Prolonged coccidioidomycosis transmission seasons in a warming California: a Markov state transition model of shifting disease dynamics.

Coccidioidomycosis, an emerging fungal disease in the southwestern United States, exhibits pronounced seasonal transmission, yet the influence of current and future climate on the timing and duration of transmission seasons remains poorly understood. We developed a distributed-lag Markov state transition model to estimate the effects of temperature and precipitation on the timing of transmission season onset and end, analysing reported coccidioidomycosis cases (n = 72 125) in California from 2000 to 2023. Using G-computation substitution estimators, we examined how hypothetical changes in seas

Mapping suitability for Buruli ulcer at fine spatial scales across Africa: A modelling study.

Buruli ulcer (BU) is a disabling and stigmatising neglected tropical disease (NTD). Its distribution and burden are unknown because of underdiagnosis and underreporting. It is caused by Mycobacterium ulcerans, an environmental pathogen whose environmental niche and transmission routes are not fully understood. The main control strategy is active surveillance to promote early treatment and thus limit morbidity, but these activities are mostly restricted to well-known endemic areas. A better understanding of environmental suitability for the bacterium and disease could inform targeted surveillan

Climate/chemistry feedbacks and biogenic emissions.

The oxidizing capacity of the atmosphere is affected by anthropogenic emissions and is projected to change in the future. Model calculations indicate that the change in surface ozone at some locations could be large and have significant implications for human health. The calculations depend on the precise scenarios used for the anthropogenic emissions and on the details of the feedback processes included in the model. One important factor is how natural biogenic emissions will change in the future. We carry out a sensitivity calculation to address the possible increase in isoprene emissions co

Interactive effects of ozone depletion and climate change on biogeochemical cycles.

The effects of ozone depiction on global biogeochemical cycles, via increased UV-B radiation at the Earth's surface, have continued to be documented over the past 4 years. In this report we also document various effects of UV-B that interact with global climate change because the detailed interactions between ozone depletion and climate change are central to the prediction and evaluation of future Earth environmental conditions. There is increasing evidence that elevated UV-B has significant effects on the terrestrial biosphere with important implications for the cycling of carbon, nitrogen an

The seasonal influence of climate and environment on yellow fever transmission across Africa.

BACKGROUND: Yellow fever virus (YFV) is a vector-borne flavivirus endemic to Africa and Latin America. Ninety per cent of the global burden occurs in Africa where it is primarily transmitted by Aedes spp, with Aedes aegypti the main vector for urban yellow fever (YF). Mosquito life cycle and viral replication in the mosquito are heavily dependent on climate, particularly temperature and rainfall. We aimed to assess whether seasonal variations in climatic factors are associated with the seasonality of YF reports. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We constructed a temperature suitability index fo

Scorpionism at the human-environment interface: an eco-epidemiological synthesis and conceptual framework.

INTRODUCTION: Scorpion envenomation is a major but persistently under-recognized public health problem in tropical and subtropical regions. Its occurrence arises from complex interactions among climatic, ecological, socioeconomic, and health-system drivers. Despite sustained high incidence and expanding risk associated with climate and land-use change, these relationships remain insufficiently synthesized. Addressing this gap requires an integrative framework capable of capturing the multi-level determinants shaping scorpionism risk and outcomes. METHODS: Drawing on Human Ecology Theory and s

Variation in Soil Organic Carbon Along an Altitudinal Gradient Across Different Aspects in the Timberline Zone of the Western Himalaya, India.

The timberline region of the Western Himalaya is a crucial ecological transition area highly sensitive to climate changes, which significantly influence vegetation patterns, soil formation, and carbon dynamics. This study aimed to investigate the spatial and altitudinal changes in soil organic carbon (SOC) across different topographic orientations and to evaluate machine-learning models for spatial SOC prediction in the timberline ecotone (2100-3300 m) of the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary. Through systematic random sampling across 100 m elevation bands, composite soil samples were collected fro

Biological reinvasion of Cochliomyia hominivorax (Diptera: Calliphoridae) in Mexico: impacts and risks under different climate change scenarios.

The New World screwworm, Cochliomyia hominivorax (Diptera: Calliphoridae), is an obligate parasitic fly that causes severe myiasis in livestock, wildlife, and humans, generating substantial economic and public health impacts. Following its historical eradication from North and Central America through sterile insect technique (SIT) programs, recent outbreaks in Central America and southern Mexico indicate ongoing biological reinvasion. We evaluated current and future environmental suitability for C. hominivorax using ecological niche modeling (Maximum Entropy [MaxEnt]) calibrated with 1,972 occ

Predicting CCHF incidence and its related factors using time-series analysis in the southeast of Iran: comparison of SARIMA and Markov switching models.

Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is endemic in the southeast of Iran. This study aimed to predict the incidence of CCHF and its related factors and explore the possibility of developing an empirical forecast system using time-series analysis of 13 years' data. Data from 2000 to 2012 were obtained from the Health Centre of Zahedan University of Medical Sciences, Climate Organization and the Veterinary Organization in the southeast of Iran. Seasonal autoregressive integrated moving average (SARIMA) and Markov switching models (MSM) were performed to examine the potential related factors o

Refined crop modelling reveals intensifying impacts of droughts and heatwaves on global wheat productivity.

Extreme weather events, including heatwaves and droughts, are becoming more frequent and intense, yet their impact on crop productivity remain highly uncertain. Here we jointly improve the structure and parameterization of a crop model to enhance its ability to reproduce climate impacts on global wheat productivity at 10-km resolution. Compared with a multimodel ensemble, the improved parameterization increases model skill by 30%, 20% and 7% in simulating global wheat yield losses from droughts, heatwaves and their compound events, respectively, during 1981-2015. Over the same period, the impr

Background trade winds and climate sensitivity control the eastern equatorial Pacific warming pattern.

Climate models robustly project enhanced warming in the eastern equatorial Pacific (EEP) by the late 21st century, producing a mean El Niño-like pattern that strongly influences atmospheric circulation and El Niño-Southern Oscillation dynamics. Here, we show that the magnitude of this pattern depends primarily on the model's strength of background Pacific trade winds and the effective climate sensitivity (EffCS), which together explain ∼74% of the intermodel variance in future EEP warming. Perturbation experiments reveal the underlying mechanism: Stronger trade winds produce larger east-west c…

Recurrent power outages and the mental health burden of grid reliability in Maryland.

Power outages are increasingly shaped by aging infrastructure, climate stress, and rising electricity demand. Their mental health consequences remain poorly quantified, particularly for routine outages outside major disasters. Here, we link 15-min outage records with Maryland Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project State Inpatient Database records from 2018 to 2023 and estimate ZIP-quarter associations with hospitalizations for primary mental health diagnoses. Higher outage exposure was consistently associated with increased hospitalization rates in Poisson pseudo-maximum likelihood models wit

Human amplification of climate-induced greenhouse gas emissions from global small water bodies.

Human activities amplify climate-induced greenhouse gas emissions from small water bodies (SWBs), creating critical but unquantified feedback in the global carbon cycle. Here, by training machine learning models on 470 field observations and upscaling to a global database of 3.28 million water bodies, we quantify this human amplification, which drives SWBs to emit 84.5 Tg CO2 y-1 and 11.0 Tg CH4 y-1, a disproportionate share of total inland water emissions (15% of CO2 and 28% of CH4) from only 6% of Earth's surface area. This amplification is primarily fueled by agricultural nutrient loading a

Integrated surveillance resolves Darién paradox of Oropouche virus emergence in Panama's migration corridor.

Oropouche virus (OROV) spread across the Americas in 2024, yet Panama's Darién migration corridor saw no outbreak until nearly a year after Brazil's January 2024 peak, raising two hypotheses: cryptic circulation masked by diagnostic gaps, or recent introduction under permissive climatic conditions. Here we resolve this paradox using integrated clinical, genomic, and climate-informed surveillance. Among 1,040 individuals tested, 43% were OROV-positive and showed a clinical signature distinct from co-circulating arboviruses, including headache more frequent than in dengue (RR 2.38, 95% CI 1.74-3

Vulnerability to climate-driven pathogen-specific diarrheal diseases: secondary analysis from the Global Enteric Multicenter Study and Vaccine Impact on Diarrhea in Africa follow-up.

The identification of climate-related risk factors for pathogen-specific diarrhea is critical for building resilience in high-risk and low-resource settings. Here we performed secondary analysis of published data from the Global Enteric Multicenter Study (GEMS) and Vaccine Impact on Diarrhea in Africa (VIDA) follow-up. We used daily counts of rotavirus, Shigella, Cryptosporidium, and enterotoxigenic E. coli producing heat stable toxin from two case-control studies of moderate-to-severe diarrhea (MSD) in The Gambia, Kenya and Mali (n = 9378). Using Random forests we identify influential climate

Barrier island geomorphic complexity drives storm and post-storm response.

Barrier islands are at the forefront of climate-driven changes, with their resiliency threatened by rapid fluctuations in the physical drivers that shape them. Quantifying magnitudes and directions of storm-driven sediment fluxes and rates and modes of sediment recovery is essential for predicting barrier island trajectories. Yet scarce shoreface observations have limited such efforts. Here, shoreface-inclusive measurements of barrier sediment fluxes over five years following an extreme storm reveal distinct sediment redistribution patterns that vary with island geomorphology. Overwash fluxes

Intensification of daily tropical precipitation extremes from more organized convection.

Tropical precipitation extremes and their changes with surface warming are investigated using global storm resolving simulations and high-resolution observations. The simulations demonstrate that the mesoscale organization of convection, a process that cannot be physically represented by conventional global climate models, is important for the variations of tropical daily accumulated precipitation extremes. In both the simulations and observations, daily precipitation extremes increase in a more organized state, in association with larger, but less frequent, storms. Repeating the simulations f…

Transmission of West Nile and five other temperate mosquito-borne viruses peaks at temperatures between 23°C and 26°C.

The temperature-dependence of many important mosquito-borne diseases has never been quantified. These relationships are critical for understanding current distributions and predicting future shifts from climate change. We used trait-based models to characterize temperature-dependent transmission of 10 vector-pathogen pairs of mosquitoes (Culex pipiens, Cx. quinquefascsiatus, Cx. tarsalis, and others) and viruses (West Nile, Eastern and Western Equine Encephalitis, St. Louis Encephalitis, Sindbis, and Rift Valley Fever viruses), most with substantial transmission in temperate regions. Urban microclimate dataset from low-cost sensor networks in a hot and humid tropical climate: Reunion Island.

This article describes an urban microclimate dataset collected on Reunion Island, a hot and humid tropical island in the southwest Indian Ocean, between October 2024 and June 2025. Measurements were acquired from two neighborhood-scale monitoring networks installed in Saint-Denis (north coast) and Le Port (west coast), representing contrasting urban morphologies and local climatic contexts. The monitoring system was based on several LoRa communication networks connecting 25 low-cost weather stations developed by the authors and deployed on residential buildings. More than ten stations were ins
