Dengue and COVID-19 infections in the ASEAN region: a concurrent outbreak of viral diseases.

Member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) have faced dengue outbreaks for decades, and the region has one of the highest rates of dengue globally. Outbreaks continue to occur concurrently with the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic in the 10 ASEAN countries. Both infectious diseases pose a tremendous burden in these countries related to both infection control and the economy. Increases in the number of dengue cases occurred in part due to disruptions in the pathogen-host-vector relationship caused by changes in human behaviour in response to the COVID-19

Non-vaccine strategies for cholera prevention and control: India's preparedness for the global roadmap.

BACKGROUND: Recently World Health Organization's Global Task Force on Cholera Control (GTFCC) has published a global roadmap for prevention and control of cholera. We review preparedness of existing governmental non-vaccine programs and strategies for cholera prevention and control in India. We also describe strengths and gaps in the context of implementation of the global roadmap. METHODS: We reviewed published literature on non-vaccine based strategies for prevention and control of cholera in India and analyzed strengths and weaknesses of Government of India's major anti-cholera and ante-di

Control of Lyme borreliosis and other Ixodes ricinus-borne diseases.

Lyme borreliosis (LB) and other Ixodes ricinus-borne diseases (TBDs) are diseases that emerge from interactions of humans and domestic animals with infected ticks in nature. Nature, environmental and health policies at (inter)national and local levels affect the risk, disease burden and costs of TBDs. Knowledge on ticks, their pathogens and the diseases they cause have been increasing, and resulted in the discovery of a diversity of control options, which often are not highly effective on their own. Control strategies involving concerted actions from human and animal health sectors as well as

[Actual problems of vaccine prophylaxis in the Russian Federation].

The WHO within the framework of extended immunization program assumes a significant increase of the number of vaccine controlled infections by 2020 - 2025 to 27 - 37 including protection from diseases of parasitic etiology. Russia contributes to the international efforts of the WHO to control infections with vaccine prophylaxis. The national calendar of prophylaxis vaccinations currently provides vaccination against 11 infections--tuberculosis, hepatitis B, poliomyelitis, pertussis, diphtheria, tetanus, measles, rubella, epidemic parotitis, influenza, haemophilus type B infection. Significant

Neglected zoonotic diseases-the long and winding road to advocacy.

BACKGROUND: Years of advocacy for the neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) have focused the world's attention on these diseases of the poor, resulting most recently in the 2012 "London Declaration" and the recent World Health Assembly Resolution WHA66.12 on NTDs in May 2013. Control of the endemic neglected zoonotic diseases (NZDs) would benefit from a similar campaign, which needs the support of a global community. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: The resolutions from all 66 World Health Assembly (WHA) meetings held between 1948 and 2013 were examined to determine how many contain a specific fo

A review of the control of clonorchiasis sinensis and Taenia solium taeniasis/cysticercosis in China.

Clonorchiasis sinensis and Taenia solium taeniasis/cysticercosis are major foodborne parasitoses. Clonorchiasis sinensis is actively transmitted in some areas of China, Korea, Russia, Vietnam, etc. Currently, it is estimated that more than 200 million people are at risk of infection, 15-20 million people are infected, and 1.5-2 million show symptoms or complications. In China, it is relatively heavily transmitted in Zhujiang River Delta, including Hong Kong and Macao, and Northeast China, where many Korean people live. The transmission is related to the unhealthy habits of residents who like t

[The roles that the environment, the sanitary conditions, the epidemiology and vaccines play in the challenge of infectious diseases].

This commentary uses a recent article in the press about the failure of the Gates Foundation's plans to eradicate poliomyelitis in Asia and Africa as a basis for discussing the often limited historical role that vaccines have played in controlling many infectious diseases when compared to increases in living standards. A recent book on the Epidemic Intelligence Service of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, USA, is used to illustrate the importance of epidemiological surveillance and public health laboratories in past and present efforts to control infectious diseases. On the basis

Control and eradication strategies for brucella melitensis infection in sheep and goats.

AIM: To describe the various strategies for the control and eradication of B. melitensis infection in sheep and goats. METHODS: The advantages and drawbacks of these strategies are discussed on the basis of the author's personal experience and a revision of the relevant literature. RESULTS: Vaccination programmes in various combinations can be applied either to decrease the prevalence of infection in the animal population or, when combined with adequate complementary eradication measures, to achieve a brucellosis-free status. CONCLUSION: Controlling the disease should be the primary goal of

Eliminating latent tuberculosis.

Tuberculosis is recognized as the world's leading bacterial cause of death. Yet 95% of infection is believed to exist in an asymptomatic 'latent' form that is defined not by the identification of bacteria, but by the host immune response in the form of reactivity to tuberculosis proteins in the tuberculin skin test. It seems likely that clinically defined latent tuberculosis actually represents a spectrum that runs from elimination of live bacilli to subclinical disease: hence, it might be unhelpful to use a single term to describe all these conditions. To support this view, here we focus on r

[Pressing issues and future plans for immunization practice in Japan].

An outbreak of adult measles in 2007 in Japan revealed the poor immunization strategy that active implementation has not been conducted for fear of prosecution in vaccine adverse events. After 2000, many amendments in immunization law were promulgated but did not always provide a favorable circumstance for immunization schedule. Especially, the discontinuation of recommendation of Japanese encephalitis vaccine was decided soon after the occurrence of serious neurological adverse event and seemed a big fault for the prevention of illness in a long run. These are liable to cause misunderstanding

[Epidemic risks and their management in Łódź between 1945-1950].

The sanitary and anti-epidemic activities in Łódź between 1945-1950 were characterized by a determination to maintain the good health of the citizens. At that time Łódź just like other industrial conurbations, was in a very difficult economic, social and epidemiological situation. The multisector health care system, operative at the time, which was based on organizational structures from before 1939, effectively managed the risks of epidemics. In this difficult post-war period epidemics of endemic typhus, diphtheria and scarlet fever were successfully managed in Łódź, and the incidence of othe
