This study proposes the description of the development of the postcranial axial skeleton, including vertebrae, gastralium, ribs, sternum, and interclavicle, in Melanosuchus niger. Six nests were marked and two eggs removed from each nest at 24-hr intervals until hatching. For posthatching evaluation, 30 hatchlings were kept in captivity and one exemplar was euthanized at three-day intervals. Samples were diaphanized using potassium hydroxide (KOH), alizarin red S, and Alcian blue. A routinely generally used method was applied for histological evaluation. It was difficult to define in which ver

Osteoarthritis is a common complication in the elderly and is often associated with osteophyte growth on vertebral bodies. The clinical presentation of vertebral osteophytes is related to anatomical structures adjacent to the spinal column. For instance, cervical osteophytes potentially involve the pharynx and esophagus, leading to dysphagic symptoms that may be accompanied by food aspiration, vocal fold paralysis and obstructive sleep apnea. In addition to anterior cervical osteophytes, posterior and uncinate process osteophytes may form, compressing the spinal cord and vertebral artery blood

PURPOSE: Unclosed transverse foramina (UTF) represent anatomical variations of the cervical vertebrae that may influence vertebral artery, vein or sympathetic nerves, particularly at the level of the atlas (C1). This study aimed to determine the prevalence and distribution of UTF in a South African skeletal population and to evaluate associations with age, biological sex, and population affinity. METHODS: A macroscopic osteological assessment of cervical vertebrae from 800 individuals was performed using a South African skeletal repository. UTF were identified based on incomplete osseous closu

BACKGROUND: Low density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 11 (LRP11) was involved in the progression of several tumors. However, its role in cervical cancer still remains uncertain.
METHODS: The original tumor data was downloaded from the Cancer Genome Atlas and genotype-tissue expression databases. The expression of LRP11 in normal tissues, tumor tissues and adjacent tissues were evaluated. In addition, we also explored the genetic alteration, prognostic value, and gene function of LRP11. We deeply assessed the interaction between LRP11 and tumor immunity at the pan-cancer level. Finally,

BACKGROUND: Grisel's syndrome is a non-traumatic atlantoaxial subluxation associated with inflammatory conditions of the head and neck, which occurs primarily in children. Increased flexibility of the ligaments during inflammation is implicated in the pathogenesis of the subluxation between the axis and atlas. The potential sequelae may be severe, and early diagnosis and treatment of Grisel's syndrome can prevent tragic outcomes.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of torticollis in an 8-year-old child. She had a two-week history of a streptococcal throat infection. The patient was treated w

OBJECTIVE: Atlantal arch defects are rare. Few cadaveric and imaging studies have been reported on the variations of such anomalies. Our goal in this study was to examine the incidence and review the clinical implications of this anomaly.
METHODS: A retrospective review of 1,153 neck or cervical spine computed tomography (CT) scans was performed to identify patients with atlantal arch defects. Neck CT scans were performed in 650 patients and cervical spine CT scans were performed in 503 patients. Posterior arch defects of the atlas were grouped in accordance with the classification of Currari

OVERVIEW: Cervical spine injury may present with pediatric patients having sustained fractures of the craniofacial skeleton. Management considerations of the cervical spine often take priority to the fractures of the facial skeleton. The goal of this study was to examine this subset of patients with a focus on initial presentation and need for intervention.
METHODS: A retrospective review from 2000 to 2012 of all facial fractures in patients ≤ 18 years at a level 1 trauma center was performed. Patient demographics, location of fractures, and the presence of a cervical spine injury were collec

BACKGROUND: Atlantoaxial subluxation secondary to a paravertebral (retropharyngeal) abscess is a well known but rare event in children.
CASE DESCRIPTION: The authors describe the clinical and radiologic findings of a case of 6-year-old child who presented with acute torticollis (duration, 4 days). Type 2 atlantoaxial rotatory fixation and upper cervical paravertebral (retropharyngeal) abscess were diagnosed on radiologic examination. Laboratory test results showed positive agglutination titer for Brucella melitensis, in the rate of 1/640 dilution. This is the first reported case of Brucella-r

Pathological features are described, and clinico-pathological correlations are made, in 11 patients presenting the unusual combination of chronic compressive myelopathy of the upper cervical cord due to congenital atlanto-axial dislocation, and sudden haematomyelia and respiratory arrest developing at open surgery for release of pressure on the medullospinal tissues, or as a postoperative catstrophe. Necropsy and histological examination confirmed that the neuropathological substrate of intermittent or progressive quadriplegia and sensory changes (mainly deep sensory loss) was degeneration of

Ferroptosis is an iron-dependent nonapoptotic form of cell death that links iron, lipid, and glutathione levels to a variety of disease-related activities. However, the characteristics of ferroptosis in cervical carcinoma (CC) are poorly understood. We acquired raw data on CC cohorts from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database. Key genes were identified using differential gene expression analysis and intersected for further immune infiltration, transcription regulation, gene set variation analysis (GSVA), gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA), and drug sens

OBJECTIVE: Trauma and degenerative joint disease are the most common pathological conditions observed in archaeological skeletal remains. We describe the prevalence of different types of cervical bone diseases observed in the early Middle Ages (6th to 8th centuries AD).
METHODS: Human skeletons were excavated from Germanic row graves in southwestern Germany. One hundred ninety-six cervical spines thus obtained were examined for bone disease. The degenerative changes were classified into Grades 1 (marginal osteophytes), 2 (uneven joint surfaces), and 3 (osseous ankylosis). Cervical spinal cana

PURPOSE: Aneurysmal bone cysts (ABCs) of spine are conventionally treated with en-bloc resection or intralesional excision/curettage and reconstruction or filling of defects with bone cement. For the treatment of upper cervical ABCs, en-bloc resections are often not desirable considering the risk/benefit ratio while the risk of recurrence after intralesional excision is high. Hence, alternative management options are often necessary. We describe our clinical experience with one such treatment alternative-denosumab for the treatment of ABC of Atlas.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We present a case of 16

BACKGROUND: Jefferson fractures, or burst fractures of the C1 vertebra, can be managed surgically or conservatively, depending on their stability.
METHODS: We identified all patients who were treated for a C1 fracture at our institution between 1999 and 2016 for retrospective analysis. Patients with any other concurrent cervical fractures or nontraumatic etiology of fracture were excluded. Stability was defined as either lateral mass displacement ≥7 mm on computed tomography or presence of transverse atlantal ligament disruption on magnetic resonance imaging. We collected data on patients' de

Aneurysmal bone cysts predominantly occur in young adults and the long bones, the lumbar spine and the pelvis are mainly affected. This article presents the case of a 22-year-old woman with the very rare localization of an aneurysmal bone cyst of the atlas and an atlas fracture after a minor trauma. The initial radiological diagnosis was a suspicted aneurysmal bone cyst which was confirmed histologically. Due to the unstable fracture it was decided to carry out surgical treatment with occipitocervical stabilization in combination with a transoral bone graft. After a period of 11 months the fra

STUDY DESIGN: Case report and surgical technique.
OBJECTIVE: To describe a new technique to treat atlas burst fractures by selectively reconstructing the atlas from a posterior approach.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: The two surgical techniques reported until now for stabilizing atlas burst fractures are associated with some drawbacks. Posterior C0-C2 or C1-C2 fixations significantly reduce head rotation, while the transoral C1 lateral masses osteosynthesis can be associated with oropharyngeal and neurological complications. We propose a new surgical technique for the treatment of unstable Jef

The study design described here is a posterior C1-C2 fusion technique composed of bilateral C1 hooks and C2 pedicle screws. In addition, the clinical results of using this method on 13 patients with C1-C2 instability are reported. The objectives are to introduce a new technique for posterior C1-C2 fusion and to evaluate the clinical outcome of using it to treat C1-C2 instability. From October 2006 to August 2008, 13 patients (9 men and 4 women) with C1-C2 instability were included in this study: 3 had acute odontoid fractures, 4 had obsolete odontoid fractures, 4 had os odontoideum and 2 had t
