The devastating effects of Varroa destructor Anderson & Trueman on European honeybee colonies (Apis mellifera L.) have been well documented. Not only do these mites cause physical damage to parasitised individuals when they feed on them, they also transmit viruses and other pathogens, weaken colonies and can ultimately cause their death. Nevertheless, not all honeybee colonies are doomed once Varroa mites become established. Some populations, such as the savannah honeybee, A. m. scutellata, have become tolerant after the introduction of the parasite and are able to withstand the presence of th

Rabies is a worldwide zoonosis resulting from Lyssavirus infection. In Europe, Eptesicus serotinus is the most frequently reported bat species infected with Lyssavirus, and thus considered to be the reservoir of European bat Lyssavirus type 1 (EBLV-1). To date, the role of other bat species in EBLV-1 epidemiology and persistence remains unknown. Here, we built an EBLV-1-transmission model based on local observations of a three-cave and four-bat species (Myotis capaccinii, Myotis myotis, Miniopterus schreibersii, Rhinolophus ferrumequinum) system in the Balearic Islands, for which a 1995-2011 s

The success of ex situ survival assurance populations as tools for amphibian conservation depends on the health and reproductive success of founder populations. Necropsy examination and histopathology of animals that die in assurance populations are useful for the identification of population-limiting disease problems and can help to direct applied research efforts in areas such as amphibian husbandry and nutrition. This study reviewed postmortem findings in 167 frogs from 13 species that died in a large Panamanian rescue and survival assurance population between 2006 and 2011. Common problems

A 43-year-old woman was referred to our hospital for fever, general fatigue and left flank abdominal pain during the last two weeks. A blood test showed severe inflammation, and computed tomography (CT) study of the abdomen with intravenous contrast revealed swelling and irregular enhancement in the upper left kidney. Initially, we diagnosed it as xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis and treated it with antibiotics. A percutaneous renal biopsy was performed because the white blood cell count remained elevated after the treatment. Histopathologic examination revealed a carcinoma. Therefore, we pe

The aim of this study was to describe the dynamics of the long-legged bat tick Ixodes vespertilionis infestation on the lesser horseshoe bat Rhinolophus hipposideros in 2 nursery colonies roosting in attics. Out of a total of 810 lesser horseshoe bats examined, 217 (26.8%) were found to be infested with a total of 464 I. vespertilionis individuals. The developmental stage most frequently found was the larva, followed by the nymph, and the adult female. Bats were significantly more frequently infested with I. vespertilionis ticks in the period April to May than in other months. In these months,

Selection for chemical signals in birds could be influenced by parasitism as has been previously suggested for visual and acoustic displays. Crested auklets (Aethia cristatella), colonial seabirds from Alaska and Siberia, offer an example of how this might occur. Crested auklets secrete lipids in plumage, possibly as an indicator of status and attractiveness. Prominent among these secretions are aldehydes, which are noticeable as a pungent citrus-like odour. Octanal and hexanal, the most abundant aldehydes in the plumage of crested auklets, are potent invertebrate repellents, reported from the

Endothelial colony-forming cells (ECFCs) are decreased in the cord blood of preterm infants with moderate-to-severe bronchopulmonary dysplasia. We quantified ECFCs from infants with congenital diaphragmatic hernia, a neonatal disorder with severe lung hypoplasia. Unlike newborns who develop bronchopulmonary dysplasia, those with congenital diaphragmatic hernia had increased and highly-proliferative cord blood ECFCs.

BACKGROUND: Granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) is extensively used to improve neutrophil count during anti-cancer chemotherapy. We investigated the effects of G-CSF on several leukemic cell lines and screened for the expression of the G-CSF receptor (G-CSFR) in various malignant cells.
METHODS: We examined the effects of the most commonly used commercial forms of G-CSF (glycosylated lenograstim and nonglycosylated filgrastim) on various leukemic cell lines by flow cytometry. Moreover, we screened for the expression of G-CSFR mRNA in 38 solid tumor cell lines by using real-time PCR.

BACKGROUND: Endogenous Granulocyte Macrophage Colony Stimulating Factor (GMCSF) is released in rheumatoid arthritis patients, who are largely protected from Alzheimer's disease (AD). Introducing exogenous GMCSF into an AD mouse model reduced amyloid deposition by 55% and restored normal cognition. No published studies have examined exogenous GMCSF and cognitive functioning in humans. OBJECTIVES/DESIGN: The goal of the current study was to examine the association between receipt of GMCSF and cognitive functioning in patients receiving colony stimulating factors as part of routine supportive car

BACKGROUND: G-CSF has been shown to increase neuronal survival, which may positively influence the spinal cord microenvironment during the course of muscular dystrophies.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Male MDX mice that were six weeks of age received a left sciatic nerve transection and were treated with intraperitoneal injections of 200 µg/kg/day of G-CSF 7 days before and 7 days after the transection. The axotomy was performed after the cycles of muscular degeneration/regeneration, consistent with previous descriptions of this model of muscular dystrophy. C57BL/10 mice were used as contro

AIMS: Aortic stenosis causes cardiac hypertrophy and fibrosis, which often persists despite pressure unloading after aortic valve replacement. The persistence of myocardial fibrosis in particular leads to impaired cardiac function and increased mortality. We investigated whether granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) beneficially influences cardiac remodelling after pressure unloading.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Left ventricular hypertrophy was induced by transverse aortic constriction in C57bl6 mice followed by debanding after 8 weeks. This model closely mimics aortic stenosis and subsequen

FusE mutants are fusidic acid-resistant small colony variants (SCVs) of Staphylococcus aureus that can be selected with aminoglycosides. All FusE SCVs have mutations in rplF, encoding ribosomal protein L6. However, individual FusE mutants including some with the same mutation in rplF display auxotrophy for either hemin or menadione, suggesting that additional mutations are involved. Here we show that FusE SCVs can be divided into three genetic sub-groups and that some carry an additional mutation, in one of the genes required for hemin biosynthesis, or in one of the genes required for menadion

On the basis of the recent report that granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) treatment significantly improves survival and liver histology among chemically injured mice, we investigated whether G-CSF administration could contribute to faster recovery and promote tissue repair after local liver irradiation. Bone marrow chimeric female C57BL/6 mice were treated with G-CSF at days 7, 14, and 21 after local liver irradiation. We assessed the fibrosis index and the origin of proliferating cells reconstituting the liver at 2 or 5 weeks after radiation challenge. At day 35 after local irradia

Chagas disease is a tropical parasitic disease endemic to Latin America which affects more than 10 million people, and kills more than 15,000 people each year. This condition, caused by the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, is principally transmitted by kissing bugs (Triatominae). In Bolivia, recent reports by the Departmental Health Service showed the presence of Panstrongylus rufotuberculatus in dwellings located in the Charazani Valley (La Paz). A study was then carried out in the area to evaluate the degree of domiciliation of this species, and its possible role in the transmission of

INTRODUCTION: In Brazil, isolation of individuals affected with leprosy was compulsory by law from 1920 to 1962, but in reality, confinement of patients to leprosaria continued until the 1980s. The social participation restriction of people still living in these institutions has never been investigated systematically.
STUDY AIM: To examine the extent and type of participation restriction perceived by former leprosy patients living in the Centro de Convivência Antônio Diogo (CCAD), a previous leprosy colony in rural Northeast Brazil, by using the Participation Scale.
RESULTS: Forty (51-9%) ou

Most Staphylococcus aureus small-colony variants (SCVs) are auxotrophs for menadione, hemin, or thymidine but rarely for CO(2). We conducted a prospective investigation of all clinical cases of CO(2)-dependent S. aureus during a 3-year period. We found 14 CO(2)-dependent isolates of S. aureus from 14 patients that fulfilled all requirements to be considered SCVs, 9 of which were methicillin resistant. The clinical presentations included four cases of catheter-related bacteremia, one complicated by endocarditis; two deep infections (mediastinitis and spondylodiscitis); four wound infections; tw

Bats are important reservoir hosts of RNA viruses, including lyssaviruses, which can cross the species barrier to infect humans and other domestic and wild non-flying mammals. Six of the seven Lyssavirus genotypes described to date infect bats. In Europe, two genotypes of Lyssavirus, European bat Lyssavirus types 1 and 2 (EBLV-1 and EBLV-2), circulate among several bat species and numerous bats are found infected every year. To provide epidemiologists and public health officials with data to effectively implement public health measures, we have undertaken field studies to identify the temporal

Malaria has a substantial secondary effect on other causes of mortality. From the 19th century, malaria epidemics in the Andaman Islands' penal colony were initiated by the brackish swamp-breeding malaria vector Anopheles sundaicus and fuelled by the importation of new prisoners. Malaria was a major determinant of the highly variable all-cause mortality rate (correlation coefficient r(2)=0.60, n=68, p<0.0001) from 1872 to 1939. Directly attributed malaria mortality based on post-mortem examinations rarely exceeded one-fifth of total mortality. Infectious diseases such as pneumonia, tuberculosi
