Amiodarone is associated with multiple side effects among which a substantial number of patients are suffering from amiodarone-induced thyroid disease. In this review we present difficulties in diagnosing, sub typing and treating amiodarone-induced thyroid disease and give views on the future of this drug and one of the alternatives, dronedarone. Amiodarone holds a place in modern medicine due to its unique antiarrhythmic effects and associated thyroid diseases requires collaboration between cardiologists and endocrinologists due to the complexity hereof.

Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) for bicuspid aortic valve stenosis can pose several technical challenges including difficult valve crossing. We report the case of a 77-year-old woman undergoing transfemoral TAVI for symptomatic severe bicuspid aortic stenosis. It proved impossible to cross the bicuspid aortic valve retrogradely despite the use of multiple catheters and wires and attempts by two interventional cardiologists. We describe a novel approach to antegrade crossing, through a transseptal access, to permit retrograde implant of prosthesis.

We present the case of a 69-year-old woman with a history of kyphoscoliosis, arterial hypertension, and chronic hypercapnic respiratory failure. She underwent the computed tomography of the chest, and incidental anomalies of the aortic arch branches were found. Asymptomatic aberrant right subclavian artery and bicarotid trunk, which was found, are rare and usually incidental findings. The presence of this anomaly is becoming increasingly important to interventional cardiologists and radiologists as the number of endovascular procedures is increasing every year.

Spontaneous closure of an atrial septal defect (ASD) is well described in pediatric cardiology but may be less familiar to adult internists and cardiologists. We report a moderately sized 6-mm ASD that closed spontaneously without intervention. A literature review found that a smaller defect size and an early age of diagnosis are the most important predictors of closure. Possible mechanisms of a spontaneous ASD closure include adaptive endothelial migration, limited myocardial proliferation, and fibroblast migration with extracellular matrix deposition.

Cardiovascular demands to the care of cancer patients are common and important given the implications for morbidity and mortality. As a consequence, interactions with cardiovascular disease specialists have intensified to the point of the development of a new discipline termed cardio-oncology. As an additional consequence, so-called cardio-oncology clinics have emerged, in most cases staffed by cardiologists with an interest in the field. This article addresses this gap and summarizes key points in the development of a cardio-oncology clinic.
