One case of unilateral pulmonary oedema a vacuo is reported and the 38 cases published in the literature are reviewed. Contributing factors are essential, the main ones being the duration and severity of lung collapse and the rate of reexpansion. The clinical signs and symptoms are described, together with the various possible courses of the disease, and the severity factors are deduced from 8 lethal cases. A therapeutic approach is proposed but not formalised, since pathophysiological data are still scarce.

An experimental model of cerebral infarction in rat brain was successfully established by means of the unilateral internal carotid injection of carbon microspheres. A histopathological investigation of the infarcted brain was performed. The results were as follow: 1. No cerebral infarction was made by the unilateral internal carotid ligation alone. 2. Focal cerebral edema was most marked at the white matter of the embolized hemisphere. 3. The edema was also conspicuous in the deep cerebral gray matter, especially in hippocampus. Degeneration and pyknosis of the neurons were observed at the sam

The effect of experimentally induced uniocular trauma was investigated in the adult albino rabbit by means of iris fluorescein angiography. Paracentesis, blunt trauma, occlusion of all four vortex veins or of the two long posterior ciliary arteries, or local instillation of nitrogen mustard, were performed in a number of animals, some of which received systemic aspirin preoperatively. Iris angiograms of the injured and the contralateral eye were performed immediately after the traumatic insult. The injured eye always showed an increased permeability to fluorescein. Except for paracentesis, the

Pulmonary microembolization secondary to platelet aggregation has been suggested to be a pathogenetic component of the shock lung syndrome. In vitro experiments have also shown that platelets can release factors with a permeability-enhancing activity. We studied the effect of collagen-induced platelet aggregation on the hydraulic conductivity of thexchange vessels in isolated, blood-perfused rabbit lungs. The net rate of fluid filtration in each pair of lungs was determined during standardized elevations of left atrial pressure before and after platelet aggregation induced by intraarterial col

Stable nitroxyl radicals (nitroxides) are potential antioxidant drugs, and we have previously reported that linking nitroxide to biological macromolecules can improve therapeutic activity in at least two ways. First, polynitroxylated compounds such as polynitroxyl human serum albumin (PNA) are a novel class of high molecular weight, extracellular antioxidants. Second, compounds such as PNA can prolong the half-life of free (unbound, low molecular weight) nitroxides such as 4-hydroxy-2,2,6, 6-tetramethylpiperidine-N-oxyl (Tempol) in vivo. Unlike PNA, Tempol can readily access the intracellular

alpha1-Adrenergic agonists inhibit hyperventilation-induced bronchoconstriction (HIB) in dogs. We tested the hypothesis that alpha-agonists inhibit HIB by reducing bronchovascular leakage and edema that theoretically could cause airway obstruction. Peripheral airways were isolated by using a bronchoscope; pretreated with either methoxamine (Mx), norepinephrine (NE), or saline aerosol; and then exposed to a 2,000 ml/min dry-air challenge (DAC) for 2 min. Colloidal carbon was injected before DAC and used to quantify bronchovascular permeability. Mx-, NE-, and vehicle-treated airways were prepare

BACKGROUND: The blood-brain barrier (BBB) plays a critical role in maintaining brain homeostasis by tightly regulating molecular transport. However, its integrity is often compromised with aging and in neurodegenerative diseases, contributing to disease pathology. Studying the biological consequences of BBB dysfunction independent of concomitant pathology remains challenging, largely due to the absence of reliable and inducible animal models that avoid unintended side effects such as osmotic effects, neuroinflammation, or vascular damage. In this study, we evaluated the use of Power Doppler ul

BACKGROUND: While plasma transfusion is a key resuscitation strategy, its mechanisms of benefit beyond coagulopathy correction remain unclear. Solvent detergent plasma, which contains high glycine levels and lacks inflammatory mediators, may offer advantages over fresh frozen plasma by preserving endothelial integrity and reducing inflammation. This study aimed to test whether plasma containing a high dose of glycine is superior to standard plasma in improving outcomes after traumatic shock by mitigating endothelial damage and inflammation.

OBJECTIVE: The Blood-Brain Barrier (BBB) is the gatekeeper of the central nervous system, effectively shielding the brain from blood-borne threats but simultaneously representing a significant challenge for treating neurological diseases. Altering the permeability of the BBB enables increasing the local drug concentration enhancing therapeutic effects. This study aims to explore the BBB permeability alteration through localized mild temperature increases, addressing the challenge of accurately determining and monitoring thermal dosages during hyperthermia treatments.
METHODS: To investigate t

BACKGROUND: Ways to prevent disease-induced vascular modifications that accelerate brain damage remain largely elusive. Improved understanding of perivascular cell signalling could provide unparalleled insight as these cells impact vascular stability and functionality of the neurovascular unit as a whole. Identifying key drivers of astrocyte and pericyte responses that modify cell-cell interactions and crosstalk during injury is key. At the cellular level, injury-induced outcomes are closely entwined with activation of the hypoxia-inducible factor-1 (HIF-1) pathway. Studies clearly suggest tha

Pathological hyperpermeability is a morbidity involved in various systemic diseases, including sepsis. The endothelial glycocalyx layer (GCX) plays a key role in controlling vascular permeability and could be a useful therapeutic target. The purpose of the present study was to analyze the functional role of the GCX in vascular permeability and to elucidate its role in pathological conditions. First, male C57BL/6J wild-type mice were used as in vivo models to study the effects of sepsis and the pharmacological digestion of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) on the GCX. Vascular permeability was evaluate

BACKGROUND: We investigated the frequency of blood-retina barrier impairment in optic neuritis (ON) using gadolinium leakage in ocular structures (GLOS), a novel imaging marker on contrast enhanced fluid attenuated inversion recovery images (FLAIR).
METHODS: In 12 patients with acute ON who underwent repeated MRI the presence of GLOS was noted on contrast-enhanced FLAIR.
RESULTS: Bilateral GLOS was observed in 4 (33.3%): in 3 symmetrical, and in 1 asymmetrical. In the latter GLOS was ipsilateral to the ON.
CONCLUSIONS: GLOS may be observed frequently in ON. Asymmetrical GLOS may be caused b

BACKGROUND: Anaphylaxis includes mast cell (MC) activation, but less is known about downstream mechanisms (ie, vascular permeability controlled by endothelial cells [ECs]). The TNF-like weak inducer of apoptosis (TWEAK) and its sole receptor, fibroblast growth factor-inducible molecule 14 (Fn14), belong to the TNF superfamily and are involved in proinflammatory responses.
OBJECTIVE: We sought to investigate the role of TWEAK/Fn14 axis in anaphylaxis.
METHODS: In vivo vascular permeability and mouse models of passive systemic anaphylaxis (PSA) and active systemic anaphylaxis were applied to w

Zinc is the second most abundant metal in human and serves as an essential trace element in the body. During the past decades, zinc has been found to play important roles in central nervous system, such as the development of neurons and synaptic activities. An imbalance of zinc is associated with brain diseases. The blood-brain barrier (BBB) maintains the homeostasis of the microenvironment, regulating the balance of zinc in the brain. A compromised BBB is the main cause of severe complications in cerebral ischemic patients, such as hemorrhage transformation, inflammation and edema. Recent stu

Abnormal angiogenesis and vascular permeability is important for the formation of nasal polyps (NPs). Increasing evidence has indicated that exosomes serve a vital role in modulating angiogenesis and vascular permeability. A disintegrin and metalloprotease 10 (ADAM10), an important type of proteinase that is overexpressed in various diseases, can influence angiogenesis and vascular permeability and has been observed in healthy nasal exosomes. To the best of our knowledge, the expression levels and the function of ADAM10 in NLF‑derived exosomes from NPs has not been demonstrated previously. In

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Ventilator-induced lung injury is a major contributor to perioperative lung injury. The end-expiratory lung volume, regional lung overdistension, and tidal recruitment are known to be the main factors causing subsequent alveolar damage and inflammation. The alveolar-capillary membrane including the endothelial glycocalyx as an integral part of the vascular endothelium seems to play a major role in different kinds of lung injury.
RECENT FINDINGS: Recent studies underline the pivotal importance of the endothelial glycocalyx in lung injury. The glycocalyx regulates and modulat
