations with the main aim to avoid reported postsurgical bone density reduction as a consequence of a reduced tibial bone loading. In the numerical analysis different implant materials, stem/extension lengths and implant-to-stem interface conditions are considered, from a stiff fully cemented fixation to sliding contact conditions with a low friction coefficient. The impact

Appropriately Matched Fixed-Angle Locking Plates Improve Stability in Volar Distal Radius Fixation.

PURPOSE: Size options for volar locking plates may provide value for distal radius fixation. We compared excessively narrow plates with plates that were appropriately matched in width for fixation of an multifragmented distal radius fracture model. METHODS: Eighteen matched pairs (right and left wrists) of large, cadaveric male distal radii specimens, prepared with a simulated Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Osteosynthesefragen type C-3 distal radius fractures, were tested. One specimen from each matched pair was randomized to receive a plate that was appropriately matched in width to the distal radi

Hybrid fixation with ESIN for both bone forearm fractures in adults: A case report and literature review.

OBJECTIVE: Both bone forearm fractures are common in children and rare in adults. The main surgical treatment is open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) with plate, while the hybrid fixation of elastic-stable intramedullary nailing (ESIN) and the plate has been rarely reported before. CASE REPORT: We report a case of a 29-year-old male patient with both bone forearm fractures. Temporarily closed reduction and plaster external fixation were performed in the emergency room, and the patient was admitted to the orthopedic trauma ward for surgery. The patient underwent open reduction and plate

[Biological internal fixation -- guidelines for the rehabilitation].

The process of fracture healing restores the biological and mechanical state of the bone tissue. In contrast to other tissues, bone has the unique capacity to heal through a real repair process resulting not in a scar but in a regular reconstitution of its original tissue structure. During the last two decades, the understanding of bone biology continuously evolved leading to the new concept that preservation of the viability of the bone fragments is the key to unimpaired fracture healing. The biological fracture management provides environmental conditions that allow the natural healing proce

In Silico Modeling of Safe Force Limits for Trismus Therapy Following Jaw Reconstruction.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Restricted mouth opening (trismus) is a common complication following segmental mandibulectomy and autologous bone reconstruction. However, the biomechanical limits of reconstructed mandibles, particularly in cases without bone union, remain poorly understood. Restorabite is a novel jaw-stretching device designed to increase the safety of trismus therapy by controlling the applied force. This study estimates the patient-specific loading limits in compromised mandibular reconstruction using finite element analysis to guide safe trismus therapy. METHODS: Based on patie
