Effects of undernutrition on development of far-field auditory brain stem responses in rat pups.

Timed-pregnancy Sprague-Dawley rats were placed on special diets on day 15 of their pregnancy. One group received a normal, 24% protein diet, and the second a deficient, 8% protein diet. After birth the litters within each group were cross-fostered, thinned to 8 pups each, and maintained on their respective diets. Beginning with postnatal day 16 the ABR (auditory brain stem response) was repeatedly recorded from the pups until day 43. Undernourished rat pup body weights were less than one-third of those of the well-nourished litters at the conclusion of testing. ABRs taken from the undernouris…

[Hypersomnic syndrome in circulatory disorders of the oral portions of the brain stem (clinico-morphologic observations)].

Hypersomnia is described in 11 patients who have had a cerebral circulation episode with prevalent localization of the lesion in the oral divisions of the brain trunk. Three morphological observations are presented: these were cases of bilateral affection of certain meso- and diencephalic structures, e.g. medial divisions of the thalami and the diencephalon cover with involvement of the grey matter of the Sylvian aqueduct into the process. The observations presented confirm the opinion that the nonspecific structures of the meso- and diencephalic region are a part of the complex cortico-subcor

Phase reversal in brain stem responses: its use in the detection of asymmetry in the auditory pathways.

Electrode placement is an important consideration in the recording of a large-amplitude stable response. In this study, brain stem auditory-evoked potentials (BAEP) were obtained from subjects and patients under two electrode configurations, namely 'vertex-mastoid' and 'mastoid-mastoid'. The BAEP waveforms to ipsilateral, contralateral and binaural stimulation were examined for their phase relation with respect to stimulation. In the mastoid-mastoid recording mode, a complete polarity reversal was shown upon changing stimulation from the ipsilateral (with respect to the active input) to the co…

[Important aspects of brain stem audiometry (BERA) with regard to the diagnosis of acoustic nerve neuroma].

Starting with a case report, the interest of the BERA for the diagnosis of acoustic tumor is examined. Moreover, factors being able to complicate a clear interpretation of the result (transmissional and sensorineural dysfunctions) are discussed. The conclusion is drawn that the E. Coch. G. offers a factor of greater precision in the use of the BERA as an oto-neurological diagnostic tool.

Partial transtentorial displacement of the cerebellum and the brain stem in hydrocephalus-a primary condition or a result of treatment?

Two cases of upward displacement of parts of the brain stem and the cerebellum are discussed. In both cases shunts for a hydrocephalus had been operating for a long time (three and a half years in one and seven months in the other). One infant had a meningomyelocele but no complete Arnold-Chiari malformation. The cause of the hydrocephalus in the other case was doubtful, but was thought to be transtentorial displacement of the brain stem and the cerebellum causing traction on the pons and consequent meningeal fibrosis with obstruction of the cisterna pontis. In this case osseous hypoplasia of …

Gliomas (astrocytomas) of the brain-stem with spinal intra- and extradural metastases: report of three cases.

Astrocytomas of the pons and medulla oblongata ('brain-stem gliomas') while often invasive locally, do not as a rule seed and metastasize along the spinal meninges. Three cases are here reported (two adults, one child) in whom astrocytoma of the brain-stem metastasized along the spinal cord. The dura mater itself and the spinal epidural space were invaded in two cases. The child and one adult had a pontine astrocytoma, the other adult's tumour originated in the medulla oblongata. In the two cases that came to necropsy the tumour of the brain-stem was much better differentiated than the meninge

Blood-brain barrier repair: potential and challenges of stem cells and exosomes in stroke treatment.

Stroke is characterized with high morbidity, mortality and disability all over the world, and one of its core pathologies is blood-brain barrier (BBB) dysfunction. BBB plays a crucial physiological role in protecting brain tissues and maintaining homeostasis in central nervous system (CNS). BBB dysfunction serves as a key factor in the development of cerebral edema, inflammation, and further neurological damage in stroke patients. Currently, stem cells and their derived exosomes have shown remarkable potential in repairing the damaged BBB and improving neurological function after stroke. Stem

Biomaterials and stem cells targeting the microenvironment for traumatic brain injury repair: progress and prospects.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) disrupts neural pathways, leading to sensory, motor, and autonomic dysfunctions, with no fully restorative therapies currently available. The pathophysiology of TBI involves two phases: primary injury and secondary injury. These stages are characterized by dynamic alterations in cellular death, glial activation, and inflammatory cytokine profiles, collectively establishing a regeneration-inhibitory microenvironment. Biomaterials, such as hydrogels and nanofiber scaffolds, mimic the extracellular matrix (ECM) to provide structural support, modulate local inflammator

Epigenetic Regulation of RNF135 by LSD1 Promotes Stemness Maintenance and Brain Metastasis in Lung Adenocarcinoma.

RING finger protein 135 (RNF135) is identified as a regulator in certain cancer types. However, its role and molecular mechanisms in lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) are still unclear. Herein, we investigated the level of RNF135 in tumor tissues of LUAD patients using the UALCAN database and confirmed the data by real-time PCR and western blot analysis. The effects of RNF135 on stemness maintenance and migration/invasion capability of LUAD cells were investigated by sphere formation, flow cytometry, wound healing, and transwell assay. Limiting dilution xenograft assay and intracardiac injection of L

In vivo distribution of cerebrospinal fluid tracer in human upper spinal cord and brain stem.

BACKGROUNDIntrathecal injection is an attractive route through which drugs can be administered and directed to the spinal cord, restricted by the blood-spinal cord barrier. However, in vivo data on the distribution of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) substances in the human spinal cord are lacking. We conducted this study to assess the enrichment of a CSF tracer in the upper cervical spinal cord and the brain stem.METHODSAfter lumbar intrathecal injection of a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agent, gadobutrol, repeated blood samples and MRI of the upper cervical spinal cord, brain stem, and…

Altered gastric tone and motility response to brain-stem dopamine in a rat model of parkinsonism.

The majority of patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) experience gastrointestinal dysfunction. Recently, we described a nigro-vagal pathway that uses dopaminergic (DA) inputs to the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus (DMV) and A2 area neurons to modulate gastric motility and tone. This pathway is disrupted in a rodent model of PD. The aim of the present study was to test the hypothesis that brain-stem DA modulation of gastric tone and motility is altered in a rodent model of PD. Male Sprague-Dawley rats received three weekly intraperitoneal injections of paraquat (10 mg/kg) or saline (control)

Pluripotent Stem Cells for Brain Repair: Protocols and Preclinical Applications in Cortical and Hippocampal Pathologies.

Brain injuries causing chronic sensory or motor deficit, such as stroke, are among the leading causes of disability worldwide, according to the World Health Organization; furthermore, they carry heavy social and economic burdens due to decreased quality of life and need of assistance. Given the limited effectiveness of rehabilitation, novel therapeutic strategies are required to enhance functional recovery. Since cell-based approaches have emerged as an intriguing and promising strategy to promote brain repair, many efforts have been made to study the functional integration of neurons derived

Spontaneous complete regression of a brain stem glioma pathologically diagnosed as a high-grade glioma.

BACKGROUND: Spontaneous regressions of brain stem gliomas are extremely rare. Only six cases have been reported in the literature. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe the case of a patient who was diagnosed with a pontomedullary dorsal brain stem glioma at the age of 15 years. An open biopsy showed the presence of an anaplastic glioma. Because the patient and her parents refused conventional therapies, including radiation and chemotherapy, we followed up the patient by performing magnetic resonance imaging scans on her every 3 months. At 3 months after biopsy, we observed the radiological disappea…

Vagally mediated effects of brain stem dopamine on gastric tone and phasic contractions of the rat.

Dopamine (DA)-containing fibers and neurons are embedded within the brain stem dorsal vagal complex (DVC); we have shown previously that DA modulates the membrane properties of neurons of the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus (DMV) via DA1 and DA2 receptors. The vagally dependent modulation of gastric tone and phasic contractions, i.e., motility, by DA, however, has not been characterized. With the use of microinjections of DA in the DVC while recording gastric tone and motility, the aims of the present study were 1) assess the gastric effects of brain stem DA application, 2) identify the DA r…
